likewise. a big part of it for me is that you can HEAR just how much effort and how much skill is on all of his records, i`m happy to pay for such a constant high level of quality if it means it keeps coming! :)
"If you cannot hand failure then I dont think success is an option so maybe just learn to fail efficiently and then keep going" I think that Devin's quote is one of the best I ever heard...such an inspiration
Very nice interview. I also like the calm way you handle everything. Many interviewers say "yeah" "... "right right right" fucking 200 times. You just kept quiet most of the time while Devin was talking. That's how it should be, so great job. Good questions as well. Keep up the great work.
I also agree. The interviewer was very respectful to Devin and I think Devin felt very comfortable, despite being tired. Devin's articulation of his creative process was very interesting and deserved to have respectful silence while it was explained. I thoroughly enjoyed this video; thank you for the upload. :)
Devin is not only excellent musician, but also a skilled spokesman. I became inspired by his music and recently started recording my own music. Thanks Devin.
A very special human being. If you ask him how he's doing and he gives you an answer that's heartfelt and applicable to the moment. Not some ad hoc cliche'. Devin as a musician? Not enough room here... Let's all hope this man keeps enriching this world with his vision. We all benefit. Everyone.
"Tungsten body, glowing mind" -- the musicality of these words is just mind blowing... Thank you devin for writing just from your mind-flow and not overthinking the lyrics :')
I thoroughly enjoyed Devin's explanation of Ki and Deconstruction, where that work came from and what he was communicating through those pieces. There are many levels to enjoy music and even more so with Devin Townsend's stuff!
I have listened to Devin for a good while now, and sometimes when that happens, you kind of take the artist's music for granted. But now that i'm thinking of him and his music from a perspective, he seems incredible. Especially because the DTP. Five (or soon six) very much different kinds of albums from this one guy. And he makes it all in such a short period of time. He is such an innovative and efficient musician.
Pretty cool that they went out on a tour with Children of Bodom, considering that Alexi Laiho is going to look like Strapping Young Lad-era Devin in about 20 years.
People are being spoon fed music by mainstream, which there is nothing wrong with, but its so processed and refined its all similar musically People do like new interesting music but by the time they hear it becomes not as original and becomes about money and the music they once enjoyed becomes to smooth in a way, its not the rough edgy soundtheyremember and was known for Devin is Great because he keeps reinventing himself People just need to hear him and other forms of music so go show a friend
21:00 Talking about Nickelback. I hate their music, but I couldn't agree more with Devin here. They do what they do because that's what they do, just like Devin. Such a mature guy these days.
lol i had a feeling i had already seen this interview.. but it's just because I saw the interview he did with like metal something or other like 3 months ago
I LOVE Devy, and think he's still one of the most talented dudes in music, BUT, the thought that I will never get to watch that skullethaired, spitgobling crazy psycho and BRILLIANT metal icon on stage EVER again! I respect Dev's choice, but i'll miss the 'old' Dev forever!
I actually do buy his stuff cos he's an amazing artist and i support him. I was just taking the piss cos he doesn't seem to care about downloading as long as people hear his music
I also respect him for passing on the opportunity to shit all over bands like Nickleback, even though they are indeed objectively bad. It shows how genuine and no bullshit he is as a person.
Sure, but he deserves to be up there with Metallica and Iron Maiden and that stuff. He has made so much music and worked with it for so freakin many years, and he is at the same fame level as maybe Periphery or something. Maybe not even that big.
Nah, what it was, was that after Canada sent us Devin, they realized "Shit, that's too much awesomeness for one guy! We need to send some shitty stuff to balance it out!"
I can't fathom that people could disrespect Devin at his own show for not being "heavy" enough or something. Do they even know who he is and what he's done in metal?
likewise.

This is one of the most honest musicians in the fucking world. No arrogancy, just him and a guitar. This man is MUSIC
What an intelligent and introspective man, much respect for him and his music.
why is he not super famous? he rules

Great interview. I sat and watched the entire thing in one go and I was all ears. Dev is so interesting, wise and inspirational.
Devin is not only excellent musician, but also a skilled spokesman. I became inspired by his music and recently started recording my own music. Thanks Devin.

Everyone.
I love Devin, he's such a cool, laid-back person AND a extremely great musician!
cheers Dev!
Still to this date, the best interview with Dev. Location, lighting and good questions. No interrupting and letting the person talk. Just great.
he is very well spoken
The way this man constructs and expresses his thoughts makes me want to be a better human being.
What an intelligent, insightful and eloquent guy. Great interview.
I could listen to Devin talk for hours on end.
I recently discovered Devin's work. A lot of my sentences sentences now have "right?" tagged on at the end.
True story.
"Tungsten body, glowing mind" -- the musicality of these words is just mind blowing... Thank you devin for writing just from your mind-flow and not overthinking the lyrics :')

Went to his tour as well, got a photo with him =]
You're a genius, Devin. Good luck!
A really great, in-depth interview, thanks to everyone at Guitar Messenger!

