2016 saw a very interesting year for the Kailua Men's Night Doubles. That was because the main draw saw a few upsets early on that surprised the fans & players participating in the event. Normally, the top 4 seeds meet each other in the semi finals, proving that the chalk talks. That particular year, 2 - 3 seeded teams went down to newcomers wanting to crash the party!
On one side of the draw, the the old guard continued to reign as multiple champions Dennis Lajola & Ikaika Jobe snuck past the former two time champions Mikael Maatta & Jan Axel Tribler to make their 5th appearance in the Kailua Night Doubles final round. The opposite side of the draw played host to a new team that would emerge to challenge for the crown.
That match hosted 5th seeded Henry Gordon & Kawika Lam against 8th seeded Joel Kusnierz & Andrea Zannoni. Kawika, the local boy of the bunch, was a standout junior player for Hawaii, capturing 4 HHSAA varsity tennis championships at Punahou (1 in singles & 3 in doubles). He went on to play for the University of Washington, where he gained valuable experience at the D1 college tennis level. His partner Henry Gordon hailed from Texas, where he also played college tennis for Texas A&M (another D1 tennis school). Henry had previously trained as a junior at the John Newcombe Tennis Academy & even placed as high as 3rd in the infamous Kalamazoo junior tournament where the best of the juniors in the US compete every year. Their opponents Andrea Zannoni & Joel Kusnierz were also veterans of the college tennis scene. Both Joel & Andrea played as teammates at Saint Mary's University, where they contended for the West Coast Conference Championship. In 2008, the Gaels fell just short in a conference title duel match, losing to Pepperdine University. Playing a Night Doubles together would mean that much more to Andrea & Joel if they could do it together & relive some of their college tennis days together.

The two Haoles together too tough
Tennis is supposed to be a fun and healthy sport. However, I have become quite addicted to watching Tennis Ninja. I am now spending so much time watching and re-watching matches that my wife is threatening to leave me, the dog growls like it no longer knows who I am and I have descended into the fantasy that I could actually compete with these athletes. Shame on you!
