Along with Ghost in the Shell, Akira, and a few others, it’s one of the biggest contributors to the boom of anime in the West in the 90s. It might be forgotten in Japan, but it’s status in the West is borderline legendary.
@@nathanclark2424 I know this is a year late, but yeah, Fist of the North Star is considered a classic from what I've read and what I've been told by people native to Japan.
14:40 You failed to mention that the sulphuric acid she has was probably heated. Now if I can remember correctly (and anyone can correct me if I’m wrong) since heated sulfuric acid acts as an oxidizer and alcohol is combustible, mixing the two could cause a reaction like an explosion or even start a fire. So actually, the reaction caused was plausible.....YOU don’t fuck with chemistry.
To be fair to Kyoya at the beginning, Rai specifically stated that he had predicted that he wouldn't be able to beat Revi Ra, so his reaction was justified. I mean, if some old spirit fart showed up to me and said "you need to fight this dude who is going to bring Hell on earth and save the world, but you're going to lose" then I'd tell him to scram too. What's the point in fighting to save the world when you're flat out told you're not going to succeed?
I actually consider this anime in my top 10 alongside Akira, the original Vampire Hunter D, and a couple Ghibli films. Yeah... I actually love this and I really don't care what anyone says. The theme, tone, and atmosphere are great but I'm willing to admit that nostalgia probably has a lot to do with it seeing that this is one of the first anime I've seen 20 years ago when I got into it. Demon City Shinjuku will always hold a special place in my heart.
I still cannot believe that there is a Demon City Shinjuku tabletop rpg game. I was looking over the old rack of rpg books at my local comics store and saw it and was like no way seriously.
Call me a late guy for watching these old reviews, but I enjoy these as much as Nostalgia Critic's vids. The first time I watched this anime in particular was back when SciFi channel had the Saturday Anime. Ya know, the one segment that was way early in the morning? I saw this, Aria: Zeiram the Animation & Project A-ko thanks to that segment. Back then, this was cool to me, and yes the scene with the dead girl made me crack too. It had a few goofy moments, but it was good for a guy who was getting into anime, and seeing something besides Toonami animes).
I saw it on The Action Channel's Animidnight block. I'd stay over at my friend's house since they had sattelite and we'd stay up late to watch the movies. This one had us in stitches thanks to the dub.
17:49 Why is this scene such a surprise to Sage? The father threw the sword at the bad guy, only to lose the fight in the end. When his son fell down that same pit, it was obviously going to fall into his hands if he survived!
I was surprised at how sad I was at the end of Serial Experiments Lain. I didn't even completely understand what I had watched and I was just balling. Now I call it one of my favorite anime.
Not sure who else has the free anime channel on their smart TV but they *CONSTANTLY* air this movie nonstop on the channel, I think it's called CrushTV? I was watching different movie on it but when it came back from commercials THIS MOVIE PLAYED INSTEAD AGAIN
5:20 I wonder if this character had a Kansai accent in the original Japanese because then it would make total sense to dub it with a Southern accent, seeing as Kansai accents are seen as "hick". Just wish it wasn't completely over the fucking top.
I know this movie isn't anything special, but as one of the first anime films I ever watched, I do harbor a special fondness for it. It's campy and kind of stupid at times, but fun and exciting. Also I like that the main "hero" isn't the cliche selfless archetype for once; he's a selfish prick who has to be coaxed into doing the right thing. Of course that could just be because I think anti-heroes make for more interesting characters.
4:46 As someone what read the book, the reason there's a spaceship is because it's the distant future of 2030, people can go to different planets to study. Kyoya wanted to go to Mars because he hoped that he didn't get a sorcerer's curse if he lived there. It's in the book.
Just because an area is cut off, doesn't mean money become useless to them. It's like jail, money's still worth stuff, because you can get shit smuggled in. The yen is worth stuff outside the demon slums, no doubt, some people will have picked up smuggling. Ripe business for them.
Mephisto isn't a bad guy at all indeed. Except when he tortures Shalla-Bal to torment Silver Surfer or turns Peter Parker into an irresponsible manchild.
Reviewing this guy's movies without noting the fluidity of the animation, the brilliant art, etc is so puzzling. These are among the most "anime" animes. Theyre stylized in a way that is particular to animation, and to the hilt
Its a classic film that shows a major difference between anime decades. try getting it produced now. Something more interesting is that is is based of a multiple part manga series that more explores the world and different arcs. For example in Shinjiku you have mutants, demons, ghosts, cyborgs, superweapons, psychics and really whatever you want for each series.
Agreed, no way could an anime like this be made today with everything seems to be so trope heavy. I'm really fascinated by this. I had no idea how wild Shinjuku was and how limited the anime showed it all. Perhaps it was for the best because this anime is good despite what Sage says, it does what it needs to.
Ah yes, I own this movie. Occasionally my friends and I throw it on to have something to laugh at. I was always amused by how papa smurf said the word father. Fantastic.
I first saw this episode when it came out and then like a month later, I found the Demon City Shinjuku Role playing game and resource book. Basically the players handbook for the Demon city's tabletop RPG game. I had to buy it, probably never to play it but just to say that I own it.
Hm.. I liked demon city.. And Wicked City... and Ninja scroll.. After seeing this, still like it, never noticed (or took notice) on the points you made here, are apt..
Michael Stethem lmao except for bob sessions as Rebi Rah the rest of the dubbing is pretty god awful. The spider demon’s one line in Japanese sounds a billion times better than the dub.
I think it was done by Manga UK, which means it's mostly British people attempting to sound not British. Happened in Cyber City Oedo 808 and Goku Midnight Eye.
3:36 Well if we're all being honest 'Zack' didn't need to do anything to make hell on earth everyone else was doing that already. He probably felt redundant and got depressed at being unable to make the world worse.
I watched Demon City Shinjuku ages ago and I liked it...I saw the sub version, which has less "colorful" language and weird accents. I think you're over analyzing some things: it's a movie about demons in the "real" world, depiction of proper chemical reactions is the least of its problems if you're looking for veracity. It's a simple story, and it's entertaining if you don't overthink it. To some degree I like this movie better than both Wicked City and Ninja Scroll because the female lead doesn't get raped.
Oh man this Anime. One of the first I ever seen and Its still one of my Favorite. Random Accents, "Go fuck yourself" Space shuttle, Presidents daughter having English accent. Well at least the monster are cool and I liked Mephisto. I own this anime and I like it for its cheesyness

Japanese guy here. Ninja Scroll is pretty much forgotten in Japan. It's really interesting how it's highly regarded in the west.
Out of curiosity, what anime are considered classics in Japan as well as America? Is Fist Of The North Star one of them?
I imagine you guys see films like that often. It's very rare to see something similar ptoduced like it in the west.

That introduction for The President sounds like the introduction of the Antichrist in a turn of the Millennium End Times Christian movie.
It is very common for Anime and Manga creators to recycle their designs.
