Never engage a bomber formation flying low and slow... never fly your FW190 under 400km/h... never shoot if the enemy did not fill your eyesight... and, finally, don't waste your time vulturing damaged planes who leave the fight unless there are no more enemies fit to fight. Go for the formation leaders. The mission is to put B-17s out of the fight... each one that leave is less 8.000lbs of bombs falling over German's heads. Nice mission, mates... miss my days parading my Spitfire on Warclouds. I need a new flight stick, new headset and free time to go back. Glad to see that the good old 1946 still have a dedicated community
@@Fishyyy unfortunately, "say" is the only thing I do nowadays... like those cheap bar's drunks lol. The reality is that the 110 and the 109 are not very fit to hit those big B-17 formations... no matter how you do it, there is a great chance that you will fail... but doing it on a 190 is a different story... if there are no P-51s covering the bombers and you are patient (to hold the good pace), it's easy to return home with some kills and no bullet holes on your plane. I’ve been waiting since about Y2K for that one. Still fly Microprose TME occasionally. Started out on their first one circa 1991. Actually, started out with Avalon Hill’s “B-17 Queen of the Skies” cardboard and dice, pencils and paper in about ‘87. 😜

Add man No doubt - TME was a good start, but could be done oh so much better. And with today’s hardware and software, it would be EPIC. Multiplayer co-op, PVP, or solo. I think there are licensing issues IIRC. Damn shame. I think it would be a huge success.

In der Simuliation sind programmiertechnisch sicherlich die eine order andere Sache ausgelassen bzw. abstrahiert, aber man erkennt sofort, dass die FW 190 auf Grund ihrer Technik und ihrem Design ein absoluter Bomberkiller war. Die 110er waren mit ihren Raketen eigentlich als Bomberpulk-Aufbrecher gedacht. Spätestens ab 1944, wo die P-47 und P-51 tief in das deutsche Reich eindringen konnten, waren die 110er eigentlich nur noch gefundenes Fressen. Ohne Jagdschutz hatten sie keine Chance gegen die alliierten Jäger.
Soweit ich weiß war bereits seit der Luftschlacht um England das Konzept des schweren Jägers irgendwie Müll, aber die 110er machten was aus sich als Jagdbomber.

Das Problem hatten die Amerikaner auch später mit ihrer P-38. Persönlich bin ich mit dem virt. JG 107 und virt. JG 27 oftmals Begleitschutz geflogen für das virt. ZG 15. Als Jabos mit entsprechendem Jagdschutz war die 110 in Afrika und in Russland richtig gut. Auf den 1941er Russland-Karten im Air Dominion War war die 110 zudem ein sehr guter IL-2 Killer. Wir hatten in der Phase die Bf-109 F-2 und mit der hast Du kaum was gegen die Il-2 ausgerichtet.

@@AreeyaKKC he meant a flight in the sense of groups. The max you can setup for the base version is 4 flights of friendly planes and 4 flights of hostile planes. Every flight consists of 4 planes. So the max you can have is 16 friendly and 16 hostile planes.

Republic should have designed a twinned P-47 for long-range escort, like the twin Mustang from North American that came later. A twinned P-47 should have been possible as soon as the P-47 was in production. It would have sucked at dogfighting but it would have been fast for zoom attacks and heavily gunned. At least enough to make short work of the slower German heavy fighters.
P-47 really only started to get into Europe during 1943 and early to middle 44. By this time the BF110s were obsolete and Germany focused on making faster planes rather than maneuverable, sure the P-47 might have been faster but there were already so many of them by the time the were being sent into combat. Not only that but the Germans would send up 20~ planes against 250+ bombers with an escort of 60-80+ fighters.
In 1943 the Germans were finding that 20mm cannons, fine against fighters, were not adequate against four-engine bombers. There was some experimental use of 30mm cannons but they did not become widespread until 1944. The slaughter of bombers here looks a bit like 30mm work although German planes also get shot down.
There were no Mk 108s or other 30mm used in this video. The problem is the IL-2 damage model, in which B-17s are simply too easy to kill. We are working on the problem with our own damage model mod.
We lost more then that :P The main problem with this is the B-17 damage model in IL-2 1946. B-17s were way harder to kill in reality. We are working on fixing that with our own mod.

