Sounds like the beginning of a joke, but one of the craziest Banjo Tooie myths is that Jolly Roger runs a gay bar in Jolly Roger's Lagoon. And as crazy as it sounds, there are actually some pretty convincing examples that support this myth. So in this video, I try to determine if in fact there is a gay bar in Banjo Tooie.

A bit late here, but I think there are 2 other things about Jolly Roger that people over look.
The first is that Jolly and Maggie are literally the only frog and toad species in the whole game. Plus if we go meta, they are the only frog and toad people in the whole franchise. Unless you count Flibbits but I think comparing Jolly to a Flibbit is specist. My point here is, there is literally no one else to compare Jolly and Maggie to species wise so it could be possible that just happens to normal for them.
The other one is that Jolly runs a smuggling buisness. So its possible that "rush hour" is actually just Jolly getting more products. Then he pays his workers with Doubloons and Ginger Beer.

Merry Maggie also seems to be wearing a wig if you look close. It doesn't look attached to her model. It could be because of animation but I liek to think she's wearing a wig.

The little gem of Jolly Roger's bar always made me smile at the "questionable" implications. Rare did an excellent job tiptoeing that line of uncertainty throughout the whole game. Since it's a kids game, it has to be extremely ambiguous so I believe what they did was intentional, otherwise there would be no reason for all these design choices all in the same level btw.
They've already snuck in a crap ton of innuendos, so it's not that far fetched.

I just got this game for the 1st time as a birthday gift a few weeks ago. Other than playing Banjo Kazooie in the late 90s, I had no prior knowledge of anything of what to expect with this game.
Literally the moment I encountered Jolly Roger, I immediately thought "Ok, this character is totally coded as gay. Partner? Uh huh. Oh! He refers to them as a 'she'. I mean wouldn't if be funny if they were actually trans?" I additionally thought of how incredibly progressive that would be for a game from the year 2000 (I personally came out as gay in 2003).
When I encountered Marry Maggie I immediately miss-gendered them as male until the character revealed who she was. I see them as trans for sure.
At the end of the day, they're just video game characters... but honestly the developers totally made a conscious decision to make them they way they are. From my 2023 perspective, that is awesome!

I think a lot gays/gay allies tried to claim Jolly Roger and Merry Maggie as gay icons, and that's fine, whatever makes them like Banjo-Tooie more is a good thing.
