Koi Diary 158 - New Koi food and a feeding disaster

- So in my quest to ease feeding time for the Koi I have switched over to arguably the best Koi food available, Saki Hikari.
So ive gone for the Saki Balance, sinking, to stop the crazy messing when the feeder goes off.
Oh and I forgot to change the feeder settings lol 800g+ of food per day was being fed, thats 4kg of food used in 5 days, absolutely hilarious lol
Water has gone to pot and fish arent happy with water quality, oh well!

Great update Andy a good lesson for everyone using an auto feeder if changing food check what's coming out first 👍

That feeder would look good on a shelf 😉. I know we spoke about upping the feed, but that was maybe taking it a bit too far 🤣🤣🤣
LOL yeah 230g to 850g ish over night, well that is upping the food! Feeder looks ok to me in the corner, its the unfinished filter house and garden needs sorting first lol

I had the same issue when I changed over to the saki floating growth and sinking balance . I'm just waiting for the filters to catch up . I can't believe how much body they have put on since changing 👌🏼👍🏼
Glad its not just me lol. Good to hear they are growing, hope mine do the same, luckily with my set up back to normal 24hrs later ;-)

Wooohooo!!! Drum filters are deffo the way forward, but like ive shown they still need a little looking after! Good luck with it :-)

You may need to purge the bottom drain after that extra feed as it may have settled in the pipework
Yup correct, i emptied drum and opend drain valve a few times, suprised how much crud came through! There was some food and lumps of muck, so glad i did that

Great video as Allways thing is Darren told me at absolute koi that the uv will wear the drum seal a lot quicker I don’t no if you have noticed that and he told me to put it on the clean side
Yeah probably, as my old drum had this issue, but if i put it on the clean side id have to drill a hole in the drum as the UV isnt water tight at the top end of it so that would fail. For the sake of a new seal every while ill just change it if need be, i did this with my old drum and its not too difficult a job, just a bit fiddly

I knew i had to do it, but didnt realise the difference in weight would be that much lol hey ho sorted it now, bet the fish were like this is fantastic lol
I find it better over the years using 40/40 Sinking and Floating Balance and 20 % hiker wheat germ it all so save you money with the wheat germ being £100for 15kg I find it a perfect mix
Yeah deffo not the easiest on the pocket, im gonna see how i go and if the fish grow/condition better on it then re asses late this year. So far so good, just looks, smells better than al lthe other stuff ive tried
Good choice balance is what i use i do mix with colour 1 colour to 4 balance , my waters gone go pot to ammonia slightly up and slight nitrite tho just brought hanna kits from queni hope food is a winner for you waste wise youl notice a huge difference and you probly noticed no powder crap in bottom of bag
So far a week in all good, even with feeding a mountain of it lol.
@@koidiaries 4kg is £80 if buying in 2kg bags 🤣 good idea on sinking iv had to put feeder in middle of bridge to stop world war 3 have you got room for more k1 in your bio or you full
@@leeoliver4063 Yeah loads more room in bio chamber, but not sure id i need it TBH, 24 hours after the mega bad water reading the filters and a slightly faster trickle in and its back to near usual readings for nitrite and no Ammonia!! Wow yeah 2kg bags not the most economical way of feeding heavy lol
Went back to episode 32 to remind how you changed your drum seal as mine (Aqua source synergy 35 - but almost identical to the QK) now has multiple splits from the UV and letting dirt through. How is your seal holding up since changing? Mine only a year old!
This is a new drum and so far the seal looks good. The pond has been running 1 year this month, if it ever looks crappy ill change it, now i know how to do it shouldnt be too bad a job, but as you know just a bit fiddly
Aaahhhh, don't feel bad mate, my profi hopper used to take ten days to empty on Takazumi (never gonna use that again) filled it with Shori and it emptied in 3 days, never took into account size and weight of pellets.

Theyd of eaten the food at some point, maybe not in 5 days of course, so not all that bad, good to see my water parameters bounce back though to normal levels after 24 hours so not a complete disaster :-)

Sinking is the way forward, or atleast a percentage of it. Fish definitely prefer it. Although it can make them less friendly. Can't see that being a problem for yours though
LOL easily done but could of been avoided if id of measured the food out as soon as i put it in the feeder haha. At the moment they still come over expecting food when i go up to pond so we'll see, i did think this may be an issue just with the auto feeder so be interesting to see how it goes now they are feeding off the bottom

Would it help lessen the fish going nuts by moving the feeder out of the corner? Just wondering if them coming up for food is keeping it trapped in the corner, concentrating the madness in one small space?
Possibly the aerated drain will kick the food back though, im deffo feeling positive about this sinking food now, lot less carnage
Hi Andy, I have the same feeder, nice bit of kit. Does yours keep the time ok? Mine seems to gain about 1 minute a week which isn't the end of the world but still irritates.
Actually now you mention it when I checked it the other week and the time was out, so you maybe right!!! I may keep an eye on it and see lol

@@goplanit Sweet! Glad its ok, always nervous picking a fish for someone else, more so with the pressure of a picking order and the fish numbers dwindling. Hope it does well for you :-)
Just be careful you should only feed a 1/4 to 1/3 of sinking food because its harder for the koi to digest have been doing that for years because of the same problem and have 3000 gallon indoor conservatory pond about 14 koi all between 70cm and 100cm so not a bow wave as much
Really? Ive not heard of this being hard to digest. Obviously im going to monitor it over the coming months.
Andy really did you have an amminoa and nitrite spike and then turn the heater up so it's even more toxic to them🤦.

Yup heater up, only went up a bit. And 24hrs after water pretty much back on point ;-)

what's that work out to, just under a tenner a day to feed them lol
I used 4kg of food over them few days of monster food portions lol, so that works out about £8 per day for that amount of feed, jeez thats a lot!!!! LOL
Blimey, you’re taking the G&S seriously 4 kilos of food a week! You carry on at that rate and the patio will never get done 🤭🤭. It’s surprising how much more sinking food weighs, I’ve made a similar mistake myself. Pond looking great, your Shiro is amazing. Stay safe and well 👍🏻

How's the cost of your electric bill??
I don't have a electric meter on the pond but I think pond costs £3 to £4 a day to run on average.
If you put your uv in the drum side you won't get biofilm build up on the screen 👍
Dont fancy drilling a hole in the drum tbh and as its not water tight it will end up failing i bet as it will get soaked from the spray jets. Its no biggie cleaning the screen a couple of times a year i suppose

I don’t understand sinking food
It goes straight into my bottom drain
And always get a few floating food going into my skimmer

Yeah i think you may loose a few bits down the drain, i watched them this morning and literally noting wet down as they were straight on it. But watched a bit ago and when a few of them went down they wafted some pellets towards the drain so it seems a bit hit and miss here weather any makes itto the drain or not

I’m running nexus so it just ruins my water Quality and then the protein bubbles sage begin 🤦♂️
Feeding purely sinking with a treat in the evening in my opinion your playing with fire mate. The oils in it will never leave the water and gradually build up even with a trickle. It leaves a sticky residue everywhere especially on the drum mesh. I'm at 20% sinking for the summer and it's still probably too much
Hmmm interesting the blurb on Saki says its best used on its own and not mixed. Ill see how it goes, my foamer pipes have been working quite well so this hopefully will help with the sticky residue you mention, ive not noticed any oily mess on the surface and ive been way over feeding this week. Interesting though!
I had to put up some net screens up to stop my fish jumping out over the windows
The sinking food has now settled my neverves a little but thats always a worry with an infinity window i suppose
