  • The BMW i3 was first revealed as a concept in 2011. A couple of years later, the full production version in fully electric and Range Extender variants was unveiled in 2013. The car has undergone many revisions in the meantime, including a battery capacity increase to 94Ah in 2016, a facelift (LCI) in 2017, a second battery upgrade to 120Ah in 2018, with many new colours and bump to the standard specification in 2020.
We also go through the limited editions which were available in the UK - the Mr Porter, Fluid Grey, and Unique Forever.

Great video! I have no intention of swapping our 120AH red i3 for very many years - it's a fun car to drive, and still (in my opinion) has a unique and quite futuristic look, not matched by any of the boring electric rehashes of ICE vehicles that BMW are bringing out. I saw somewhere that recently it was voted as a vehicle that is most likely to become a "classic" car (and therefore in demand) in the future. It's great to see Wisely continuing to promote it 👍

I agree with all of your comments. I still have mine until December 2023 and love every minute of driving it. See my post for the replacement when the lease runs out.?

Loads of research there. So happy to grab a last i3 ( my i3S unique forever is in the vid) as you say I was not a BMW customer before ( though I had a MINI) but the iX1 and countryman are not really my cup of tea, I’ll be hanging on to my UF for a while!!!

I love my i3s but when the lease runs out in December 2023 this will be my first and last BMW for the reasons you have mentioned at the end of this video. The replacement is very likely to be the Upcoming Smart #1 which is on a dedicated platform, is rear wheel drive. 268 BHP 66kwh battery.

Love videos like this, with all the quirks (eg self parking dropped on i3s). My jucaro beige i3s is amazing, high spec and near unique! Don’t think I’ve seen another on the road! Goes so well with the brown leather. Genuinely sad it’s ending production, but happy as it adds to the demand for this brilliant machine.

Guys, you are my absolute favorite I3 channel. I bought my almost fully equipped 2014 REX with 132000km last year and changed the battery and some other parts, but i learnd still so many about the i3 simply looking videos on this channel. I am sure you would put the missing finishing touches on my i3. Would be a cool roadtrip from Austria ;)

@@trick700 The reason was the REx proportion. Before swap it was at 30%, now

Just thought - you missed out the best geek fact (which you had on another video). The early sunroof cars had a carbon roof too, instead of a plain black roof. Also, that the LCIs nose is marginally longer than the original to aid pedestrian safety.

  • @orangeman3343
    @orangeman3343 ปีที่แล้ว +3

Shame BMW not offering up a replacement to the carbon/aluminium bespoke i3. I like the iX1 from what I've seen so far but just a larger car than what I need so won't be considering upgrading to one I don't think. I'll likely be holding onto my i3 for many , many years. Maybe the first car I keep until it dies, or I do😁 . That fluid grey limited edition looked superb at the end. I assume those were for LHD markets only.
The i3 converted me from ICE based cars but thankfully also at the same time as not needing to drive the long trips I used to cover on a weekly basis.

The marketing folks who see the iX1 as a legitimate alternative are delusional. Fortunately I bought a 2021 that should serve me well for a decade plus. Plenty of time to see how the EV-specific Neue Klasse projected for 2025 develops.

Having been drawn to the i3 from 12 years of Toyota ownership, it was the high tech small fast and useful design that took my eye and caused me to buy. I love the i3 and I hate the proposed replacements which look dated have no inspiration and are definitely not a small Super Car which the i3 is. So BMW you have made a huge mistake not keeping the i3 and building on this excellent platform. After my i3 I will be looking around the market for something as inspiring.

What a fantastic video for the first time i3 buyer, like myself, and a very condensed way of picking through the many configurations to decide which is the best car to pick. I'll keep looking but now with a better insight to the model that I would like.

The i3 is still pretty radical compared to current electric cars. Ours has 126k miles on it. Looking to have it completely overhauled and upgrade the battery, if possible. It's my wife's car actually...I have motorbikes instead of my own car. When you push the i3 it is almost as much fun as a sportsbike. I hate the idea of replacing it with any other than another i3. The construction means the shell could last a very long time.

You’re correct about current and long term i3 owners (since 2014). The ix1 will not be offered in the US and I wouldn’t be interested in an SUV . Currently it’s the i4 and the iX, neither stand out as replacement of the i3. The i4 is a compliance car and the iX- is too large for my needs. As a long time car owner of BMWs, I may venture to another brand like VW, may be the ID Buzz camper version as a retirement gift to myself. Great videos!

This history lesson was quite something ❤. Ever since I test drove th i3 Rex before the pandemic, I fell in love with it. I now have an opportunity to buy a 2018 July UK registered model with a Rex add on… was wondering if anyone has any views on this model range and whether they are safe. Hearing about i3 Rex’s catching fire after BMW service including an Italian police vehicle which made me do some research and I landed here🙈

6k enjoyable miles, low cost (4+ miles per kWh) in 12m in a 22 i3S. In terms of feature evolution, 11 kWh charging good, given my nearest charger is a ‘free’ 22 kWh Podpoint unit. Rarely explored Sport mode or used rapid charging, hoping to extend tyre and battery life. Range suits close to 100% of our trips with almost all in circa 100 miles of north London. Smaller battery packs must have caused some anxiety. One hairy trip in heavy snow but got home and rare anyway.

I did a lot of looking at these on so many sites, they convinced me I should buy one. This has twin sun roofs, is that a common option? Thanks for the video, wasn't sure if I would ever go EV, but these cars are something special!

      Depending on what you mean...
Out of the approximately 400 examples we sold so far none have required the high-voltage battery to be replaced.
We have replaced quite a few of the small auxiliary 12V batteries though.

Another excellent video from Wisely. This i3 owner won’t be transitioning to an iX1, that’s for sure. Not because I am unhappy with my i3 experience, far from it, but because BMW have completely messed up their electrification program since the i3. Part of the charm of the i3 is its radical design and choice of materials in addition to it being envisaged as an EV from the drawing board. Perhaps BMW will re-discover the amazing engineering of the i3 in the future, but their current EV offerings are quite pathetic by comparison - shame. My next EV? Probably a Tesla.
