Are these forms designed so that the person doing them will stay in a small-ish area? Or, does the person choose when to turn around so they will not run into a wall?

They are taught in a specific pattern. The old reference is you need "as much room as it takes for an ox to lay down." Although, you should be present enough to not run into a wall, or, for that matter, an ox! :)

I have not gone into this yet in any detail. I have classes available through patreon and private lessons but this specifically is not something that I have taught yet. There are classes building towards that. But for now it is mostly covering basic TaiJi and Phase theory as well as a bunch of classes on specific forms and qigong sets.
