"The most emotional Volkswagen there are". ... i like that. I drive the 2013 VW Scirocco R. There is something about the Scirocco and i love that. I am from South Africa - and whenever i see another Scirocco R on the road we always flash headlights or wave to each other in a respective manner. It is as if we belong to an "unspoken cool club" It might sound lame but we all know we drive an excellent unique car that will always capture attention. Excellent review..thank you!

BNRK21 I have 1.4L TSI with DSG. And I must say I kinda hate the car, as I bought it second hand. BUT when I put the foot down, I LOVE it. In normal mode, gear change is followed by exhaust burp, which I love, and that supercharger whine at 2.5k RPM is mesmerising. And you can hear blow off valve as well from time to time, when you let off the gas. Why I hate it? Interior panel are rattling, suspension is rattly as well, and VW Center is telling me they don't see nothing wrong with it. Traction control is just a light on a dash, it doesn't do crap when I pull away from standstill. In wet I always wheel spin even when I pull away like a grandpa. So I always look like some boy racer :D Also the gear change is erratic in normal mode, if I floor it, it will go up to red line, stays there till I feel that I loose power, and then shifts. Some times it shifts couple of gear at proper moment, but most of the time, I look like granny who doesn't know how to shift. Sport mode is again, shifting when I hit rev limiter (but down shifts and lightning fast revs are awesome). I feel if gear change was remapped to shift at around 5k, the car would be really fast, smooth and more enjoyable. But maybe it is just my car. Probably will have to look at ECU remap or something. But hey, as I said that tiny 1.4 L supercharged engine is a frikkin rocket and makes me forget everything wrong with that car. And yes, when you see another scirocco, it feels like seeing another gang member :D
It's just sad that VW does not make the Scirocco their sportiest hatchback. It looks so much more dynamic compared to the Golf. They also should incorporate the 4motion all wheel drive system into the Scirocco.

One of the best video reviews I have seen on the Scirocco.R.I am trying to decide whether I should get the Scirocco R or the Golf R.I don't really need a 5 door hatch.In Australia
the Golf R sells for a few thousand dollars more than the Scirocco R.I may do some spirited driving at the most so the Scirocco should be enough however,the Golf R would definitely have more grip.

Hi, in my opinion you should drive both cars and compare feelings. Always it going to depend of your style driving and your pleasures.
Reading your comment there I think the scirocco r is the obvious choice! Much more unique, and if you don't need the golfs practicality the roc beats it in every other department

I'm not jealous about too many things about Europe, but the hot hatch segment of cars is undoubtedly one thing I am jealous about.....sell them in the USA!!!! The Scirocco looks so much better than the Golf.

Expensive small cars don't sell enough in the US to make them worth it I think.

The best sports car that Volkswagen has. Certainly the car that I want. But with dsg and the expensive seats for the perfect look. I hope volkswagen continue the series of golf and scirocco. It definitely has a nice disgn and a nice facelift given. The sound of the exhaust sound great

glenn jegers Thanks! DSG clearly rocks, the best transmission on the market right now. The Golf will be sold until Volkswagen corp doesnt exist anymore ;-) About the Scirocco, people thought it might be diminished as the sales figures arent that good, but obviously they invested in the Facelift and want to keep the car as an image booster.

I love the Scirocco, have the 2.0 TSI '08 model and would prefer it over any Golf model since I love the sportier and kind of a GranTurismo feeling it gives you driving it...plus I love the fact that there aren't many on the road: really makes the car still stand out after 7 years and love the 'exclusivity' stamp that goes with it for that reason.
kpudgar Agree, with the Scirocco you really have the chance to get something exclusive but without a very high price. Still a wonder why not so many of them are on the road!
Owned one now for 18 months and it's a monster. Overall a lovely car that shifts like lightning. 3 things that mark it down in my opinion.
1. As many have already said, it needs 4WD/AWD. 280hp is too much for the front wheels alone. Spins at quite low revs in 1st gear, T/C cuts in and makes the whole experience very jolty or if you turn off the T/C your tyres will be gone in months.
2. It needs an extra gear. The 6 Speed box is not enough for cruising speeds, it needs 7 speeds. In the UK the motorway speed limit is 70 MPH, at this speed in 6th gear the engine is running at 3,000rpm. Far too high.
3. Although it is effectively the top of the range car, cruise control is an optional extra. It should be standard. It is not an all out sports car so little compromises to make everyday driving a bit more comfortable would be appreciated. If it was an all out sports car it would have AWD, more power and remove the back seats. It seems to be aimed somewhere between but misses a few of the things that would make it perfect.

Every review ive seen about this car, they all say its very good and fun to drive so it makes me wonder why they stopped making it ? To me, it looks so much better then the golf (I hate the golf shape) and its a shame they stopped making it and wasn't very popular.

