This episode is a very 'dark comedy". The alien is appropriately macabre and cynical. But he utters the immortal line "Everybody COme DRINK GLUG MAKE SLEEMOFF" LOL. Even Deek Smeek and Isralun enjoy drinking Glug and making Sleemoff!!
Frozen at 30 seconds in .... Smith leans in to those two trees behind him like they are antlers for his head , or horns, that only fit when his greed for power and wealth urged him to wear that crown😂 i watched that he didn't lean into them until he placed the crown on his head (other people's property he warned Will about touching with the hem's-egg-sized rubys 🤣)
As I said on a another review, I only ever watched the B&W episodes once before network tv in Australia removed them from re-runs once Colour TV started in 1975. I only remember 3 episodes. The Fifth Dimension, the Mirror episode ..... and this one. As a child this episode disturbed me greatly in 2 ways. 1)The way the androids (not that I knew what an android was, I thought they were just super-humanoids) walked through the Force Field frightened me. So much power! 2) The final 'twist' where the real Dr Smith did in fact stay with the Robinsons. I did not pick up on this! I really thought the real Dr Smith had gone with the aliens!!!! I knew as years rolled on and would watch repeats of the colour episodes that I must have somehow not picked up on this, but it took until the 1990's when they finally showed a B&W episode that I realised what happened. Having said that, it is still not entirely certain the real Dr Smith was with them.
I think you said it yourself in another comment: he likes Dr. Smith. Why is incomprehensible, but at various points in the series he said he likes Smith and feels like someone needs to babysit him (in more diplomatic terms, of course). In the first season we see that developing, and then when Smith becomes more of a clown than a menace Will really gets attached to him.
Now, the Robot can detect irregularities sufficiently subtle to put a block on the Andronican (I see what they did with the name there!) signals but could not discern an android Dr. Smith compared to the real one right in front of them? Hmmm....
My guess would be that the other Androids were created from “nothing”, being basically “nothings”. But the Smith clone had some traces of the real Smith, making him different from the other androids.
