It may be a prudent idea, Jay, to have some window protection built into your new home. Something like shutters or even some kind of anchors with which to firmly attach plywood sheeting when the need arises. Keeping a number of correct-sized plywood sheets in storage would be a good investment against potential damage and also for peace of mind. Maybe all windows wouldn't need covering; you do need to see what's out there, I guess. But taking some precaution by covering some windows--maybe larger ones--would be well worth the investment, I'd think.

Mostly, their path is towards the northern Philippines such that if you go to the Batanes islands, people have wisened up and constructed hiuses made of stones and very tight grass/nipa roofs. And every year those islands are pounded by typhoons, super or not, but the people living there are more aware, always ready for any kind of storms.
Here in Winnipeg Canada, the second half of May was the hottest thing we experienced for spring. During the day it was up to 30 deg and night time can get low to 16deg but at least its not humid. I'm pretty sure we broke the record for the hottest spring in May. The only thing that scare's me is golf sized hail if we continue this 30deg weather through July- Aug.
We were hit by typhoon washi or sendong last Dec 16 2011 in Cdo (first time in CDO to have that storm since 1970). We were flooded. We lived close to a river but the dam up ahead broke.
Storm center is 1,250km NW and moving to the NNW. Not even what could be described as a glancing blow for Siargao Island. Resume BAU and pray for those who may be impacted.

ST Betty (Mawar) is moving north-northwest, but seems to be lingering over extreme northern Luzon, so what ever winds and rains we will experience even here in the NCR will be more of the southwest monsoon weather conditions and soon, the rainy season will officially be declared by PAGASA. We are fortunate here in the PH that Mawar, now ST Betty has weakened and will not make landfall. Winds have made afternoons much cooler, even if the humidity is still high. Thank God, ST Betty spared us all. I hope everyone is safe and dry in Siargao.

Growing up on the mid Atlantic coast of America this is a normal seasonal concern. Everyone tracks the storms and prepares ahead with groceries. Many close to the ocean have sand bags and board up their windows. The most vulnerable locations must build their house a certain elevation above ground. It's just a part of life when you live near the ocean. There have been some horrific storms tearing down gigantic homes, turning them into a heap of sticks. The tropics is not the only place that has to deal with dangerous weather events. I prefer not to deal with it and live further inland now.
If you live in a concrete house boarding up windows during typhoon is the best way to stay dry ....we learned our lessons long time ago so if a typhoon (strong or not) is hitting our place w/c is very often(Bicol region) we board up windows and sliding doors . It protects glass from flying debris and strong winds , so no filming😂 until the typhoon passed .
Sending my prayers to you and your family to all there in the P.I I am very concerned of the surge even though it is not directly hitting you but you will get the outskirts of that storm.. please be safe..

Each & every year the news media always use the term "the STRONGEST storm this season". They love to sensationalise - it sells. Just be prepared and be safe.

I always watch your blogs every day no fail I’m one of your subscribers born in Davao, now living down under.. just learned that a cone shaped roofing in more typhoon resistant, the reason why houses up far north of the Philippines are built with cone shaped roofing because that place is always visited by strong typhoons take care.. soon I’ll be going back to Philippines for good.. the place to be.. a happy place still
We use to it, it's like normal for us. When we have storm here in Ottawa Canada, I'm not scared because I experienced all the calamity disaster back in the Philippines.
No need to worry I live in Siargao and no real weather distribution just a few more waves than usual at the beach outside our house. So the storm did not come to Siargao.
The most important thing to learn is the route of typhoon, thats the 1st thing i search everytime they announce a typhoon is entering PAR(Philippine Area of Responsibility)