It's a pity that rocket tubes can not be jettisoned in this version of the game. It is possible in "stock" 4.13 which is very helpful in interception missions. On the other hand, DT guys who runs "stock" updates has reduced effective radius of Wfr.Gr.21 to laughable 30 m. Yeah, because they could.
Seems Bf-109s are too fragile for this kind of fun :P I seem to remember an air to air bomb being available in SWOTL back in the day, but I have no idea if it really existed,

I skimmed the manual but couldn't find a reference to an aerial bomb, though I recall briefly using them (without much success) when I played the game. mocagh.org/lucasfilm/classictales-luftwaffe-manual.pdf As historical accuracy, google doesn't have much on it. Types 59B and 79 electric aerial burst fuzes of German manufacture had delays of anywhere from 3 to 58 seconds that could have been used for the purpose. Since the Luftwaffe was required to equip many of their fighters for bombing, it's entirely possible.

Mount a drop tank or a bomb, no modification required, as long as it was the "wet" version with fuel lines. As for bomb usage against US bomber formations, there's a book named "I flew for the Führer" by fighter pilot Heinz Knocke in which he among other things recounts the use of delayed fuze bombs against US bomber formations. Gebus i have a number of books written by surviving Luftwaffe pilots and in one of them (I can’t recall which right now) the pilot was talking through a chapter in the book about how they experimented dropping bombs from their fighters above the bombers. They had some success very early on but soon the idea got scrapped as usually it didn’t get any results. Carrying the bomb wasn’t popular with the pilots as a large bomb under a small fighter killed any chance of dogfighting if they met enemy fighters.

B-17's dont perform any manouevers to evade incoming fighters they fly in a straight line in formation to target. None of us can imagine how terrifying that would be to see a 109 110 190 come at you firing guns an cannon and the effect it would have on your plane. I have been in one fort and they are skinny inside no where to hide and there you are 20 000 plus feet in the air being shot at. To be hit and fall out of the sky in one coming apart in flames would be terrifyijg and horrible to see happen to buddies in another plane

Hey fishyyy, I tried running this mission on my PC and performance was just abysmal. It froze for few seconds then ran for Abit them froze. FPS must've been like 3. How do you get yours to run so smooth? I have a GTX1070 Thanks! And keep up these awesome WWII content. I really loved the recent Ar234 coop mission.
BAT is the worst option to play this with. The more stuff a modpack has the worse the performance gets and BAT has the most stuff. That's the reason why we play this in a very lightly modded 4.12.2 Modactivator version.
GOD, I'd love to play with you but my PC can't download VP modpack and or other mods you use due to space restrictions. I actually have modact 5.3 but when I try run it, it doesn't work (comes with BAT) idk if there is a separate mod download for 5.3 or if it comes with BAT, either way it doesn't work for me.
I've never heard of any modact installation being bundled with BAT or anything other than JSGME optional mods. Searching for "modact 5.3" on Google has the official sas1946 release post and a mission4today mirror as the first results, so...

@@DarkenedFantasies The game loads into Modact 5.3 perfectly no problems at all, but on clicking onto anything in the main menu like 'Quick mission builder' the game freezes and requires a restart.
@@EstonianShark 1) Are you sure that you have Modact selected in IL-2 Selector? 2) Have you started the game at least once using Selector (with Modact selected) instead of the normal exe? 3) If all the above is true, go in the Quicks folder and delete the .last.quick file, see if that works.
Bullet/rocket trajectories aren't accurate in replays, they show a little bit higher than they were in the live game. That's why we see B-17s getting fuel leaks and stuff despite the bullets apparently missing.
Yes, they were usually lobbed in to bomber formations to break them out of the "combat box" and to then pick off individual planes. FW-190's would carry them too. They were notoriously inaccurate and unreliable.
@@johnbertrand7185 being a 210 mm mortar shell adapted from the artilleries 21cm Nebelwerfer 42(28.6 kg of explosive filler), they didn't need to be accurate. These "rockets" didn't rely on explosive effect to do damage... everything within ca. 60 meters of the explosion would be shredded by the shrapnel thrown out from the exploding shell.
Unfortunately that died out around 2010-2012, simplistic flights sims came out and il2 began working on Great Battles (BoS, BoM, BoK, FC and TC) there are videos on TH-cam of people playing on official multiplayer servers from like 10~ years ago still floating around. Shame I was too young for flight sims but old enough for Minecraft.
It's a complex thing. Even if I tell people NOT to attack from the rear, they will still do it. The 110's high altitude flight charachteristics aren't great to begin with and overtaking with one - that has rocket launchers and cannons - takes ages. The formations in that old video are not very tight, once you slightly damage a b-17 and it falls back a bit, it's basically outside of the safety of the formation. At that point, a 110 with its cannons can very well go into a rear attack, because in that situation it is superior. It's kind off the brood force approach. Hope this clarifies things :)

