Bonsaify | Blue Atlas Cedar Propagation: Grafts, Air Layers, or Cuttings?

  • Blue Atlas Cedar make gorgeous bonsai...but they have one key trait that can make them problematic to work with: they lack an ability to reliably back bud on old growth. Thus to propagate high quality bonsai, operations such as approach grafts, air layers, or cuttings are needed. Eric shares the history of work he's done to establish a Blue Atlas Cedar bonsai, as well as attempts he's made with younger stock and even cuttings.
    00:00:52 Eric begins by explaining the history of an established tree he began constructing in 2006. Over the years, the two successful approach grafts he applied have experienced very different levels of vigor, and the growth is uneven.
    00:01:46 Eric makes a crazy !?! suggestion.
    00:02:38 Rough plan to transition to rebuilding the crown using the second graft.
    00:03:20 "Disconcerting" bend of branch.
    00:03:51 Transition plans include removing the tree from its bonsai pot.
    00:04:20 Eric shows another, younger tree that was successfully approach grafted onto a deodar (Himalayan) cedar base.
    00:05:22 This tree also looks to have a successful air layer, seen in close-up.
    00:06:30 Eric is excited that he has a proof of concept that air layering can work.
    00:07:50 Propagation by cuttings is a third option (grafting and air layering being the first two). Eric reviews the results of a tray of cuttings, and shows the new growth and budding.
    00:09:21 Back to the older bonsai - to get some tips running, Eric completes thinning and clean-up work.
    If you want to learn more about the history of this tree, read this blog post, "Blue Atlas Cedar Saga": www.bonsaify.c.... What experiences have you had propagating this species? Have you had success grafting, air layering, or cutting? Let us know in the comments below! Thank you for watching; please like this video and subscribe to our channel.

    I have a garden blue ceder and this spring I took off a cone with a view to getting some seed and found inside some of the seeds had sprouted,which is probably due to the very wet weather we have had this winter.Never seen this happen before and now have some growing !

    In order to succeed in propagating cedars you need young branches, bottom heat and a cover of plastic to keep 100% humidity. It also help in using rooting hormones too, then the strength for woody cuttings. Otherwise you have to show a half a ton of seeds and choose from the resulting seedlings the bluest ones.

      Thanks for the tips, It sounds like you've had some experience with it! I didn't use bottom heat this time, but I use an electronic leaf mister and rooting hormone in a greenhouse that's 55-85F (heated to maintain the minimum and auto-vented at the top end.) Once I have a better set of trees to use for the cuttings I'll be doing a larger batch!

    I always wanted an Atlas Cedar as Bonsai, but the cuttings so far haven't been successful and seed cones are mostly so high I can't reach. I only have that one cedar in my nearby park, so I think airlayering would be difficult to do, but I hope I can find some viable seeds or one cuttung might works someday. Good video!

    I ran across a guy on TH-cam, Nillies Bonsai, who has had some success air layering these. He said that from the time he did the air layering cut until he removed the layer was about 3 years. I think his success rate was about 50%. He uses the standard technique with sphagnum moss wrapped in plastic over the cut.

    I’ve wanted one for a few years now. I haven’t found one with a decent trunk, or a thin enough trunk to add movement too. I had no idea the could be air layered or grown from cuttings. I’m definitely buying the next one I find

    • @yoteslaya7296
      @yoteslaya7296 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      They can't be air layered. 99% of all cedars you see for sale are grafted. Not sure why this guy is saying otherwise but I've had bonsai cedar for years and you only get seeds or grafted stock. Cuttings are also extremely difficult to root.

    • @danielfonseca5007

      My cuttings are doing ok , pencil thick took during autumn and put inside a plastic greenhouse, not sure if they have rooted but the colour or texture is as vibrant as when I took them. Keep up the water!

      @yoteslaya7296 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@danielfonseca5007 cedar cuttings take a minimum of 1 year to root. Just because they retain their color is a poor indication of health. Ive seen juniper cuttings look great for 6 months but rotten in the soil

    Atlas Cedars are very difficult imo. They really hate root work and repottings and if you overwater them they develop root rot issues. I still love them though.

      The layer was started last summer (so about 1 year.)

  • @danielfonseca5007
    @danielfonseca5007 ปีที่แล้ว

    If you created a clump of those small cuttings, would that resolve the one root issue? Would it work? Just asking, have never done it but really curious about what to do next with my cuttings if they survive this winter and actually root. Great vids Eric, super informative as always.

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      I'm guessing no - I don't think this species would fuse well.
      The way to resolve the 1 root issue is to work with the roots more over time. I haven't actually seen the roots, but once the trees get going you should be able to get good nebari going even starting with a cutting with just one root.

  • @Mountainviewbonsai
    @Mountainviewbonsai ปีที่แล้ว

    Is this a current video with work being done during the summer? Alot of people make bonsai videos but don't tell what season or month they're doing it in.

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      Lol. I debated adding the seasonal patch I created but elected not to. That's because the work shown - which isn't a lot, was done in summer. However the cuttings and air layers were started about 1 year ago, so.... Yes. Generally speaking, the original release date of our videos is the season in which they were created.

  • @maryoverton7245
    @maryoverton7245 ปีที่แล้ว

    silly thought. How about reducing the back branch to slow it down and maybe the top might take off more. Seems a shame to cut off over 10 years of growth.

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's basically the strategy that I've been using for the past few years. Cut back the lower graft hard, thin it and leave the top one alone. But no dice. The shoots you see in the video are 1 year of growth on the bottom, while in 3 years the top has only grown 1" on a couple branches and less on most.

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      Sorry to say I have no idea. The genetics of atlas cedars are surprisingly diverse. You might try purchasing seed? Although TBH, I've been having problems with cedar seeds lately.

  • @emy1111
    @emy1111 ปีที่แล้ว

    Hi Eric, thats really interesting having my self been doing allot of approach graft recently Im interested to see how they behave over time. you didn't mention it but are you planning to airlayer the top of the larger cedar? this might serve to reinvigorate it too... would be a nice shohin.

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว

      The layer is a possibility. At the moment I've put it at the farm in a large container (slip potted) so that it gains vigor. It's warmer and sunnier out there than at my house. Once it's growing a bit more quickly I' think I would have faster success with layering....or perhaps the problem will go away by itself. 🤞

    • @emy1111
      @emy1111 ปีที่แล้ว

      @@Bonsaify yeah i don’t know what i was thinking there, it’s best to have a vigorous tree before you layer and if the vigour picks up you prob won’t want to. all the best with it. 🤞

  • @blueridgebonsai9155
    @blueridgebonsai9155 ปีที่แล้ว

    Eric, were all your graft stock from the same genetic source? Could the more vigorous branch be from a different genetic strain and thus the different growth characteristics?

    • @Bonsaify
      @Bonsaify  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Good point, but no, I grafted the tree back onto itself to avoid such problems. In retrospect I would love to have had a stock of Blue Atlas Cedars I could use for approach grafts since that would have saved me two years of growing long branches to bend around for the grafts.
