Unlike Gradius 3, slowdown isn't around to help through the Moai stage in Gradius IV, so the rings will quickly overtake you if you aren't powered up enough(hell of a challenge too). I find myself hugging the right side of the screen a lot, gets claustrophobic with all those rings coming at you from different directions at once. Gradius IV has been called the black sheep of the series, to me it is a great black sheep if it is, quite an enjoyable game. Maybe not up to the caliber of Gaiden, but I'll be damned if this game didn't quickly grow on me when I first tried it. It was the one Gradius that I always wanted to play besides Gaiden, played it just prior to Gaiden, own copies of Gradius 3/4 for PS2 (along with Collection on PSP, which also has Gaiden), as well as a legit copy of Gaiden on the PS1. Also love this games speed stage, short, sweet, and to the point, a fast ride indeed, but make sure you always have enough speed ups, and always know the best route, or make sure you know how to maneuver through the paths as the stage won't take long to speed you through it.
It honestly felt like a bad idea playing this game directly after playing in my opinion, the best game in the series (Gaiden). Not that I'm saying 4 is bad, but it feels like a slight drop in quality.
Blahblahblah28504 I often found myself playing both, sometimes 4 after, sometimes before Gaiden, never really felt bad at all. If anything 4 has a better challenge than Gaiden has, though Gaiden is the better game. METAL1ON Yeah, the Moai in this game are quite aggressive.
Holy crap, you died! That's always something I like to see on an LP run, it means the LPer either messed up but accepted it as just another challenge to overcome, or they felt things were too easy and wanted to make it harder.
+QueenReign I like when LP players lose a life or mess up at some point, because this makes them seem human and not like flawless robots who do everything perfect, lol.
If you die in Gradius, it isn't always on purpose, sometimes it is to drop the games difficulty rank. But it has to be done at the right checkpoints, doing so at the wrong checkpoints leaves the player vulnerable to death after death due to checkpoints placing you where there is a swarm of enemies, and your ship is too underpowered to overcome them.
Also, good effort on loop 2, I think my eyes glazed over just watching it. If it helps, at least the Game Over music is rather cute sounding (it's my favorite Game Over music in the series...of course, I tend to hear it a lot... >_>).
Nice play! I like the subtitles at the beginning in the Konami Gradius font, nice touch. Do you find the 'Hardest' difficulty much harder than the default?
Dude you get chewed up on this, I always got my butt kicked playing on normal due to the way the adaptive difficulty worked, but you fight really well here. I had more trouble with this than Gradius 3 in the arcades, but that might have more to do with me not liking IV as much as the other games. (Gamestone Gogs)
Seahawk0027 You should try clearing Dodonpachi Dai-ou-jou (Not black label) and or battle garegga, those are brutal games. Good job clearing Gradius IV
***** It's funny, the arcade Gradius 3 makes Battletoads look fair, while the SNES version is probably one of the best games for a newcomer to get into the series.
Nah. He's just saying that to taunt you and is probably his way of saying that the Bacterians will keep coming back no matter how many times they were defeated. I kinda prefer him, Bacterion, and Venom to stay dead at this point tbh.
Love the gradius games since I was a child, but the way the stages are set always confused me. There is a ground portion below and above the ship and with space in the backround lateral to the ship…so how does that work exactly? Lol it makes for great game play though no doubt
Great Run! I had to give this game up for my health, and viewing this replay I'm kinda glad I did. For some reason, Gradius IV induced the most game rage I've ever experienced. Well done, and to be honest, normal skill level would have been enough to impress me:)).
I would post a Radiant Silvergun full clear but the HDMI input on my video capture device recently short circuited and burnt out, so I can't record it. Salamander/Life force/Salamander 2 might happen if I feel like digging out the PS2 sometime. I graduated college last May and am trying to find a job since then, which is why I've slowed down on the uploads.
One, why don't you make videos for salamander2 and gradius galaxies? Two, how do make your gradius playthroughs have a bit more captions? Three, I only subcribed because of your gradius playthroughs. And four, I love gradius!
1. I have been busy the past few months so I've had no time. Salamander 2 is also hard, need to actually beat the game first. I don't have Gradius Galaxies but I hope I can get a copy someday.2. That is just video editing after the run is recorded.3. Thanks :).4. I love Gradius too! Too bad there will probably not be a new game...
You have to be in a pretty decent position for that safe spot to work with the cannons active. I believe he was too low and wasn't able to destroy the cannon quickly enough that time.
At critical health the center lasers will fire very rapidly, creating a dangerous situation at bad angles (see 5:30 of Gradius IV #5 - Late Game Revival Play, More Failure). I was trying to avoid this until I got a good attack angle, unfortunately the missiles forced me into a bad evasion and I was destroyed.
The odd one of the series, IMO. They seemed to still be experimenting with the PSX's capabilities at the time, and everything looks a little wonky. A good game, nevertheless.
Should be using the REDUCE shield in Gradius 3 anyhow. Sure it doesnt take as many hits as the other shields, but you can avoid many more hits as well.
+Vludi LoL nope, unleast you have a very descent computer, I prefer playing the game on a PS2 if you are not a original game player, then is no problem burning it.

Yay!!! This run got me inspired to do another try to the game (on my PSP of course). Great gameplay.
This was a very nice run-through, never played this one but I loved 3 and 5

Why every gradius game is so hard but the last level boss is so easy lol
Because it is hell to get to them. The last stages in Gradius games tend to throw everything imaginable at you, kitchen sink included.

I can’t get past stage 3 even easiest difficulty. Stage 3 is kinda bs since I can no death 1-2 every time. Lowering the rank for stage 3 isn’t helping
What's going on at the Rolling Core boss? Intentional suicide to rack up score?
