  • About six months ago I created an ecosystem in a jar using water I collected from a ditch in the forest. This ecosphere in an enclosed jar has been sitting on a shelf for half a year, is it still alive?

    3:54 This ecosphere is not dead, there are billions of living microorganisms there, it has reached euqualbrium

    I love the idea of having your own self-sustaining ecosystem at home 😊

    It looks like “the world’s oldest terrarium” possibly has a cork lid. Which technically wouldn’t make it sealed. Like your jars that are completely sealed with glass lids. The air exchange that a cork lid provides would drastically change the results.

    I really need to make this. Also, can you keep a small animal such as a small fish in it and make a little airtight closable tube to add food for the fish and allow the fish to live while doing this?

      DO NOT PUT FISH IN IT. FISH NEED PLACE TO SWIM, AND THE WILDLIFE IN IT MAY KILL IT

    So this can never be opened or air introduced. Correct?

      It can be, but the concept is to keep it closed forever and let mother nature form her own balanced ecosystem within the jar.

    Do you top off and compensate for evaporation?

    • @DannysAquariums
      @DannysAquariums  ปีที่แล้ว +4

      There’s no evaporation, it’s sealed. The evaporation that occurs within the jar stays within and automatically compensates. 🙂
      There’s no human interference to the experiment.