Great review video! I'm so tempted to purchase this new 2014 model. But I do mostly urban work commute / town driving and really don't need a fast sporty car. But it looks amazing. Maybe a lower engine lol...... And people commenting about the accent. I think it's great.... Adds difference to the usual routine reviews your here... Makes you listen more. Great English btw!

Yeah, as I'm not a little boy racer and whilst I like to drivel freely away winding country A roads, and occasional short motorway trip oaf 30-40mils. I do mostly stop/start town driving.... So I might opt for the 1.4 Petrol. Suits my needs much better. Test drove it the other day and was surpassed how quite it was! It will be my first petrol car. I've always owned/drove diesels.... Now the biggest decision. Colour and trim. I've loving the Flash Red GT model :)

***** Volkswagen's policies with its models and trim levels here in the States is baffling to me. For example, in order to get the beautiful plaid cloth seats in the new GTI we have to buy the base "S" trim. But, if you get that, you can't get the sunroof or navigation. Not even as an option. If you really want the navigation you have to get the top Autobahn trim level. But we can't get that in a 3-door. It's very frustrating. At least we'll be able to get the Golf R with a manual next summer. It's coming here with the DSG transmission first.
Considering that the USA was responsible for VW's huge expansion and success because of the millions of Beetles we bought in the 1960's and 70's, I would think they'd be more considerate of us.
Jeff Puha Indeed the lacking success on the US market is an aspect VW CEO Winterkorn wants address personally now. It is utterly needed because I also think that they had the wrong strategy. E.g. why not offer the Passat as wagon but only the smaller Jetta no American wants to buy as wagon because its too small? Or why offering the Touareg offroad package on the European but not on the US market where more people drive offroad? We can only hope that they really changed their model policy for the US now.
***** I totally agree with you and I hope VW does modify it's marketing strategy here. I'm certain many American's would be eager to buy the Passat wagon. It's the right size and the right price. We don't have much of a choice when it comes to quality, affordable wagons. A lot of people want the utility of a handsome wagon, rather than an SUV.
I think the Touareg is an attractive vehicle in many ways, but our inability to get the off-road package diminishes it's desirability.
I'm disabled and can no longer drive, but if I could, I would definitely buy the new GTI with the Performance Package and a manual gearbox. But I would like the sunroof and navigation to be offered on the 3-door lower trim models, at least as an option. And the plaid cloth seats should be available on all of the trim levels. However, if the Scirocco R was available here, I would seriously consider getting that instead.
VW makes some fine cars. Hopefully they come to realize that many of us here in the States want their best models too.
By the way, do you happen to know what the width of the 19" Scirocco R tires is? Are they 235's or 245's? I can't find that information. Thanks.
Jeff Puha 235/35/19 or 235/40/18 depending on the rim size respectively.
Looks fantastic from some angles and love the R version, but the interior is a bit dated and the whole thing can be doing with sharpening up the exterior. I would have one tomorrow, but they have to make it more exciting to look at the front. Just like the GOLF MK7 - its a bit bland in the standard trim. I do love the R version though!
Just sad that they don't add the AWD with the R moniker.
Nice review, It might be useful to include the price of any extras in your reviews I.e they extra cost of the DSG gearbox.

Almost done restoring my '87. Please import this to the USA so I can have another.
For an everyday car I would choose the manual. For a second car that is sporty and used for fun I would go with the DSG.
I was very keen on a megane trophy,but when you compare the interior of the scirroco,it's quality is in another league.no contest.

They need to offer it with 4Motion as an option on the R vesion and the powerful diesel version like the Golf R and and then it might actually sell, otherwise we'll keep buying the 3 door Golf instead, which is just as good and cheaper !!!
It also need front and rear parking sensors as standard too !!!

I wanted to get one and I was like "yeah, it's a coupe", let's be honest, it's not a coupe, it's a sportier hatchback, but still a hatchback
It's only selling 200 a month in Germany.
In the Netherlands it was selling close to nothing. Thats the reason why it isn't available anymore in on the Dutch market. A shame, because its a nice car.
TheJPWest Most certainly. Sales wise, it does not make so much sense for Volkswagen to produce it imho, but it is rather an image factor. Still, it is one of the cheapest way to drive a high quality compact sports car!
I agree, I really like it too. Unfortunately in The Netherlands it's (the car) really expensive due to al kinds of taxes. The R version starts from 44 k.

volkswagon usa needs a sleek sporty two door coupe and they have none here in their line up, making it somewhat boring here in the usa, like acura (aside from the nsx) with its 4 door sedans and suvs

Nice review, interesting that you say VW want to keep it front wheel drive only. I think that's for two reasons, 1. Cost, this would become a very expensive car once that's fitted. 2. If they did make it 4wd, how many golf R would they sell? Not many is my guess. I have a Scirocco R, it's a great car and would stick to the manual gearbox.
Rich ard Indeed, it's all about positioning so that every product keeps a certain unique selling point. AWD for the Golf R. And indeed the Scirocco can be way cheaper in the most markets.

