  • If your tractor has no spark at all, or weak spark, consider rebuilding the magneto. Rachel will walk you through the entire rebuild process in an easy to follow step-by-step format.
    The Fairbanks Morse FM-J magnetos are often found on Allis Chalmers B, C, CA, WC, WD and WD-45 models.

    Great video, great editing. I don't feel like a second was wasted!
    My brother restores old ACs. He tears them completely apart to paint, lubricate and check bearings. He buys new gaskets, seats, mufflers and puts in new wiring and gauges but I don't think he'll rebuild a mag. Thanks for this, great job!

    Great video! I would suggest that when the armature is out, if you are not super-sure that the magnets are strong, get them recharged. Never a better time. Weak magnets were the main problem I had with my recently-repaired FMJ on my B.

    Excellent job of pointing out the parts and reassembly. The only step that was missed, was when installing the Mag back on the tractor, is to make sure that the rotor is pointed at the pickup inside the rotor cap for which ever cylinder is at TDC of the Flywheel, other than that it was a great video and I haven't seen any videos this good on rebuilding from beginning to end. 👍 😊

    Great video for the FM rebuild. Make note, the F mark showing, does not tell you if the number one cylinder is on the compression stroke or the exhaust stroke and the F mark is not for static timing( use the C or TDC mark for static timing), but for using a light, while the engine is running.
    Maybe you cover this in another video for actual timing of the magneto?

    On an F163 and 162 you time the engine and mag to #4 cylinder. You did not mention timing the mag. I have a 2 cylinder Wisconsin on a 1947 Lincoln welder I lost my fire on it and the mag is similar with the gear on the cap. Thanks for the video.

    One way of testing a mag is put a finger on the coil and give it a spin with the other hand, you'll know if it works or not. My grandfather got me with that trick when I was young.

    Магнето весьма похоже на русские М-124, не полностью конечно, но характерная схожесть в решениях просматривается, любопытно было бы взять два разные и сравнить насколько они схожие.
    Интересно еще русские здесь были ? отмечаемся если да.

    Hi Rachel,
    Where does the larger black wire running opposite the condenser connect to? I have a FMX Magneto on a Ford 2N tractor and it does not have that wire. Also, even when my points are open there is continuity between them. Should the smaller coil wire, condenser wire and point spring all be connected on the insulating post? (I have new points, condenser and coil installed.)

    • @jaswmclark
      @jaswmclark 5 ปีที่แล้ว

      Probably a good idea to put the engine crank aligned with the timing mark before disassembly. I use a business card or the card from a cigarette package to set the points. Check thickness with a micrometer first. Card will not scratch the point surface and often feeler gauges may have a thin film of oil. Note: women were often used for fine work on engines in WW II. Queen Elizabeth as a teenage princess qualified as a "Driver/Mechanic" In the British Army.

    • @roygunter3244
      @roygunter3244 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I put one on a C, the timing mark is easily seen through a port on the rear of the engine. It is really easy to find the mark and you can also check to see if the impulse springs work so it isn't really critical to set the engine at TDC you can turn it until it is and then set the mag to where the points are just opening. The tractor I put the mag on had been messed with a bunch before I got to it. I am sure there is someone on here showing how to do it.
