I just had the same problem on my mercedes w124 om602, air was entering my fuel supply and the fuel filter would run out of fuel and the engine would stop working. So I took off the tank and changed the rubber pipes that connect the iron pipes to the tank and washed the tank and when I put it all back the air stopped coming into the system and now it works normally.

Did you figure it out mine is doing the same thing and I have been pulling my hair out. Runs fine for a long time then when it gets hot the air is in the return like yours. Mine has a looped return due to WVO system so the air gets pulled back in the intake line. HELP!
I never figured out why there was air running through the fuel lines. I believe it is normal. My problem was a rough running engine that would smooth out after the engine got warm. I did a compression check and found the #1 cylinder compression was lower than the rest of the cylinders. I continued to run the car and it got worse, so I chalked it up to a bad #1 cylinder and junked the car.
