Maren makes it… straightforward to use toner at home.
This week we are going to talk about TONER in hair dye and hair color. This is the main way I get rid of brassiness in highlighted hair & blonde hair. I’ve tried purple shampoo ( • Does purple shampoo wo... ), but toner is wayyy more effective.
I usually do this immediately following bleaching my hair & creating highlights in my hair which I’ve made a separate video on( • Highlighting my own DA... ). Depending on your starting color and desired results, you may or may not want to do this step before you follow the advice in this video.
We are going to talk about how both semi and semi permanent dyes can be used to tone hair. I’m going to tell you what toner CAN do and what it CAN’T… because as great as I think semi permanent dye is, there are limitations. Whether you’re blonde or brunette to start though, there are lots of looks you can create DIYing your hair color.
Then I’ll take you through a step-by-step tutorial of how to actually apply Demi permanent hair color from mixing up your products to applying it to hair to rinsing it out properly… I got you covered.
This is something you can do at home for all my people that on a budget out there or trying to save money on their hair and beauty routines. That is the reason I have continued to do this myself at home even post-restrictions and lockdowns. You can do this between salon visits to tie you over or to replace them altogether.
Let me know in the comments down below if you’ve ever DIYed your hair dye and how it came out.
Thanks so much for watching !
    -xoxo Maren

It's so nice to find a brunette who is doing this because every video I find is for blondes. I have the bronde like you and I was always like ok so what about me...what do I do? I'm not blonde! Thank you!!!

Rena, I totallyyyy feel you on that!! And the same things don’t work for bronde as blonde at all!! I tried the advice for blondes in my purple shampoo video and that didn’t work at all for me. It was so frustrating and also a waste of money haha. So happy I can share what I’ve learned here now!!! Thanks so much for taking the time to leave a comment. Honestly made my day.

Finding this video just saved my hair. THANK YOU! I’ve had the same stylist for 8 years and I have been able to avoid an uncomfortable conversation. My highlights looked much more blended after she styled my hair, but maybe it was the lighting? In the natural sunlight, it did not look good at all. I don’t think she put any toner on the bleached parts at all. I’m 40, but I still haven’t worked up the nerve to speak up if I don’t like a service. Especially when it’s days later. Your video was very informative, thorough, and well paced. My 10 year old daughter was able to watch with me and help correct my hair, so this mishap got to become an unexpected bonding experience!

Ashley, YOU'RE SO WELCOME! I am so humbled and honored to get to help you so much AND to get to be a part of your bonding with your daughter on top of it... my heart is glowing reading this comment. You made my day.
That being said, ARGHHH I'm so sorryyy you had this experience to begin with. It is sooo frustrating going into the salon, paying a lot of money, and spending your time there.... and then not getting what you want. A truly horrible feeling and it really is so uncomfortable having to tell them that you don't like what they did (even though that is well within your right to do). I am right there with you.
I am proud of you for looking for a solution, fixing it yourself, and hopefully getting back to loving your hair.

Thank you Lauren for your kind words!!! Sounds like we are similar in a lot of ways. I love arts and crafts and a good DIY, but hair color alwaysss intimidated me because it’s something on your body, there’s an overwhelming amount of products out there to choose from, anddd I really didn’t know anything about coloring hair.
I think understanding a little of the theory underlying it is so helpful in feeling more confident doing this yourself, and so I’m really glad you mentioned this in your comment. I didn’t know if people would find it helpful or more confusing to hear all that color theory. I definitely went down the rabbit hole of the internet researching this when I wanted to start doing my own hair haha- so happy to get to share some of that knowledge now!! Would love to hear how your hair turns out when you end up doing this!!! :)

      Hi Maren,
A new subscriber here. Can you please let me know if I need to use a colour fill after bleaching my hair to get to a level 7? My hair usually comes out a dark murky green Halloween colour 😬.
I am so nervous to go to the next step. I have ordered the colours you have on this video.
I am so nervous to take the brunette plunge.
I feel like I am missing something here and if I don't have to use a filler to go from blonde to level 7, that would be awesome 🎉

