  • In this video, we won't be wrenching on a vehicle... instead, we picked up a different kind of classic! Check out this sweet 1941 General Electric refrigerator that we picked up for $50 as a new addition for our new garage. The previous owner said it was a bit "shocky", so it required a bit more than just paint. "Betty White" got some new wiring, fresh insulation, a replacement light socket and switch, then a coat of paint. Stay tuned to see where this cool new fridge goes in our next video!

Sucker is heavy huh? I have a 1939 model. I picked it up myself, and I'm no muscle bound hunk either. I walked it corner to corner tilted in the back of my suv, wiggled it up towards the front seat with maybe 1/2 inch to spare, in closing the back window. Got it home, wiggled it to the corner of the garage door and there it sits. I will not be moving it by myself again, I think it must weigh 300 lbs. if it weighs an ounce. There are quite a few of these that come up for sale on Ebay, they must be made like tanks, to have lasted almost 100 years, and I'm sure most of them are still working. Oh mine, was missing the crispers and little 'E' shelf hangers on one side. I was able to purchase shelves, and crispers from a seller who turned his fridge into a kegalator, so I got all the parts I need.

Worth their weight, that's for sure! This little fridge is still working wonderfully for us.

What was your strategy for cleaning the metal handles and racks? My project has grime on them and debating between bar keepers friend stainless steel or some other product? Great video!

Did you use an adhesive when replacing the gasket? My husband and I are replacing the one on my great grandmothers’ fridge and this is where we are stuck. Hers was rotted and we can’t figure out how it was done.

Where is the freezer door? I wouldn't put the time and effort into fixing that fridge without it's freezer door.

We had one like this and the freezer door was just a thin metal door with a curved in front. The freezer will keep producing ice and doesn't have an automatic defroster you have to turn it to defrost. Don't use any tools to remove the ice like an ice pick or you'll puncture it and the gas will come out. Years ago we had one like this and it had what we called a potato bin in the bottom- a big round knob in the middle of the door opened a bin angled down.

How cool!! And good to know. Thanks for sharing 🙂

Yes exactly how they work. I found a fan blowing into the unit with the door open, helps defrost it quicker. They made electric units that heated up and helped defrost them, but I think it heats the gas up and throws them out of balance. The owners manuals say to put in pans of hot water inside them to help defrost them quicker. I also have timers, that you plug into the wall outlet, and plug the fridge into the timer. For one hour or how ever long you desire, it will shut off the fridge and is supposed to heat up the freezer compartment enough to melt off any frost and make it so you don't build up so much frost and do not have to defrost it manually that often.

I’ve got that potato bin GE fridge. It’s from 1938, and in excellent condition inside. The outside isn’t bad, but isn’t pristine either.

@@leahcim38 Thanks, I just checked out your listing. Unfortunately, the dimensions of your door is larger than the opening on my freezer. It's a shame, I would have purchased it in a heartbeat if it was the right size. The door is in perfect condition.

🤔😭 I thought about it that's known as catastrophic catastrophe back in the day when a bear or a band of raccoons get in and destroy your food that's another two or three days worth of work in the forest chopping down trees getting firewood or lumber or whatever and then delivering it another two day journey to into town from the outback untamed wilderness we're pioneers we're Quakers and shakers movers and Quakers or whatever the heck and then once they chop the wood prepare the wood take the wood into town to sell the wood to the furniture makers and then they get a little money can go to the old dry goods store and purchase some dry goods and get a bag of beans chunk of salt pork you know I would have went with my God damn about some lead for my goddamn some good rifles me and my boy and we went and got us a buffalo we had a good little wagon and a nice strong couple horses females and a male to breed make more horses to sell to get a different bloodline and keep on rebelling against the problems of life keep my family strong that's what I'm about home is where the heart ❤️ is 🤔🧏🏾‍♂️👀
