    I learned alot about the Ju87 watching this. I like the evasive maneuver of mirroring the turns of the attacking fighter allowing the stinger to get some shots at the attacking fighter at 6 o'clock. Pretty cool.

    The Mediterranean theater during ww2 was great showcase for the ju 87 stuka because there was limited allied fighter oppostion and the stuka could take advantage of the dive bomber role it was designed for, stukas attacked and sunk many British ships here, way more than at Dunkirk in France during 1940, stukas also assisted bombing the islands of Crete and Malta, this was probably the stukas finest hour during ww2 with many successful bombing attacks

      I imagine the Stukas on a normal mission would have had fighters assigned to provide top cover. Attack the Stukas and a 109 would be on your tail. Tactic for a Stuka was to turn a tight circle at near ground level that no fighter could follow. The rear gunner then could attack the fighter. When this was a twin MG81Z there could be 2700 rounds coming back out.

      German Bombers had terrible defenses, so an approach from behind is not as suicidal as against allied bombers.
      What puzzles me is:
      He 111 had only light machine guns for defense, as had Ju 87. How is the pilot snipes where so easy? Did the allied fighters have no armoured windscreen?

    That has to be a very terrifying sight seeing four Stukas in a diamond formation diving down knowing that at least one set of bombs is aimed at your ship, made all the more terrifying with those Jericho Sirens wailing. How many ships were sunk by them alone?

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Actually, the Stukas should not have been using the sirens. All they do is warn the ship below to start evasive maneuvers. Also, the siren imposes drag, and makes the Stuka even slower.

      Jo, seit 4.11 wird die Abwurfhöhe und Geschwindigkeit bei Torpedos berücksichtigt. Diese LT F5W Torpedos sind relativ späte Modelle und sollen bei 300 km/h in 100 Metern Höhe abgeworfen werden. Die älteren LT F5b z.B. müssen aus 40 Metern Höhe, bei 250 km/h abgeworfen werden. Wenn man das versaut kommt eine Nachricht: "Torpedo falsch eingetaucht" und die gehen dann auch kaputt.

    Would one of those bomb blasts 5-10m away do any harm to the ship? Would the hull get some cracks from bomb explosions that close to a ship?

    • @WilliamJones-Halibut-vq1fs
      @WilliamJones-Halibut-vq1fs 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      The bombs would have a direct impact fuse with a short delay and a long delay of a few seconds for water impacts. In the “turnip planting method” used typically by Ju 88 or Me 109 the Bomb was aimed ahead of the waterline. The time delay was about 5.3 seconds and would ensure the bomb sank about 60ft and detonated directly under the ship. This would often break the ship in two if not burst plates so much the ship sank. With the Stuvi 5B bombsight and the BZA Computer the Pilot got a reticle moving as a continuous impact point. A good crew could enter a dive at 8000ft, pullout by 5000ft at 400mph and get consistently within a few meters of target. Fighters had a second adjustable reticle on the revi. You aimed at the ship, then pulled up till the second pre adjusted reticle crossed and then released the bomb. The planed attack profile had to be calculated from tables and entered into the sight. German fighters were supposed to get the TSA2D toss bombing sight. You dived onto the target lined up with the gunsight. The sight had data from airspeed, cross wind, altimeter, variometer and FuG 101a radar altimeter if available and an pull-up accelerometer. When you pulled up the bombsight released the bomb in the correct arc. Was used on some KG7 and KG51 Me 262A2 bomber jets. This sight was also meant to be used for the BT series bombs eg BT400, BT1000 that tunneled the water and detonated by a twin coil metal detector proximity fuse.

      It takes 20+ years to "grow" a pilot. While your analysis is true in cold numbers, it's the same mistake the Japanese made where they sacrificed many SKILLED pilots on such short term thinking, leading to a shortage of SKILLED pilots later in the war.
      When those unskilled pilots of Japan were later employed in the aircraft they were ineffective (got lost, got shot down, missed targets) and mission accomplishment was severely degraded.
      I hope you take my point.

      @@timonsolus
      That's an interesting philosophical point.
      Meanwhile - when nations are at war, you want to not lose your experienced war fighters. It takes a LONG time to train a pilot - the US program is almost 3 years before the raw recruit is a basic qualified pilot.

    • @timonsolus
      @timonsolus 3 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@StevenMRA : Well, to the Japanese in WW2, honour was more important than victory, and fighting was more important than winning.
      With that mindset, taking an experienced pilot away from his unit and away from the fighting, denying him future glory, was considered dishonourable, so it wasn’t done without a good medical reason.
      The Japanese did send experienced pilots home to train new replacements - but usually after they had been seriously wounded, or become ill enough to require a long break from the front. Or, more rarely, after they had been promoted, and there wasn’t a space for them in their current unit at their new rank.

    Is this based on any particular historical convoy? Where are all the carrier fighters? You have Seafires, but no Fulmars, Sea Hurricanes (the Hurricanes in this video appear to be regular ones without arresting gear), or Martlets. The flak also seems unusually light considering the presence of a number of destroyers, cruisers and at least one battleship protecting the convoy.

    • @Fishyyy
      @Fishyyy  6 ปีที่แล้ว

      No it isn't, I simply put a bunch of ships. I think it does not really matter if I use Beaufighters, Seafires and Hurricanes or Fulmars and Sea Hurricanes. The Flak is light because of two reasons: A lot of it isn't displayed in replays and it's lighter in HSFX anyway. As always in IL-2, you can either have a lot of different ship types with HSFX OR impressive AA fire. Also, the game sucks at displaying AA fire, it quickly degrades the FPS.

      @@aurorathearcticwolf4243 The MG-81 rate of fire was 1400-1600 rounds per minute, so it would be 2800-3200 rpm for this double mount. That's a lot of firepower (even if the projectiles are only rifle-calibre). Much better to avoid the effects of such a weapon by ducking under the tail of a Stuka to fire up into its unprotected underside.