@@ColdandRain202 Hi Friend, welcome to the channel & happy to have you here!
Let me clarify a few questions:
      (1) so you were darker, bleached your hair , and now you would like to be at a level 7 ? so darker than your bleached hair?
      (2) what product have you used in the past that got you a green color ??
      (3) how dark were you trying to go when you got the green? I can totally see why you’d be nervous about this if this has happened to you in the past!!
      (4) personally I’ve never used a filler. But I also haven’t dyed all of my hair at once. I am going to read up on this though so that when you let me know the answers to those other questions, I can give you me (unprofessional)opinion haha based on what you say. I’m sure if they make that product it is useful in some cases, I just am not sure yet what those cases are.
      (5) I’ve always found doing a strand test to be super useful. Just picking like one strand of hair on the bottom side of my hair and seeing how the product takes following the exact instructions I would do on my whole head. I also sometimes Pick out hair from my hairbrush and use that to do a strand test (kind gross haha but it works) that way it’s even lower risk than when it’s on my head. Like the first time I ever bleached my hair I took a clump from my hairbrush first to experiment with lol.
I’m glad you found the way I explain things to be helpful! Looking forward to hearing more about your hair!! -Maren

Madison, thanks so much for the comment & the compliment on my results :) I’m glad to hear you liked how it turned out too!!!
For the transformation I show in the thumbnail, I used Wella Color Charm 7A and 8A mixed. I left it on for 20mins. I feel like the colors all turn out slightly darker than the box says they will be personally, and found these to be perfect.
The ratio is 1:2. This means you use 1 part of the color tube to 2 parts of the activator. So for example 10grams of color from the tube needs 20grams of the activating lotion mixed with it for it to work properly.
      Does this help?

Hi Ana, OH NO!!! I’m so sorry this has happened to you. I’ve definitelyyyy been there late night researching how to save my hair. It’s sooo disappointing when you spend all that money at the salon and aren’t happy with the result.
No, I didn’t feel like my hair was copper-ish after! It was more like light brown highlights in dark brown hair. The “ash” part of the hair dye (the A after the number on the package) means it contains cool undertones. Blue undertones (ash undertones) are the opposite of orange on the colorwheel, so it helps to neutralize any brassiness or orange-ness. That is why I specifically picked the products I used! Having the right product makes all the difference here.
      Does this help?

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  8 หลายเดือนก่อน +1

Hi, thanks for your question. I understand how this could be confusing! You’re going to need 2 products to do this: the Wella Color Charm hair color (comes as a tube in a small box) and the Wella Color Charm Activating Lotion (comes as a bottle). Both are linked in the video description so you can find them easier.
Now for the math, which is what I think you are asking about. The ratio is 1:2. This means you use 1 part of the color tube to 2 parts of the activator. So for example 10grams of color from the tube needs 20grams of the activating lotion mixed with it for it to work properly. If you use 25grams of the color, you need 50g of the activating lotion. It’s always twice as much of the activating lotion as the color that you need to mix together so that the products work properly.
Does this help? Let me know if you’re still confused, and I will try to explain it a different way. Thanks for watching!!

Hi, sorry I missed your comment earlier. I would probably apply the toner to all my hair if it was me just to make sure it is even and fully blended at the roots. I think it would be hard to do that with the cap on for me personally. The toner won’t really affect how the rest of your hair looks since it is too dark for the toner to really show up on. If anything it will just make the rest of your hair shinier. Let me know if you have any other questions & happy holidays!

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  10 หลายเดือนก่อน +2

Thank you Sandy for the compliment on my hair! Great question!
So I didn’t choose the Wella color charm toners (like T10, T14, T18 etc) for 2 reasons:
      (1) I was worried they were going to be too light to work even on my highlights. They seem to be mainly marketed to all over blondes and very light blondes. There didn’t really seem to be a shade that corresponded to light cool brown which is the color I wanted my highlights to end up. The demi permanent ones, I felt like I had better/clearer’s options to match the end result I wanted.
      (2) These toners from Wella are a type of permanent hair dye. Compare this to the demi permanent I used in the video which fades over time. This means that experimenting with the demi permanent ones at home is wayyy lower risk. Also if you want to change up your look in a few weeks or months, it is much easier to do. To remove permanent hair color, you must use bleach to lift it back out of the hair strand, which is hard to do properly yourself at home (at least based on all the TH-cam videos where I’ve seen people try to do this themselves).
      Does this help?

