2017 played host to one of the most competitive Kailua Men's Night Doubles tournaments in recent times! When you see multi-time Night Doubles champions Mikael Maatta & Jan Tribler seeded only as #4 in the main draw, you know the field of final teams will be very competitive! In fact, the final 3 matches of the main event all went the distance (3 full sets) & provided some highly dramatic & entertaining tennis.
Like I mentioned earlier, the doubles pairing of Maatta & Tribler entered the 2017 Kailua Night Doubles as the #4 seed, only b/c other teams had been making their name known by winning the previous two Night Doubles events in the Men's Triple Crown that year. Both veterans & young fresh blood were knocking at the door but Mikael & Jan still posed a constant obstacle for all challengers to battle en route to the championship victory. In the 47th annual Kailua Night Doubles, they would be there again, making it all the way to the semi finals & looking poised to make another title match birth. This time around, a fresh new team with youth, passion, & competitive fire would stand on the other side of the net: Marcel Chan Jr. & Corey Pang. Fresh out of the division 1 college tennis world, Marcel & Corey carried momentum of both collegiate training & match experience into the Night Doubles arena. Marcel, who had been a Kailua Racquet Club member since his young days as a junior player, had been dying for an opportunity like this to perhaps win his hometown (& home club) tournament! His partner, Corey Pang, had just finished his senior year playing for the University of Cal Poly. Corey boasted maybe the biggest serve of the tournament that year as well as raw tenacity that would make him a threat against any opponent.
This evening would prove to be one of the most competitive semi final nights in Kailua Night Doubles history with both this match & the ensuing semi final match going the distance. This matchup however had the feeling of a final round to it as both Maatta/Tribler & Chan/Pang swapping leads throughout the contest. Man, we were lucky fans to witness this classic night!

This is some impressive high level doubles play footage. Rare on TH-cam to see full match videos at this level. Very much enjoyed it! I’m surprised at Head T shirt player that he didn’t have a 2nd serve and went mostly for 2 first serves. His return of serve inside out on deuce side is also unreal.

Thanks man! The older guys in white have both played D2 college tennis before as well as some ITF & even got wildcards into a challenger event before. They are savy!

Electrifying match for sure! What a comeback from Maatta & Tribler.
I think when Chan and Pang lost the 2nd set, they got a bit shocked in their mentality. In the 3rd set, when the score was 5:5 and Chan/Pang serving, they played too tight in critical points which costed that service game. I would say that broken service game was the decider for the match because Chan/Pang basically surrendered in the last game.

Nice analysis! This match was a highlight of the tournament that year due to the drama w/ the lead exchanges as well as the experience contrast. Just goes to show that the points at the critical parts of a match can make or break everything in the end. Very memorable battle!

The young guns are not that great in playing doubles. Great power but not too crafty for doubles match and lack of speed and agility for their age
