Gday Geoff Great series mate and getting a cracking job out of the kit and Humbrol products, been looking at a few reference books myself and have found that early war 109E aircraft had a very good semigloss paint made from good quality German paint and it wasn't until later on in the war that paint was of very poor quality Keep up the fantastic work mate
In my humble opinion I suspect that level of grime and smoke damage seen in the book probably occurred when the aircraft was originally shot down. The oil cooler sits directly beneath the engine. The first point where any smoke and escaping engine oil could escape the engine bay was through the lower engine cowling exactly where this appears to be. This is probably a historically accurate rendition on the model too as this was also forced down in a similar manner (Wk Nr 1480).

I love humbrol paints there really smooth and are fantastic sadly I don't live in England so I can't get daily access to the paints 😢