@maren makes it - I have been coloring my hair for years and agree with you that it is really simple and can save a lot of money as long as you're willing to put in the time. I have not built up the courage to highlight my hair though! Lol! I had highlights last year that damaged my hair so I have been nursing it back to health. I was not liking the 7 inch dark brown regrowth and 6 inches of brassy orange highlights. So I decided to do an all over color with 7NA and 5N. It resulted in a more even overall tone but a lot darker than I wanted. It was much better than the dry, brassiness! Now the color is starting to wash out and looking orangey. Any thoughts on what color to use on the 6 inch old highlighted area to get rid of orange but at the same time I want to lighten the regrowth but without bleach. I hope this makes sense. :)

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

Hi Liz, thanks for your comment!! This makes perfect sense. I can picture your hair - you did a great job describing it!! I commend you for your DIY hair coloring.
Okay, so the good news is that your hair is getting healthier and the Demi permanent dyes don’t do any damage to your hair and are actually good for it (can make it more shiny and hydrated).
The bad news is that there’s really no way to significantly lighten your hair without using either bleach or hydrogen peroxide (which is what is in the developer you use with permanent hair dye), both of which are drying to the hair and risk damaging it. Other than that maybe trying sunshine and lemon juice, but that personally never worked for me as a brunette.
One thing you could try is low lighting the bottom part of your hair. That won’t lighten your regrowth but that way at least it wouldn’t be all dark and you keep some dimension in your hair. I actually just made a video on this last week. th-cam.com/video/sY8NQvvcMDA/w-d-xo.html
The other option honestly is to get it lightened again, whether you do it or a salon. I think the first time I did my own highlights was super scary but now I’ve been doing them for 3 yrs and my hair is still very healthy as long as I take care of it between visits. There’s a lot of things you can do to prevent/stop dryness and nourish the hair between hair coloring and trips to the salon. Also the shampoos and conditioners you use make a big difference too in my opinion for the overall health of your hair and how long your hair color lasts. If you need recommendations, let me know. Hope this helps !! -Maren

@@marenmakesit Thanks so much for your kind words. I appreciate you taking the time to respond with some helpful tips. I thought of adding a few lowlights as well but still have some trepidation from my last horrible highlight experience. It's so difficult to find a stylist who knows how to lighten brunette hair without compromising hair health. I commend you for doing your own but I am too chicken to attempt that on my own. Lol!
Years ago, I did an all over color with 8N or 8NA with 20 developer which lifted about 2 shades but the problem was it left me with that ugly super warm copper brown/orange. I will say that low lights are MUCH lower risk than highlights to do yourself because you're just adding color (not doing any lightening) and with a demi perm dye, it will wash out after about 20 washes so it just sort of fades out on its own. Demi permanent dye (at least the wella one that I use) is a 10 volume developer specially formulated to go with their dye but that is basically what it is, so it does no lifting (lightening of the hair) because it's only 10 volume. The higher the volume number, the more lifting power it basically has. The demi perm dye always makes me hair feel shinier and more hydrated after. I don't feel like it does any damage at all, so doing my own lowlights is pretty low-risk to me.
I know "gloss" treatments do something similar but these last shorter and have no developer in them so they are even lower risk (like Madison Reid and dpHUE color boosting gloss if you want some brand examples). But for example if I was nervous about doing my own lowlights, I would do them with one of those because (1) there's no risk of damaging my hair (2) it will wash out within a few washes anyways if where I put the lowlights doesn't look good). It could be like a practice run to see if you want to do a demi-permanent dye or lowlight hair.
Now all of that is for lowlighting or going darker.
YESS I totallyyy understand the orange/brassy color you're talking about. SOOO FRUSTRATING!!! When you did that with the 20 vol developer was that permanent hair color?
Now for your questions about toning:
You can use a demi permanent dye to function as a toner. It's not quite as permanent at the "TONER" that Sally Beauty sells for blondes, but the way you use the demi permanent dye creates the effect of "toning" the brown hair to cancel out the orange. SO for example, the A stands for Ash (which means blue undertone) in the wella hair color. Blue is the opposite of orange on the color wheel so it will cancel that orange-ness out. So for example in the video I used 8A and 7A for exactly this reason because I knew that I wanted to cancel out orange-ness.
SO I guess it really depends where you are right now with your hair color and what they goal is what products I would use.
Does this help or did i just make it more confusing??
I will get you a list of some products too shortly.