We have talked to VW and suggested to forward the feedback. Do people import German cars and fit them to US regulations in general? Is that happening?
Yes people do that regularly...especially where I live in Southern California. Scirocco has a big fan base here and I like the Golf gti but its not the same.

Tell VW that the only reason i am not buying it is that it does not have AWD! And there may be many like myself out there. It is allready a different car from a Golf, (looks) no need to differentiate by keeping it FWD . Seat Cupra has a AWD nowadays!
i used to love R's when their prices were ok.. now in most countries you can buy a premium kinda same powered car with the same price.. and that recent overpriced part is coming from only marketing thats why its bad.. most of the important parts are not even unique to R's already.. please dont tell me bumpers are different etc.. if VW lowers the R prices a bit to pull its normal level Golf R and Scirocco R will deserve their deserved selling numbers and then they can be real more car for less money.. changing the needle color, when you start to car R badge on screen etc. shouldnt make the difference.. or the fake sporty sound comes from soundaktor on GTI's and R's.. iit should be less money for more car.. that R's need..
and about the video thank you for uploading first of all.. but from the beginning to the end a review for sports car actually recent VW's most sporty there is only 10 seconds of full throttle in the whole almost 14 mins vid which i waited patiently for.. video states fuel consumption for a sports car but no performance details, no mechanical sport details etc.. its not a 1.2TSI engine already really no need to make it this boring.. and PS.. 9L on highway with an R.. its so easy to see better eco numbers with R's if the video concerns about it more.. ;))

***** im driving VW group cars since 2008 i like VW.. when we take the germany prices Scirocco R is 52K Euro..and a premium brand BMW's 428 (2L turbo, 245hp) is 43K Euro.. even 435i (306hp) is the same price with Scirocco R.. normal Scirocco can be cheap donno its price but this vid is about 2015 Scirocco R.. thank you.

Ich habe seit 2 Wochen den R als 2. wagen und ich muss sagen was VW hier entwickelt hat ist wirklich Motorsport pur. Ich habe lang überlegt, 2L Turbo, frontantrieb, kaum andere R's auf der Straße zu sehen, kann der gut sein? Ja wirklich ein ganz besonderes Coupé. Schon der Einstieg ins Auto, lässt mich jedes Mal grinsen. Aber was mich noch mehr begeistert ist die soundkulisse im inneren. Ich lehne mich jetzt sehr weit aus dem Fenster, aber es kommt schon leichter 6 Zylinder Flair auf, ich frage mich wie das aus 4 Zylindern machbar ist. Die Leistung ist brachial, Lustig das sich selbst einige Porsche Fahrer irgendwann eingestehen das sie rechts rüber müssen. Zusätzlich ein Grinsen im Gesicht....und für alle Erbsenzähler die Tippfehler sind für euch. 😉

I have this car. Get a golf r is my advice!!! Front wheel spin in my rocco r sucks :( golf r is faster cheaper four wheel drive better model. Plus exhaust amplifier. Its a no brainer
+rob squires I had to double check your "cheaper" claim but I found you're absolutely right, the Golf R really is! I have a standard, mildly remapped 2.0 Scirocco and I think it's a great looking car but I'd take a Golf R over it or a Rocco R in a heartbeat.

...and so in 2018 VW decided to discontinue the Scirocco. It must have been to much of an internal competition for an "ordinary" and certainly boringly looking Golf. What a shame.
My *OLD* Golf 5 R32 beat this new car by miles.. sound better, drives better, looks better, and this new car look like my golf from 07 interior vise. waste of money :/
Astra opc would destroy this . In every angle .
If by angle you mean looks you must be blind, this is easily the best looking coupe hatch you can buy. As for speed the roc does 0-100km half a second faster and the turbocharger is way more efficient, also the roc is lighter so I see no way a Vauxhall would ever touch this, never mind destroy it lolol
+Calum Beats your so correct on that one the astra vxr or opc would not destroy this its a heavy car engine isnt as quick reving as the old one the scirocco r uses the EA113 engine used in the older audi s3s with the k04 engine is more reliable then the EA888 platform which have had lots of faults the only thing the scirocco r lacks compaired to the astra opc is brembo brakes and a limited slip diff rather have a vw over a vauxhall anyday

I had one calum I had the corsa vxr yes it was a weapon was remaped and such engine forged but was unreliable stuff breaking all the time so I got rid and ive ordered a rocco R just waiting for it to be be built lol
