No blood was allowed in the race, this why the Jade Emperor decided to raise the rat from the dead and disqualify the cat. With all this treachery, the Jade Emperor gave the choice to the last one arriviring, the slow, humble Pig. The Pig decided of the order, and placed himself last, humbly. But the story is much more complicated than even these few lines, the river was just the last part...
