Bold prediction: The final shot of The Penguin season one will be Oz Cobb looking out at Gotham, seeing the Bat-Signal glowing in the night sky. Oz may have defeated his enemies, but he hasn’t beaten his biggest foe. Guess who’s back?
My favorite thing DC has done (given it doesn't fall off). I've been waiting for a show that had a similar dark tone to Daredevil with the writing to back it up. What's impressed me the most is the escalation. Many series will end on a big cliffhanger with each episode but deflates the next episode until the rushed ending. Penguin keeps escalating while continuing to knock down dominoes and has twists the make it even more compelling. Makes me appreciate the somewhat slow start. Also has my 2nd favorite Colin Farrell performance after In Bruges.
I thought this series was going to be good, but I didn't expect it to be one of my all time favorites. Goddamn I love it. My only criticism is that there's not enough Solomon Grundy cameos. Like, I know they didn't want to turn this into a Solomon Grundy show, but I would have appreciated more hints about him. Like, when he's not in a scene, have some other character mention his name or bust out a "Mondays, right?" joke. Really, I just feel that Solomon Grundy is fundamental to Gotham's mythology and he should have approximately a third to half of the episodes devoted to him. Otherwise, 10 out of 10. :)
My hot take: I love this show. It’s a great show. However, I can tolerate a Batman-less series that takes place in Gotham for one season-maybe two. If this drags on for multiple seasons-with Matt Reeves hiding Batman-then I’m out. How long can they keep saying, “Well, Batman’s busy. He’s doing something else.” I love Penguin, but eventually, we’ll need Batman to make an appearance.
