I really love the beginning when the voice was explaining how PTSD is formed and it gets you with a jump scare twice. Not only was it funny how IGP screams both times as it explains it so calmly, it showcases the fear that comes with reoccurring triggers and how the fear of it happening again no matter how "irrational" can really put you on edge and start irritability, alertness, and paranoia.
I also really liked the "You forgot to close the door" segment because it really reminded me of how PTSD can represent itself in those subconscious voices that are constantly warning or reminding you of your triggers at random times and putting you on edge or in flashbacks for seemingly no reason. Making you paranoid of your surroundings to the point you develop behaviors that seem manic and irrational to outside eyes, to protect yourself from threats very real to you. Just like the way IGP started panicking when he didn't shut the door after that moment, it never mattered before or after that point, but he was definitely aware of it after.
The same goes for the timed segments. How the Second time it makes you panic because you're fearing the clock and running out of time with no clear instructions and then it just stops because the fear was all that was real in that moment. I absolutely love that the game is full of these little details that represent the psychology of it all so well. I don't have War PTSD or anything but Complex Trauma from near-lifelong abuse can represent in a lot of similar ways, it's fascinating that this game captured those feelings so well.

My dad was older when he and my mom had me- He was 57 when I was born while my mom was 36- They had a true fairytale love story for the ages, even though there wasn't a happy ending, with my dad passing away from lung and throat cancer when I was just 11. He was a Korean War vet, and as a child I often wondered why he NEVER spoke of his time there. When he died, I was given all of his belongings. He had earned a Purple Heart for saving his best friend's life by taking a bullet for him. Now that I am older, I completely understand why he never spoke of his time over there. He was the most gentle and loving man I have ever known. I can't imagine him taking someone's life, and yet he did. Many times, I am sure. I don't even want to think about what that did to him psychologically.

My grandpa was in the Korean War, he was drafted at 18 and was never the same. He lost a lot of things during the war, his hair was cut, that was his pride, the kids her grew up with, he had to watch them die, and the friends he made during those years. My grandfather was in the med bay, so he saw all of the injuries up close, and even ones who weren't fully dead receiving that last adrenaline rush. He got rid of his medals, he earned quite a few he said, but he never told my mom what happened to them. It was very traumatizing and he was never able to get out of that place really, so I sort of understand where you're coming from, the cancer as well, so I'm sorry for your loss.

adding to Winogronek's brilliant post, the appearance of an apartment building (or hotel) can usually be attributed to two concepts: Relevance, and False Confidence. | Relevance is simple, the person may have lived in temporary housing, or has very fond/terrible memories attributed to such places. | False confidence is more difficult to explain, but I will try my best. Temporary housing makes people feel like they are home, but not home all at the same time, this causes a foreign nature to surround temporary housing (this is also a factor in what makes a haunted hotel so creepy). Another issue is the feeling of being trapped financially or psychologically. This is evident by the bars on the windows, and the ability to move through the building, but not being able to escape.
    Psychology is wild isn't it!

"I'm always feeling tense - like I did something wrong. Really good game design."
I think mental health can be such a slippery slope in horror games but putting the experience of living with them rather than making it the villain the main point of the scares and the terror is a really effective way to get good scares and drive home some of those real emotions people feel.
And as someone who has PTSD I think this game did a really, really good job of making you feel dread and paranoia even if there's no understandable or tangible reason why outside of the things we know is being projected by the trauma. And that is just excellent.
Genuinely want to see more experiences with mental illnesses in games rather than making people who have them the bad guy.

Interesting take on PTSD, from a Iraq war veteran. Mine has made me emotionally numb, I literally feel little emotion, I usually fake it to make it, I also have depression and anxiety from my time in service. I'd say stuff like this is showing would be from extreme PTSD.
Also, windows with bars are pretty common in some cities, like in El Paso for example. I'd say his are due to hypervigilance, another issue many of us have. I have cameras all over my property and 3 guard dogs because I am always thinking someone is going to try and break in or something. I plan on putting bars on my bottom windows, and switching my doors to steel doors with fingerprint locks.. I never feel safe.
The VA doesn't do sht by the way. They claim I don't have PTSD at all. Mine usually causes extreme anger. Too many days I want to just go start a physical fight with someone for no reason. My PTSD game would be less about horror and more about anger etc.
Thought I'd give ya'll an idea about what one veteran's experience is like.

