Helen Donath - fabulous! Everding - not so much. He can't get over himself. She loves her son. Terrific. Everding is bothered by that for some reason. Why? She explains with great articulateness why she thinks Pamina should not appear topless. He can't accept that and argues with her. It couldn't have been much fun working with such a bully. Her German is flawless, her insights just wonderful and her humanity peerless. In spite of Everding, a wonderful interview.
I got a different impression: Everding is not "bothered", he just pokes a little bit fun on her mentioning her son all the time, but he doesn't really mind. And she realizes that she indeed mentioned her son a bit too often and then turns it into a kind of "running gag" between her and Everding... But both seem to have a lot of fun doing that... "He can't accept that and argues with her." -- Where did you hear that? Listen again carefully: first he poses the hypothetical question "what would you do, if a Regisseur would request you to play that particular scene (Pamina with her mother's dagger) topless?" They discuss that a bit and then he agrees completely with her. In the end he even says something like "You are right. And I (when staging his next Zauberflöte) would not request such a thing, because it doesn't make any sense."
