      Apologies for the late response. You can, but in finance, it’s typically more difficult. Your best bet would be to network aka ask someone to make a phone call and vouch that you’re good for the role without the degree. However, some banks use a degree as a qualification to avoid discrimination lawsuits when they have layoffs or when they don’t promote internally.

Facebook and amazon hire business analysts or data scientists, and, if I’m not mistaken, companies in NY/NJ hire quants/investment bankers and everything in between - JPmorgan, Goldman Sachs, Bank of America. Your skills are needed everywhere my friend and as a quant/actuary, you will probably be coding and doing math. Just wanted to get your opinion. I am an accounting major but was wondering if I should switch to finance? I know that if you are doing private equity or looking at analyzing financials for venture capital requires a heavy accounting understanding. So would I just be better off sticking with accounting and then getting a CFA? Even with what you said about your current role seems to require a lot of accounting knowledge, so just was wondering what you think?

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I think accounting is a non-traditional way of going about trying to break into private equity. However, I know TH-camrs that are investment bankers have gotten into their careers with accounting degrees. From investment banking, they typically advance into private equity. It also depends on how far along you are in your degree. If you’re about to graduate, I would say to just finish your accounting degree and pass the CFA. It honestly all depends on your goals - if you want private equity, you should switch to finance, and try your best to keep your GPA up (above a 3.5), again, depending on how far along you are in your degree. Finance jobs like that are very traditional in the way they recruit. That being said, an underwriting job or basic analyst job sometimes doesn’t require a finance degree or the CFA and will hire someone with an accounting degree/economics degree/math degree. I work with someone who has a BBA in business administration, and a masters in accounting.. and another person with a masters in economics.

      I’ve heard a lot of nursing horror stories as well lol creativity is absolutely necessary when performing an analysis.. but there is some math. However, I wouldn’t say that a lot of entry level analyst position use too much math. In college, you’ll definitely do algebra if you studied traditional finance, but that’s all.

Considering my long term aim is to become an entrepreneur and not to stick around here in finance, will this field be beneficial for me personally, in my investments and other endeavours. I'm in my last year of graduation(bachelors I'm business administration) as of now.

      I apologize for not replying sooner. Both are effective and both will teach you enough to get into a role but not enough to start your own business. You have to look out for opportunity. Look to recognize what you are good at and bad at, be unique enough, but follow others who are successful and study their fundamentals.
      Even though these certs/degrees will not give you enough to start a business, it is still helpful in terms of understanding and base knowledge in my opinion. However, because they are unnecessary, people will say otherwise.

    • @RicardoR1

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  2 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Definitely is. The reason why I’m asking is so that you can showcase those skills that transfer over to credit analysis, in your resume. Talk about the ratios you know, understand the ratios mentioned in the video, and do a little research on financial statements. You might have access to people’s personal financial statements. If you can understand the financial statements (basic ones are easy to understand ), then you have a great chance in an interview. In portfolio analysis, do you do any glancing over the financial statements for the particular investments that make up the portfolio? You can write that in your resume. Anything that you think remotely translates to an analyst position, make sure to highlight.

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      I’m pursuing an MS in Business Analytics, and hoping that will leverage my skill set to get into a prestigious MBA.
      It’s kind of related, but some firms or finance institutions won’t see it as so valuable. It all depends. My bank values classic finance or accounting techniques more than they would if I knew how to automate some things with a computer software program. I love coding and finance, and hopefully I can become a consultant.
      It’s more common for someone to just have a bachelors degree (mostly in finance, accounting, or economics).
      To set yourself apart, an MBA or CFA designation (or just passing CFA Level 1) will land you a position as an analyst, assuming all goes well in the interview and your resume is presentable.

      If you want to be a data analyst, learn excel, another language (Python, R, or SQL) and tableau or PowerBI. From being a credit analyst, I was able to work on those skills. Now, I can apply to data analyst jobs and get interviews. However, to be a financial analyst or credit analyst, excel is the only thing you’d need to know along with financial ratios, financial statements, and other accounting/finance principles.
      Being a data analyst, you can work with big data sets to extract insights to make business decisions..
      As a financial analyst, you deal with business data in order to evaluate a stock/bond/loan/business and determine the value the company could potentially earn by a merger, determining credit worthiness, or valuation of a product/business.

