  • The Piper at the Gates of Dawn by Pink Floyd is seen as a masterpiece. But what are the differences in sound between the pressings? In this video I compare a 2016 digital stereo pressing by Bernie Grundman to a 1969 German stereo (with UK stampers) to a 1967 UK Stereo and to a 2022 Mono pressing from the original analogue mastertapes (also by Bernie Grundman).

i heard extra guitar parts on the mono that the stereo doesn't have,, i always thought the tone on the stereo mix was bad like if some one had turned the centre equaliser of a 5 band graphic equaliser up full and the other four down low, but the mono mix fixes this for me.

hello everyone I have three versions of this marvel of 60's psychedelia
The original stereo version, the remastered mono version and the remastered stereo version and after a very close listen I can say that the best are two...the original stereo version and the remastered mono version....voices are much clearer open and the sound in general is really clean and wide while in the remastered stereo version the sounds are very balanced but a little subdued compared to the other two versions..... I can say that the remastered mono version is truly remarkable.

I own the same German pressing, and the suspicious bit is that those matrix numbers are written in a different font than those found on British LP's. so those might as well be different stampers, albeit with same numbers. sounds great anyway, and I got it perfectly mint very cheap.

You are right about that. But the thing is; is sounds like it is the same mastering as well (there is a difference in texture and warmth which can also mean it has to do with different vinyl, factory or aging of the stamper (but I’m not sure about the possebility of that last option).

I think the UK 'A Nice Pair' uses original British stampers for Piper. New subscriber.

You should compare to the early 80's UK "fame" reissue. All analog and mastered by Harry Moss (HTM) who was the guy who cut all the Beatles albums for EMI. Relatively cheap too.