attacking those combat boxes from the rear is too dicey. high head on and front quarter attacks take more time to set up,but are much safer.
Ype, exactly. If I cant catch them Headon or having the Speed to go infront and turn into a Headon - I do not engage a Box!

Thank you! The vanilla game has a setting called "HighGore", if you enable it, some aircraft will display blood, when crewmen get killed.

I've never heard of any modact installation being bundled with BAT or anything other than JSGME optional mods. Searching for "modact 5.3" on Google has the official sas1946 release post and a mission4today mirror as the first results, so...

This lists what mods are used with il2 selctor but I actually don't have it it's just an option. Under that you can see my BAT mods but when I first got it I thought that the modact was glitched for me or something. Either way I don't have space for another il2 mod anyway atm :p
@@EstonianShark Oh, yeah, I have those listed as well, but that's correct; it doesn't mean the BAT mod is included/installed.
As for it not working, I don't know. What percent does the game crash at? Or does it simply not run at all?
@@DarkenedFantasies The game loads into Modact 5.3 perfectly no problems at all, but on clicking onto anything in the main menu like 'Quick mission builder' the game freezes and requires a restart.
@@EstonianShark 1) Are you sure that you have Modact selected in IL-2 Selector?
2) Have you started the game at least once using Selector (with Modact selected) instead of the normal exe?
3) If all the above is true, go in the Quicks folder and delete the .last.quick file, see if that works.

Nice video, but aren't you leading too much? I see a lot of rounds missing high and forward...
Bullet/rocket trajectories aren't accurate in replays, they show a little bit higher than they were in the live game. That's why we see B-17s getting fuel leaks and stuff despite the bullets apparently missing.

Wasn't the sense of the heavy rockets to stay out of range of the defensive machine guns?
Yes, they were usually lobbed in to bomber formations to break them out of the "combat box" and to then pick off individual planes. FW-190's would carry them too. They were notoriously inaccurate and unreliable.
@@johnbertrand7185 being a 210 mm mortar shell adapted from the artilleries 21cm Nebelwerfer 42(28.6 kg of explosive filler), they didn't need to be accurate. These "rockets" didn't rely on explosive effect to do damage... everything within ca. 60 meters of the explosion would be shredded by the shrapnel thrown out from the exploding shell.

Unfortunately that died out around 2010-2012, simplistic flights sims came out and il2 began working on Great Battles (BoS, BoM, BoK, FC and TC) there are videos on TH-cam of people playing on official multiplayer servers from like 10~ years ago still floating around. Shame I was too young for flight sims but old enough for Minecraft.

Head-on or slashing attacks from the side give the least amount of % to get shot by a .50.
So, you watched the first attacks in the 110s? Did you watch the rest where we do head ons and slashing attacks etc?

Yea - and most of your vids you do the kind of attack we're talking about - which is why I was surprised.
It's a complex thing.
Even if I tell people NOT to attack from the rear, they will still do it. The 110's high altitude flight charachteristics aren't great to begin with and overtaking with one - that has rocket launchers and cannons - takes ages. The formations in that old video are not very tight, once you slightly damage a b-17 and it falls back a bit, it's basically outside of the safety of the formation. At that point, a 110 with its cannons can very well go into a rear attack, because in that situation it is superior. It's kind off the brood force approach.