@@marenmakesit No, not confusing at all. I have been coloring my hair for years and understand the color wheel and all that good stuff. I really appreciate your genuine desire to help others. Very very few vloggers ever respond to viewer's questions so THANK YOU!
To answer your question, I did use 20 vol developer with 7N permanent hair color. My starting color prior to color was between 5N and 6N. It resulted in a very warm Level 8 orangey brown. That was years ago. These days I only use Demi hair color because my stylists said it's easier to lift when highlighting. I have never tried using a 20V with a Demi so not sure how if it will lift. If so, and it gives me the same results as it did with the permanent, then how would I tone down the orangey brown? Currently, my hair color is what I described above (5N/6N) but want it to be at a level 7 but as cool as possible. I would be doing an all over color (root to ends). I know there won't be a lot dimension without highlights but I can add some later when the old highlights have grown out.
Do you have product recommendation for a good thermal/heat protectant product that isn't greasy or weighs down hair and actually protects hair from heat damage? I look forward to hearing back on the product recommendations!

Personally I love this part of YT (talking to people in the comments) just as much as I like making the videos!! It’s such a cool way to get to connect with people that I would have never met otherwise.
Hmm if you used a 20V developer with a Demi permanent color and got something super orangey, you need something with blue tones in it to cancel out the orange. I would probably use like a 8A or 9A Demi permanent color since they seem to “run” darker than the package says in my opinion. Honestly I would personally probably do it in 2 steps and use bleach to lighten and then do a Demi permanent hair color all over after just because that’s what I’m more familiar with using and I feel like it gives me more control. I also think bleach is a more powerful lightener than hydrogen peroxide (developer) alone and I think helps you avoid the orange. Of course I’m not a hair dresser, but this is just my observations from my own hair experiments!

Hi, yes they are Demi permanent. These are the 2 products I use mixed together! They recently changed the packaging, so that’s why they may look slightly different than what I showed in my original video.
      Wella Demi Permanent Color
      amzn.to/492vSdS
      Wella Demi Permanent Activator
      amzn.to/3wZLelZ
I used a blend of 7A and 8A in the video, however I would now probably use just the 7A or 7N (maybe even mix in some 6N) because they changed their formulations slightly, so they no longer “run darker than expected” like I said in the original video. They are more true to the color chart now. So if you look at that in the link, you can decide if you want more of a dark blonde of the 7 or more of a very light brown of the 6.

@@Schaefer2022 you’re welcome! I’m pretty sure in this video I just applied the dye at the roots first (to give it the most time to develop/apply there) which was enough to get it to look a little darker there.
You could also apply a shade one number darker at the roots (or mix the one that is one number darker with the one you used on the rest of your hair for a more subtle effect). You could do this after washing the first time if you feel it’s not blended well enough as a separate step or you could do it at the same time as you do it the first time on the rest of your hair with the slightly lighter shade and then just make sure to blend them well together so there’s no clear line where you switched from one to the other.

I've had highlights for a year and a half now, and 6 monts ago I got some more.
At first they were great, but now I want to change since they've become kinda blonde, and I'm a brunette.
So I don't know what to do to get the results you got, I'm kinda lost.
What is toner exactly? Is it what you used in the video?
    Thank you

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  ปีที่แล้ว +1

      Hi Clo,
Thanks for watching the video! I know this hair color stuff can be so confusing & so frustrating when your hair color fades to be blonder than you like. Great questions!!
So “toner” in hair color is ANY product that allows you change the underlying color of your hair (without making it lighter).
It’s kind of like if you’re editing a photo and you slide the “warmth” slider and you can make the whole photo look more yellow or more blue without making it darker or lighter really. The “tint” option on iPhones does this too but for making your photo more green or red. That’s basically what “toning” your hair does.
If you don’t edit photos, then you can think about it like sunglasses. Ever notice how some make the world look more yellow-y and some might make the world look more cool toned? And sometimes the funky ones will have like a pink glass in them and make everything look kind of pink?
So in hair dying, ANY product that allows you to change the color in that way is a “hair toner.”
What is kind of confusing is that there are other products in hair dying that allow you to tone the hair. Demi permanent hair color (what I use) is just one of them. Another example is semi-permanent color. Another example is henna. But ALL of these can do the SAME JOB which is “toning” the hair.
It’s kind of like how a “hair styling product” could be a gel or hair spray or mousse or wax - ALL of those help you hair keep a certain shape and not change shape during the day but they are all different products.
So yes, what I’m using in the video is a toner!
Does this help? Hopefully this explanation didn’t confuse you more!

so If I used perm wella color charm will that make my natural brown hair orange?

