- This week I went stealth camping in Bristol for the first time to give the ford transit campervan a run at UK van life. 🚐
We parked up in my off grid camper at the Jubilee Inn for a night in the tiny home on wheels.
Unfortunately the pub was closed due to a gas problem but the owner was kind enough to let us use the car park anyway.

I'm a campervan person myself and use the same apps as others on here. It's actually considered bad form not to at least use the pub for at least a couple of drinks or a meal unless of course lockdown rules are preventing the pub from opening to the public. If that was the case, a fiver in an envelope with a thank you note would be a nice touch. I have pre printed cash envelopes for this very purpose. Enjoy your travels and stay safe...
Hey Nobby, thanks for the comment. The pub was actually closed due to a gas issue, but the owner was kind enough to let us stay anyway and refused to take any money from us. Guess there are some good people still left in the world! Hopefully the publicity from this vlog will get him a few visits in the future post lockdown, as we'll certainly be visiting again next time we're down that way.

Don't forget to buy a kettle. Yes parking under trees isn't great in the rain or autumn when leaves falling off and they can make a racket landing on the roof x

Great pull-out bed set-up... I'd consider a pin in the bottom of sliding bed frame to drop into a drilled hole in the fixed blocks to hold it steady (while you toss and turn in your sleep) just a thought...
We did think of something like that to lock it into place when renovating but never got around to it. We'll see how it goes but yes a great thought!

On another note the bed supports would be better with a single top pin into a short hole in the underside of the bed, less likely to slip under any sort of ‘stress’ - know what I mean!

Thanks Anthony! Yes, been thinking of a thicker blanket, or even heated blanket or a little heater. However I think that'll be it now for camping in winter so we'll see how we go in summer!

Peanut butter is so tasty! Here in the US,it's a staple for many people. Have you tried almond butter? One of my favorites. Safe travels!
Haha one of my earliest memories was picking up a 'peanut butter jelly' sandwich as a kid visiting Florida! No still haven't tried almond butter!
Well done guys. Pity you can't stealth camp in a Tesco car park, it would be just perfect for you two. Top tip there about using the same water to wash your faces for washing the dishes. Will have to watch the vlog again to see if you washed your faces or the dishes first.😁 Its such a joy seeing you two looking after each other, real teamwork. I've got to admit I laughed Charlie when you said "Lauren's just woke up for a wee and is now filling up the water bottles" 😁 I thought that's a novel way of reusing water. Haha new vlog next week - Charlie & Lauren stealth camp at Tesco! Haha we're all for recycling but I think urine bottles would be a bit far even for us! Haha poor old Tubby's been left for good I reckon! Even had to hide him last night whilst Oscar was round. He'll be under the bed covered in dust in no time!

It’s usually customary when using a pub stop over to actually give some custom to the pub as a way of saying thank you! A pub stop over is not stealth!
Well someone woke up on the wrong side of bed Glo. Sorry we forgot to mention in the video that the pub was closed due to a gas leak however the owner was kind enough to still let us use the carpark - which was stealth enough for us.

I have to laugh at the few people criticising for you not having a meal at the pub. Did they not notice the empty car park apart from Warrior. That's sort of a bit of a clue to the fact that the pub was closed. If it had been open you definitely would have had a meal there. Another brilliant video. I love watching your adventures. Before buying our first motorhome only 3months ago, we were looking at vans and van conversions. Sorry guys, we are 'just a bit' older than you and went for the extra home comforts. We have yet to go 'off grid' to see what the leisure battery is capable of. Hoping for The Highlands next year. In hindsight and if we were 30yrs younger we would be doing exactly what you are doing. We've spent many years camping under canvass !! Keep up the great Vlogs. Dave and Sophie x

Wow didnt know you had to ask permission to park your van i know on private property you need permission but what about a park or just in open field or is that against the law in U.K also do you have to pay to park at Jubilee Inn
Not sure what the rules are exactly to be honest, which is why we thought we'd just stick to app and find 'free & friendly' places so we wouldn't be disturbed by a knock on the van during the night haha. No Jubilee Inn was on the Camper contact app and completely free!
Common courtesy to get a drink or meal from any pub you stop at.

Stealth camping is sleeping in your vehicle without drawing attention to yourself. Camping where you're not supposed to is called 'illegal'.

Bit of a nippy night! It's all character building stuff lol.
Top Tip = Never drive and park nose into any public site, always reverse in. That way you can easily and move out if you have to.

We think if we ever buy a camper we will leave the off grid stuff until the summertime. Think you mentioned that you've looked possibly at solar panels, it's down to cost really isn't it. Lovely little vlog again showing that seamless relationship of yours. Haha how didn't you notice Charlie when you said about Lauren going for a wee and her filling up the water bottles. Little nuggets like this and Lauren's classic one liners are wonderful. Lauren going for a wee never fails to get a mention on your vlogs. Haha yes we would definitely advise saving the off grid stuff for summer, unless you have a little heater in the van! I know, I missed a gem on the hot water bottle joke haha. Glad you enjoyed it as always guys and that's very true - the marriage comments have finally taken a back seat haha. x
Small spaces are remarkably easy(easier, anyway) to heat. You have 3 heaters, to my knowledge. The stove/oven, van heater and several lights. A diesel heater is great, not suggesting otherwise. However, even a candle puts off heat and if you insulated the van well, small heat sources will do in a pinch. The most obvious heater is the oven. Turn it on for 30-45 minutes before you go to bed and use the heat from the stove or the oven to warm things up in the morning. You must insulate the van and cover the windows or all the heat will roll right out. Pick up a window cover and glue magnets on it to cover the maxxair or whichever fan. A single old-fashioned light bulb on a cord is enough to keep an engine from freezing at -30. Though that could burn some electric. The van heater, of course, especially if you run diesel. It works fine either way but diesel engines are happy to idle for a few hours while a gas engine will get cranky. If all the windows and the fan is sealed, run the heater until you are warm in the back and then turn it off and hang a divider. This WON'T work if you have an exhaust leak and I am not sure about any fumes from the stove. I have a couple of desk la!ps that are LED
Thanks for the tips Rebecca, not sure about using the stove as a heat source as it will probably gas us out but definitely will look into a little diesel heater at some point and need to find a cover for the window asap!

Hi Guys we are a couple of over fifties and we have an Apache motorhome and we have found that if you ask politely at most Public houses with car parks and who do food if you can park overnight they usually say yes, they are always onto a winner as we spend in thier bar and always leave no trace, if you are ever in the Liverpool area there is a wonderful pub called the Junction at Rainford they have a very large car park at the rear of thier pub with excellent food and entertainment every night, take care and stay safe. Another good tip if you park in some Tesco car parks the best ones are the 24hr ones if you ask the manager they usually will allow overnight parking again as long as you spend in their store, we use the one in Lancaster and a few others... Hey Mike, glad you're enjoying the vlogs. In answer to your questions, don't worry - this was before lockdown commenced and we schedule our videos in advance. Also agreed, it was very generous of the Landlord to let us use the car park for free. We planned on having dinner at the pub however they were closed due to a gas leak. Thanks for the support.
It's almost like watching a cute comedy show with you two. I know it's a vlog but the way you treat each other and act in general, it's sort of like a 2020 version of I Love Lucy, The cuteness and warm love between you guys is amazing.