      I loved reading the intelligent investor, security analysis, and anything about warren buffet.. but don’t limit yourself to only warren buffet’s mentality and how he thinks about the stock market.
      For sure, for a career in finance, you will MOST LIKELY have to learn a few things out of some textbooks or get a formal education (Not true for everyone).
      It all depends on what you want to learn about.. theres quantitive analysis, traditional finance, corporate finance, credit analysis, equity, trading and everything in between.
      Imo, the most important and most practical books in my traditional role as a credit risk analyst have been the ones about people and lifestyle.
      48 laws of Power or human nature by Robert Greene, books by goggins, extreme ownership, how to win friends and influence people, Optionality..

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  3 ปีที่แล้ว

      If you’re having a hard time getting interviews, then it’s the resume (either there are errors, you need to attain more qualifications, or it’s not marketed correctly). If you’re having a hard time getting hired after the interview, it can be that you need help with your interviewing skills.
      However, I’ve heard of people who have applied 50 times to 50 different places and were rejected 50 times after multiple interviews.
      I think this all depends on where you are applying. You might have to relocate or look for a remote position. I know that, sometimes, this isn’t what people want to hear.

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      One more strategy I’ve heard of is getting hired for a role within whatever company (for a role that isn’t necessarily the one you want), and then applying to the position desired internally. Of course this is no guarantee like with everything else in life, but it increases your odds!

    Hey Ricardo, can you tell me what growth prospects are there if I opt for an Financial Analyst profile?

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It depends on the product. For stock, I believe you eventually become a manager and then move up to Vice President eventually. I’m not too familiar with that, and I’ve heard a lot of people even transition into investment banking or private equity.
      If you’re a financial analyst for loans, then you can get into a management position, or become a loan officer.. again, some still go into investment banking.
      Eventually, you go all the way to Vice President.. and depending on how small the company or bank is, even CEO.
      But its difficult.. the bigger the corporation, the harder it is to get into being on the board. Typically, people gain a bunch of experience and then move companies to be on the board or in an executive management position.

    • @RicardoR1

      From the degree plan, if they actually do teach you the classes listed on the curriculum, it’s a great option. Remember, you’ll most likely find a job in the area you attended university. I don’t know if those credits will transfer to the US.
      If you complete the degree with a decently high GPA, you’ll probably find work right out of university. Negotiate your salary, and list all the relevant coursework on your CV or resume

    If i study financial analyst, would it help me with the stock market? My goal is to live from the stock market, but id like a backup that would give me a good salary and a stable job. Is financial analyst the way to go?

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      It would help you, yes.. but I also think you need to do a lot of self studying.. read a lot of extra books on the subject. I’d recommend reading “the intelligent investor” and “security analysis”.
      Getting a bachelors degree in finance would probably help, or study for the CFA.
      There’s a lot of people that don’t do any of these things that make money in the stock market, but they do a lot of their own learning. I’d recommend statistics, finance theory, and learning some excel for starters.

      1. Apply to finance jobs. Update your resume for the specific career you want in finance. Your accounting experience will be useful
      2. Make sure your interview skills are excellent.
      To do this, look up the career you want and make sure you meet the qualifications. If you meet 80% of the requirements, then still apply and follow step 1 and 2.

    • @RicardoR1

      Finance major with a concentration in Risk Management - so essentially finance with way more math (calculus 3, probability, financial mathematics, business analytics). My GPA was low tbh I had so many things going on at the same time.. it’s why I say to keep up your GPA because I didn’t have that much opportunity, and hell yeah I’m taking the CFA! I’ve gone over all the concepts, I just need to study and get everything mastered. You can do it! Put your mind to it and if you pass level 1, it’ll look excellent on your resume. You’ll get hired with solely level 1 passed and employers will let you test for level 2 and 3 while you’re working.. maybe even pay for it.

    Is it important for a financial analyst to learn some programming language or take a data science course as well?

    • @RicardoR1
      @RicardoR1  4 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Traditionally, no. A bachelors degree alone can land you some jobs. However (just my opinion), it’s going to set you apart if you know how to use coding. I think it’s super valuable and you’ll be way better off in the future because job growth for business analysts and financial analysts are growing.. meaning competition will keep rising.
      Firstly, make sure you know excel well.
      Secondly, (good news), learning the first coding language is the hardest; it’s easier when you try learning the second one.
