Stitching Pony for Leather Working: How I Made One

  • Last week I made a stitching pony for leather working projects. In a few weeks I will be making a leather belt. Hence I need this stitching pony. This DIY project is made out of ash wood. It allows me to saddle stitch leather. Making it took me almost a full week in the evenings after work, but I learned some new skills in the process. For instance the wooden knob that I am really proud of. It is made entirely using the drill press.
    My name is Tony. I am a guy from the Netherlands who speaks bad English with an even worse Dutch accent. I like to try out new hobbies and create stuff. The things I like to do are very random so I try to try out as many hobbies and crafts as possible and take you with me on that journey by making these video's.

    Hey Tony! It turned out great! For some reason, I just saw that you tagged my blog post as inspiration for yours. I see that you corrected one of the things I should have...putting the nut for the bolt on the outside. The epoxy in mine has failed, so I'm probably going to put a threaded insert in there and it'll be functional again.

      Hi Bruce, Thank you for watching my video, I really appreciate it. Especially the knob and shim idea from your video were very inspirational. Whenever I need a knob know, I know how to make one. I don't have a lot of woodworking experience (or tools for that matter), but this definitely was a fun project and the stitching pony itself works fantastic. Thanks again! Cheers!

    Wonderful tutorial, great job. Very neat and functional. Hope your leather projects go well for you. I've been a leather smith for many years and it's always nice to see young folks take an interest in the craft. Good on ya and blessings to you and yours. And by the way the knob was genius.🤠

      Hi Tom, thanks for the nice words. I find leather working to be really rewarding. This week, I am working on my first pair of shoes, that will be my next video... Credit for the knob idea has to go to Bruce A. Ulrich. I got the idea from on of his videos. Cheers, Tony!

    I made three sizes of stitching pony, one for clamping to table, one for clamping to seat/bench. and one from the floor, all different lengths to accommodate for different locations, and uses. I used a different design but very similar with bolt and wing nut to clamp the body and springs to pull the two verticals together, hinged at the bottom one side. I also have the angled jaws with leather, You did a great job on that very impressed. So i have subscribed also. All the best from UK, stay safe and thanks for this video i enjoyed watching real craftsmanship at work.

      Hi Rob, thanks for watching and subscribing. It seems nice to me to have different style stitching ponies to choose from. With this one I have I always have to stitch standing up or sitting on the base which isn't super comfortable 😂 maybe I can make a smaller clampable one too! Thanks for the tips. And thanks again for watching and subscribing - it is difficult to get a lot of subscribers since I don't focus on one topic on this channel - I just do whatever seems fun to me and then hope people will enjoy that too. Cheers from the Netherlands!

    Only thing I'd do different is put a spring between the jaws on the adjusting bolt to help hold jaws apart until you tighten it down

    • @TonyNeedsHobbies
      @TonyNeedsHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      That's a smart suggestion. It's still possible to do that as an upgrade, if I can find a properly sized spring. Thanks and happy holidays!

    Красиво. Я бы хотел такой ;-) Но сложно. Я слишком ленив, поэтому сделал сильно проще ;-) Без клея, без мебельной петли, без краски. Вместо ручки рым-гайка. И я поставил пружину на поперечный винт между боковинами. Из инструмента понадобились дрель и ножовка. Грубо и не слишком красиво, но успешно работает уже 4 года ;)

      Thanks Alfredo! Unfortunately I don't have a full plan available for it, but the dimensions don't really matter as long as you can clamp leather in it and clamp the stitching pony between your legs or on a working surface. In my case, the ash wood I used was 22mm (7/8'') thick and 75mm (3'') wide. The base is 40cm (16'') long and the clamp halves are 40cm (16'') tall (all approximate). Then if you just follow my video, you should be good to go! Have fun making one!
      Greetings, Tony

      Hi Flywelder, I had mine 3D printed in laser sintered steel from Shapeways if I remember correctly. I heat it with a torch but not too hot since it might disintegrate. Hope this helps a bit 😊 otherwise, let me know! Cheers!

    Dat ziet er goed uit! Het verbaast me een beetje dat je geen tafelzaagmachine hebt. Dat werkt een stuk gemakkelijker dan met de handzaag. Ik ben nieuw met leerbewerking en bezig met een crossdraw holster voor mijn Colt SAA te maken. Deze Stitching Pony is een goed model dat mij zeker het werk lichter kan maken. Aan de slag dus…. Groet uit 🇦🇹 Paul

      Bedankt, Paul! Ik zou willen dat ik de ruimte had voor een tafelzaagmachine, dan zou er zeker een komen. Veel succes met de holster! Ga je hem nat modelleren? De stichting pony gaat zeker behulpzaam zijn bij het stikken! Heel veel succes!
      Groetjes, Tony

      @@TonyNeedsHobbies ja Tony, die dingen nemen wel wat plaats in beslag… Ik ga het holster nat modelleren. Pasvorm is dan beter en zal de revolver dan minder snel beschadigd raken. Ben benieuwd hoe dat gaat, want de opbouw is uit 2 lagen en 6,5 mm dikte……. Groet uit Austria

      Oeh dat is wel dik leer. Heel veel succes ermee, ook met het stikken. Het dikste leer dat ik gebruik is 3.5mm en dat werkt heel fijn. Groeten uit Nederland 😉

      Hallo Milush, bedankt voor je grote compliment. Helaas heb ik geen tijd om opdrachten aan te nemen. Heb ook een full time baan en probeer in mijn vrije tijd zoveel mogelijk afwisselende dingen te doen. Maar... Het is niet moeilijk om zelf te maken zoals je in de video kan zien. Als ik jou was zou ik er voor gaan en er zelf een proberen te maken. Ik weet zeker dat je tot een bruikbaar resultaat kan komen! Succes!

    Hi Tony, Great project. What are the dimensions of your stock you started with?

    • @TonyNeedsHobbies
      @TonyNeedsHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Thanks Gregg! It was a piece of I believe 22mm (7/8'') thick ash. I cut it into a 75mm (3'') wide board and made the pony out of that. Where I needed the wood to be thicker I just glued multiple pieces together Forgive me if the measurements don't exactly match what I mention in the video, it might be slightly different. Are you going to make one yourself? Enjoy it!
      Cheers, Tony

    • @TonyNeedsHobbies
      @TonyNeedsHobbies  ปีที่แล้ว

      Good for you! From my experience dimensions don't really matter that much, as long as the clamp is able to tightly hold your workpiece and you're able to clamp the pony between your legs or onto a surface. I would be happy to hear from me once you gave it a go! Good luck!

    Good job but I gotta tell you, watching you cut things and putting your hands in the path of anything sharp is scary. Learn to use them clamps! Clamp your work down to drill, cut, machine, chisel it anything else sharp. It'll save you some stitches and down time.

      @TonyNeedsHobbies  3 ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Ford Fan, that's some good advice. Thank you! I certainly do care about safety and wear my PPE and all, but I do recognize that I haven't thought enough about what I put my hands in front of so your comment is very much appreciated. In my upcoming video I am chiselling a hex nut hole again in the same way but in the ones to be recorded, I will put your advice regarding sharp tools in practice. And thanks for complimenting on the work 🙂
