Thank you for explaining the temp surfing thing (and the steam trick). I'd heard about it, but wasn't getting the full explanation till now. Thanks so much!

After warming the portafilter and group head, I remove the PF and purge the brew button until all the steam is gone and only water comes out. Place the PF back in, switch the steam button for 20 seconds, no more no less, turn off and brew coffee. It will maintain temp for about 30 sec then the brew light drops off. Works wonders

Basically do the same to steam. Except I purge the wand with water and steam for about 3-5 sec. Then off the brew and let the steam build up until it stops sputtering. Turn off the wand, count to20, open wand and steam without the light coming back on. Constant hot steam. After I’m done I purge the boiler with no power to the unit

I added a PID but the chinese manufacturer labeled it incorrently and didn't work, later he sent me a message in aliexpress apologizing and with the correct label information. Made it work to tell me the temp, but it still doesn't work correctly, it is like doing temp surfing but with the temperature information, so at the end was worth it still.

Doesn’t the hard pre-infusion remove water from the puck?

I put a pid on so my temp is fine. My question is why do my shots pull in 10 seconds? I’ve been pulling shots since January with the same effect. I have a $200 grinder on the finest setting. I have all the proper tools etc. it always comes out too fast

Most probably your grinder, (plus possibly the amount of grind per yield)
I would say a minimum spend on a grinder for this machine would be more like $500-600 dollars,
I can thoroughly recommend the Eureka grinders,
Try find someone you know, or a coffee shop, who has an Eureka grinder, & get them to grind some of your beans for you on a fine setting, so you can try before spending the money,
Shots coming way too fast can be because of a lot of different things together,
But, most common cause is, grind just not fine enough,
      (Poor grinder)
The difference will blow your mind..

Hey wtw, Your grind is likely too coarse. @marcusherts9345 has good advice. A decent espresso grinder should be able to grind fine enough to choke (no flow) your machine.
