Wow, I grew up with the Chinese version of the story and never knew there's a Japanese version! For those who are interested, here are some of the differences between this version and the Chinese version:
1. In the Chinese version, it's the Jade Emperor who organized the race.
2. In the Chinese version, it's a river-crossing race.
3. In the Chinese version, the cat is in the race. Since both him and the rat could not swim, they ask the bull to carry them over. Then the rat pushed the cat off the bull's back into the river.
4. In the Chinese version, when the cat finally emerges from the river, the race is already over and all of the animals laugh at him. That's the end of the cat's and the rat's friendship and why cats chase rats.

Like the cat, I would be mad, too, if something big like the chance of becoming king of an entire year happened and you had to be one of first 12 people, or in this case, animals, to arrive somewhere and then someone else lied to you about when you had to show up just so that they could help ensure that they themselves got a chance of being king for a year themselves!