I've found it difficult to actually find clear data on this, so I'm not certain; but I've heard that a highly significant amount of PTSD through combat results less from "I'm a victim", "my friend got blown up" or "the enemy did this bad thing", but instead from actions that the individual takes part in, or the results of what the individuals allies have done. I'm saying this partly because it's inherently psychologically interesting, and partly because I think that this subject (specifically PTSD through combat) has been kind of deformed by US military fetishism, and the "idealised" image of a "victimised hero" that seems to be palatable. If you adore the armed forces no matter what, you'd like to imagine that all PTSD would result from bad things happening to the hero - it's much harder for us (the public) to consider our hero grappling with the possibility that one of the rounds he fired might have mortally wounded that man who then clearly spent many, many hours dying a painful death, completely alone. Or even worse, if, in a high-stress, violent experience, a blood-thirsty, malevolent part of his psyche makes itself known to him for the first time in his life. If you see people blown up, that's something separate from you - it may be awful, but it's not you. But what if you make a mistake and shoot a civilian? What if you find out that you have a true monster lurking in your own mind? That *is* you. You can't leave that at the door. You have to deal with that - and no fucking wonder that many people are uncapable of dealing with that. I truly believe that the average modern person is more capable of dealing with terrible things happening to them, than dealing with encountering their own "capacity for evil" and the associated moral burden

    • @ritabanbasak7062

Honestly I can’t imagine what it’s like to be in a war. To watch the friends you trained with get killed so easily and in terrible ways, to have to kill other people who are just fighting just like you and then to come back hopefully in one piece to people who couldn’t even begin to understand a fragment of what you went through. That’s why I fear a war happening while I’m young, not for the fear of dying but the fear of trauma. I have nothing but 100% percent of respect for anyone who fought in a war and I’m lucky I was born in a peaceful ish time.

The others would constantly rock back and forth and eventually developed wrinkles around their eyes, their faces sunken, and it's almost as if a piece of them gets torn off each time I see them... Each of them saw their own variation of Hell, my father recalls trying to drag a friend to cover after he was shot and then his ears began ringing and he realized he was only dragging an arm. Many people don't understand the horrors that people live with when they return from Hell. I appreciate this experience highlighting the despair that many face from war.

Id like to see a WW1 horror game that deals with the breaking psyche of your character as your sanity is tested again and again in the trenches and the horrors they bring. There wouldn’t ever be an actual “monster” but you wouldn’t know that. As the game would go on (which would be first person with an emphasis on character and narrative moreso than combat) shadows and shapes would twist, the sounds of war would shift to sound more alive and demonic, and you would often see the germans as beasts and monsters, and your allies as corpses you’ve seen in the past. Lotta psychological horror potential in WW1

I appreciate that games are being made to personify what mental illness does to some people. Especially PTSD. PTSD can happen to anyone not just veterans. Make sure to speak to someone if you ever feel too much stress. Never feel ashamed of talking to someone. Eliminate the stigma of mental illness and continue to talk about it.
I was mentally and physically abused; watched my mom try to commit suicide (saved her); watched my parents throw things at each other; and many more traumatic situations. However, my life is not the worse but trust me when I say, there are many programs and people out there that will help you. If you live in a situation like I did, seek help. I left my home at the beginning of Grade 12. I lived with my aunt until I graduated, then I went to university. You are never alone, always ask for help and remember your mental illness does not mean you are crazy, don't let anyone tell you differently.

Those statistics are strikingly low. I even looked up new statistics regarding PTSD and war veterans. It's even lower. I can't comprehend how anyone can be okay after seeing the horrors of war. Imo, it should be in the 90% range. The human brain isn't equipped to deal with repeated trauma, hence why mental health issues are so prevalent and getting worse.
This game also does a great job at portraying what untreated PTSD looks like. This is an excellent reminder that if you need help, get help. No one deserves to suffer. Anyone who's ever experienced abuse can relate to the yelling, blaming, shaming, and fear.
Even though this is a game, I was oddly hoping that Krieger would get help. Poor guy.

Statistics might be low cause not everyone dealing with it gets help. A lot keep it to themselves. And then use bad coping methods like drugs and alcohol

    • @MidnightSonnet
      @MidnightSonnet 3 ปีที่แล้ว

@@FriendsDontLie that's kinda what I'm figuring, too. The stigma against therapy, especially amongst men, is what keeps people from seeking the help they desperately need. My fiance sought help (finally) and learned a lot. People need to realize that the pros outweigh the cons.

I can't speak for PTSD, but as someone who is now medicated for crippling General Anxiety Disorder this game his *really* close to home.
The first lot of meds I went on gave me some wicked side effects, and the idea that I had to either live with these side effects or go back into that place broke me. For the first time in my life I wasn't afraid of closing my eyes, or turning my back, or looking into mirrors etc. I didn't know a world without fear existed, and suddenly having to chose between that, and being a zombified shadow of my former self, was world shattering. Thankfully I'm now on meds that don't really give me any noticeable side effects and I'm doing okay; but this game is honestly about as analogous as you could get. I can honestly say I'm only alive today because I didn't want to upset my parents, and that my Mum pushed me to get a different prescription that worked.