i love how Devin just takes the interviewer over and talks the whole time. the interview, "umm hmm, yeah, sure, yes"
great stuff...thanks for posting and conducting these interviews!
sick with mono and still saw this show last summer, hes awesome
The philosophy on lyrics is epic!
When i see this guy play i have a reason too keep making music.
Pretty cool that they went out on a tour with Children of Bodom, considering that Alexi Laiho is going to look like Strapping Young Lad-era Devin in about 20 years.
Nick Butler eh, I give him ten years. Alexi's already 36 lol
Well... 2021 came to shut that vision down... RIP Alexi
@AnnatarYoung Amen to that. His honesty just makes me appreciate his music even more...
Interviewer is obviously a huge fan and having a hard time containing himself. I'd be the same way Devin Townsend is my favorite everything.
The interviewer seems indeed like a huge fan and a looks a bit awkward but asks a lot of really good questions. Great in-depth interview!
i know dev's probably tired as hell, but it's always awesome to get some cool insight into the genius chaos of his brain. :) thanks, dev!
It's the track called "Sumeria" from his new record Deconstruction. Amazing song.
Love the Shining shirt!
Devin seems like he would be the coolest uncle/relative.
awesome interview, everything this man says is gold #GuitarMessenger Rulez
this video keeps popping up in my related videos on the most unrelated stuff
love him and his shining shirt!!!!!!!!! love love love D:<
"Don't shit where you eat." Never heard that one before, so using now.
"If you can't handle failure, then I don't think succes is an option." - Devin Townsend

Awesome.
That's a beautiful voice crack on the word "lengthy" at 28:15...
gotta love this guy!!!
11:36 FTW
This guy is amazing! He's like the Frank Zappa of metal.
21:00
Talking about Nickelback. I hate their music, but I couldn't agree more with Devin here. They do what they do because that's what they do, just like Devin. Such a mature guy these days.
Obscura!!!
Download all the Devy!!
@Drumdude1235 Sumeria, I think. It's off the deconstruction album.
lol i had a feeling i had already seen this interview.. but it's just because I saw the interview he did with like metal something or other like 3 months ago
Masterclass please?
The way he says "about" XD
@apuforyou with other vids it's when he says 'Indeed'.
YT has changed the way the suggestions box works(or doesn't work?). When I'm listening to Anaal Nathrakh I get My Little Pony suggestions.
I have a question for the uploader. Is that Evan from the Massachusetts band Wilderun?
YES
I'm afraid I am new to Townsend-can anyone tell me the name of the tune at the beginning of this clip?
devin big ball
Lol I was thinking the same things. I actually wrote down some phrases he just threw out there that really got me thinking.
Yup. It's a measure of how damn good he is that it doesn't matter*.
*Of course it never bloody matters really, like what you like.
what's the song snipbit played at the beginning?
How about buy it and support the guy -_-
oh nice, Devin's wearing a Shining shirt.
I actually do buy his stuff cos he's an amazing artist and i support him. I was just taking the piss cos he doesn't seem to care about downloading as long as people hear his music

I wish he relased CDs in poland id buy every single one of them 50 times
Przecież możesz normalnie kupić w sklepach internetowych, Fanie, Merlinie, Gigancie itd...
nie wiedziałem, ale narazie i tak nie moge nie mam karty :P dopiero 18 strzeliłem
What's the name of the song in the begining?
It makes me happy that he's wearing a Shining shirt lol
Ki = birth
Addicted! = Teen years
Deconstruction = Heavy metal midlife crisis
Ghost = nearing death
Sure, but he deserves to be up there with Metallica and Iron Maiden and that stuff. He has made so much music and worked with it for so freakin many years, and he is at the same fame level as maybe Periphery or something. Maybe not even that big.
Fuck yeah, Shining t-shirt!
Gwar did it a couple of years before I did it :)
Oh god i'm so getting a bunch of my metalhead fans around and doing that drinking game XD
Nah, what it was, was that after Canada sent us Devin, they realized "Shit, that's too much awesomeness for one guy! We need to send some shitty stuff to balance it out!"
cool place
Guitar messenger, PLEASE DO A MASTERCLASS WITH THE FACELESS :D
Right.
@Drumdude1235 That would be Sumeria off of the Deconstruction album
Lets get some crumpets and rock that shit
I can't fathom that people could disrespect Devin at his own show for not being "heavy" enough or something. Do they even know who he is and what he's done in metal?
Where's the masterclass?
on tour with CoB, Obscura and SEPTIC F*CKIN FLESH!!!
Wow Dev uses the same VST as me :o
Louis Connelly Oh hey! Looks who it is :)
that opening track sounds like someone combined the Hitman 2 theme with metal.
right?
Right?
R.I.P Alexi Laiho.
@22FretsIsNotEnough You don't need them anymore...? :D
Evan and Devin?
Right
Devin Townsend =Canada's apology for Nickelback.
I think my IQ goes up every time I hear Dev talk.
nice comment amigo, but Devin himself is a Nickelback fan:)
'Right?'
His next album should be spoken word
@DaveDoomm The Canadian way, buddy ;)
why does it?
One comes after the other.
Sumeria
26:27 I KNEW Dev was into Jung
