    I had the rear passenger side gas smell on my wagon recently. Took it smile auto in North York (Greg there knows these cars well) and we looked at both fuel sender units with no leak. Smell seemed to be coming from somewhere in the passenger rear wheel well where the all the tubes and hoses go to the tank. We narrowed it down to the charcoal cannister and replaced foam filter inside it which was disintegrated.

    I enjoyed your video. Looks like you've done a lot of research on this car. I'm a casual viewer, since I have a 2001 E320 wagon so I'm always curious about next generation cars. I would have enjoyed knowing if the issues/problems you mentioned including ones that you anticipate having specific to the E55 or all of the wagons of that era.

    I got stranded my E55 wagon due to the gear selector Hall effect sensor. You may want to replace that with a rebuilt one ahead of time. It just doesn't let the transmission know what selection it is in so you are limited to 3rd gear.
    Other than that it's been across the US there and back fine. Rear main seal leaks, and my updated seat pneumatic pump doesn't seem to want to trigger for lumbar support (minor but I want that). Keep up the E55 content, it helps us all ;).

    You can very easily check if the fuel smell is coming from the sender. Just pull out the rear seat (super easy) and remove the cover under the driver-side seat. If you get intermittent leaking you’ll see the residue. Mine seeps very slightly and I’m planning to replace it but in the meantime I just don’t fill to max. Other than that my ‘05 sedan has been awesome. These are such cool cars.

    I've had mine for a couple of years and done most of the things on your list. In its lifetime my wagon has had some of the bits (SBC & Airmatic struts and Pump) done more than once. I have every receipt since 2008 and its had £34k worth of parts. Averaging 2k a year with one year at £7k. (2 gearbox rebuilds it didn't need, mouse ate TCU loom)
    I've had W210 E55, S211 55 and a 221 65. All three were extremely expensive to maintain and run, as predicted before purchase.
    One thing I would reiterate, 211s eat suspension parts and bushings, faster if your geo is out.
    Great vid Jakob.

  • @adogmcdizzle
    @adogmcdizzle 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +5

    Other common issues: Rear outer spring arm heim joints (You can replace just the joint instead of the whole arm, which would otherwise cost £1100 in parts), frontmost rear subframe bushes (these are also fluid filled - requires dropping the subframe), harmonic balancer separating (Expensive part, but not much in labour, probably £1000 to do)
    Mine has had the supercharger fluid done. Make sure to use the correct diff oil, its NOT an LSD, so its the 75W85 fluid you need. Conductor plate has been done on mine. I'm on the original SBC @125,000 miles (no warranty here in UK). Mine has had the fuel sending unit done, worth changing fuel filter at the same time as the interval is 15years. My engine has the oil pump chain rattle at a warm idle - likely not an issue other than the annoying noise. Its on its second set of timing cover gaskets (its actually RTV) and they are leaking anyway... Make sure to change those engine mounts as leaving them will fatigue the joints on the exhaust and cause that to fail too.
    Its worth mentioning that although this is a mid-2000's Mercedes with 500bhp, most of these common issues would impact a diesel airmatic model too, and aren't specific to the AMG models, and frankly if I'm going to spend money maintaining a car, I would much rather it WAS an AMG; as its a much more interesting vehicle which I have less issue putting some money into to keep tip top. That being said, I do all my own work where I can; so costs aren't what someone visiting a garage would incur, which might make the car unviable for a more typical owner.
    All in all, these are pretty undervalued by the market, and much cheaper to own an run than their contemporaries the RS6 and M5 - Front disks from my dealer were just £60 each, there is good aftermarket support with most things still being available - thanks to the diesel models being popular taxis no doubt . The character of the engine and gearbox suits a daily driver which you mostly use to smoke around in, its a lazy effortless torquey power delivery, which lends itself to reliability being a reliatively understressed engine. You will enjoy more of it more of the time without the gearbox woes of its competition, or the highly stressed nature of the M5 specifically.
    I too use mine as a daily and for carrying the family about in, we've been on holiday in it and utilise the rear facing third row for my eldest child when we need to carry a few more adults. I'm going to run and maintain it for as long as I can. Hoping for at least a decade. 🙂
    Thanks for the E55 content, all the best.

    Jakub, thanks for keeping this car on the road. I'm a firm believer in purchasing preowned cars. It's much nicer for the environment to use these cars until it isn't economically feasible to keep them on the road and too many people are willing to just throw away cars when there are so many wonderful cars to choose from on the market. People love to poo poo on these cars, but they are good reliable cars and shouldn't be feared! Yes, a Toyota or Lexus is probably less headache to own as far as repairs goes. the oil and air filters you buy from the dealer are made by Mann so you may as well get them from rockauto. Mercedes under designed the transmission mounts so you can upgrade to one from a clk500 black not cheap though. One thing people don’t talk about which these cars which I’ve had/have seen others have is the supercharger clutch pulley. Those things suck, check for the bearing and any noise coming from it. The spacing between the pulley and the electro magnetic clutch should be 0.35mm-0.45mm. If it’s under 0.35mm it will chirp and the supercharger will engage too harsh, if it’s over 0.45mm your supercharger will be sluggish. These cars are strong but everything is finicky, tensioners and pulleys are going to be your worst nightmare if they do go. A new supercharger pulley (oem/oem style) will set you back at least 500 us. The E55 was my dream car, now I can’t wait to sell mine

    • @adogmcdizzle
      @adogmcdizzle 2 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

      Tensioners and pulleys are all at the front of the engine and easy to check/replace. You don't need to replace the whole supercharger pulley, you can just replace the bearing: th-cam.com/video/TQsVok6BC50/w-d-xo.html
      The harmonic balancer is expensive it fails, and unlike the other parts, can't be found aftermarket, so unfiortunately that one is a big bill. See my other post.

    • @ihaia829
      @ihaia829 หลายเดือนก่อน

      @@adogmcdizzle I agree they are easy to check and replace but doesn't make parts cheaper. The supercharger pulley wears on the rear, that makes the pulley closer to the magetic part of the supercharger. This is a issue im having currently. I'm not sold on Mercedes quality. My wife had one that had transmission issues and the alternator died after 48,000. The newest one had some valve for the engine and it was $1500, the car only has 51,000km on it! Seem kinda junky.

    Bro oil pan “easy to replace”??? Funny dude. It has an upper and lower oil pan and 2 drain plugs. The front subframe has to be dropped for proper replacement of oil pan and oil pickup tube seal replacement. In the US it costs around $2k. Clearly for you it’s as easy as an oil change, since in both cases all you need to do is just pay for it, the mechanic does the work.
