That teal color you’ve mixed is wonderful! There is absolutely nothing lost by omitting white in this portrait. I have to admit that I was a little concerned when you smudged paint with your fingers, considering that lead can be absorbed through the skin and is accumulated is the body. Maybe use a nitrile glove when using lead pigments? (I know, I know...you’re an adult and I’m being a mom). I love this wind-blown portrait.

Oh Linda... don't remind me of that time, about 18 yrs ago where I decided to sand a lead primed canvas and my face was covered in white dust... Ignorance is stupidly daring. Thankfully, I've become more careful about things now, but using gloves is almost impossible for me. I just can't get a good feel for what I'm doing with them. Hopefully I will have plenty of years ahead of me where I can keep smudging paint. But I genuinely thank you for your concern :)

You said before that liquid and transparent paints are not your comfort zone. I am wondering if you'll use the white background of the paper in any way to solve the lack of white paint this week. Or will you keep thinking your brush strokes only as opaque ones?

@@OurPaintedLives Lol, not spying, I swear :D I just have the same struggle when it comes to transparent paints. The amplitude of choices overwhelm me. I mean, each brush stroke can have both opaque and transparent consequences. I think that it is in these situations that the amount of practice and intuition (talent/gift?) becomes handy. When something ends up looking good I honestely don't know if it was a lucky accident or if I was in control without knowing it. I bet you feel that too sometimes.

¿alguna vez has probado pintar sobre papel pergamino de buen gramaje?, lo uso mucho y al ser un papel sintético no absorbe la pintura y resbala muy bien, podrías darle la oportunidad.

I make my own Lead Tin Yellow, using Orange Lead (plumbus lead), and Stannic Tin, baked in a refractory oven in a microwave (I do not use the unit for anything else) The stuff is great. Many masters used on in their palette including Rembrandt and Bosch. Its real power is chemical, not colour. As you can easily mix that off yellow tone a number of ways.

wow. Martin have you ever document that process? Do you make another oil colours?

@@BICICLETASFORTUNA I found that making other colours can be dangerous, and not always good money for your time. Best bang for your buck is making Lead white honestly. Basically 'rusting' lead metal (such as fishing weights) using CO2 and vinegar. The CO2 can be obtained through baking yeast. Melt the lead shot in a cheap small skillet, then drip the metal over aluminum foil to create 'corn flake splatters'. Collect into glass containers, do not pack; airflow is important. Place the glass into a tub, with room enough for a mug (yeast generator lol). flood the bottom with vinegar. Close the tub lid and drill a hole for air. Leave near warm area. Replace the yeast every week or so. Either way the thing will rust into lead flake white, just faster with yeast booster. Use vinegar to wash a tub for lead mud, separating the solids back into the glass. Be aware that lead white is very sticky, so wear disposable gloves. No need to dry it, as the lead suspended in a bit of vinegar will stay motile, so keep it in a jar. When you want to make paint, use a palette knife to stage some on glass, then add oil. This magical stuff will absorb the oil, repelling the water. Be aware that lead is only toxic if you eat it, or get it into your bloodstream somehow. It does not float in air, it cannot get through your skin. As a pigment it is very faint, which is the point. Great for making mists, building highlights, Arial Perspectives, and doping other colour to make them turn to slight grays, and most importantly: it is the best archival material out there: add it to paint and it will make that colour archival. Use it as an underpainting material, and it will dry other paint through secondary action. Peace.

If you heat the lead white powder, you will get lead orange (plumbus lead). An interesting point, not to re-melt any lead cornflake chips in the vinegar bath. I found that a relaxed trip to your local pottery supply will get your paws on lots of different colour powders, used for glazing and bisque effects, which you can experiment with also. Have fun.

One thing I've been meaning to ask you Daniel : do you just so your paper or feel it somehow? I thought painting oil on paper caused the paper too deteriorate over time.
