  • From the 2000 BMFF Program: The Grand Gentleman of the mountains, Sir Edmund Hillary became a household name around the world after his 1953 first ascent of Mount Everest with Sherpa Tenzing Norgay. He has always insisted that his triumph be shared with all mankind and to the betterment of the people of Nepal and the Himalaya. He has devoted a major part of his life to this humanitarian end. Through the Sir Edmund Hillary Foundation, Hillary has helped build 26 schools, three airfields, two hospitals and 112 village clinics in Nepal and funded a 10-year reforestation program in Sagarmatha National Park.

What wonderful surprise to find this video unexpectedly recommended by TH-cam. Sir Edmund's service and commitment to the Sherpa people of Nepal is very impressive - as much so as the people he serves. I pray for all Sherpa children in the Khumbu (at the very least) and hope that they gain enough education that no Sherpa ever again has to risk his life on the mountain unless it is their choice to do so. I also admired his reaction to the 40-odd climbers who walked past injured climber David Sharp. He spoke like a true elder statesman of the mountain.

I don’t even know why I’m interested if Mallory summited.
The answer wouldn’t change my life for a second.
Still, I’m grateful for Ankers expedition finding Mallory& looking for answers.
Mountaineers all have a big ego. So, I don’t think Mallory would mind that we’re still interested in him.