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  ปีที่แล้ว

Hi Sarah, I don’t have a ton of experience with permanent hair color, but based on what I do know, it depends what color your hair is now and also what color you’re trying to achieve. You can get orange but not necessarily.
For example, if your hair is already dyed with permanent hair color, you need to use bleach to lift that off before you can do much else (besides going darker than you are now, it’s a lot easier to go darker).
If your hair is virgin hair and as dark as mine, I would use a 30 volume developer with my permanent hair color because it lifts the hair more and you’re more likely to end up with blonde instead of orange. If I were to use a 20 volume developer, I would probably end up with orange.
So it sounds like with natural brown hair, you’ll want the 30 volume developer + your permanent hair color.
However this is just what I can say from my own experience and research. I prefer to do it in 2 steps with the bleach step (th-cam.com/video/XM3xpDMhquM/w-d-xo.html)
and then the Toning step (this video) because the demi permanent dye is less scary to me than the permanent stuff, and I feel like I have more control over the end result. Let me know if that helps!

      @marenmakesit  3 หลายเดือนก่อน

Hi Debbie, sorry to hear this happened! That’s so frustrating when you don’t get the results you’re looking for and can’t seem to find the right product.
Keep in mind I am not a professional, but here’s a few thoughts & questions, I have on the matter:
      (1) what color was your goal? If you have light brown hair already and are using a light brown dye?
      (2) are you using a permanent or demi permanent dye? Permanent dye is a different beast for sure.
      (3) how long are you leaving it on for? I find that most dyes will get really dark if you leave it on for the max recommended time (or more) and keep in mind the dye starts developing once you mix it together, so it’s important to apply it quickly. It could be the product you used, but it could also be the amount of time you left it on for.
      (4) Some brands do seem to run darker than their color charts so going a shade lighter seems to be helpful. Wella just recently changed their formulations to be more accurate to the color chart finally (it used to run darker than expected for sure).
      (5) I would highly recommend always doing a strand test first before committing to your whole hair.
      (6) Definitely choose something with Ash undertones to cancel the orange brassy color. Ash is a blue undertone and blue and orange are opposites on the color wheel, so that’s why they will cancel each other out.
      (6) Blue shampoo is really good for brunettes to keep away brassiness.
My gut instinct if I was you would be to try the Wella 7A or maybe even 8A. These are more like “dark ashy blondes” than “light browns” and would hopefully cancel out some of the orange without making you significantly darker. Do a strand test and leave it on for more of the low end of time that they recommend on the package. It’s always easier to go darker than lighter, so worst case you find you need to leave it on longer by doing this. Then I would use blue shampoo to maintain it.
Sorry this turned into a longer answer! Again, I’m not a professional, but hopefully this helps a little!

Hi, thanks for your question! I’m not exactly sure how much total you will use, but I am guessing it would be similar to me based on how you described your hair. I would say I use about a tube of color (2 oz.) each time with 4oz. of developer. The developer comes in bigger bottles, so you won’t be using a whole container of that at a time. You want to make sure you have enough to fully saturate the hair so you don’t get splotches by accident!
I say “about” because oftentimes I start by mixing less and then apply that to my hair and then mix more as I need it.

@@pebles361 I can’t speak for other TH-camrs but for me personally getting to engage with people in the comments about stuff I already like talking about is a big part of why I like making videos!
Wella is a great brand, so I can see why your mom would also choose it. This is a Demi permanent dye, so it won’t damage your hair. It will probably actually make it shinier and smoother feeling. The reason it doesn’t damage the hair is because the developer used here is only 10 volume, which is the lowest number of developer (it goes 10, 20, 30, 40). This is enough to activate the dye, but not enough to damage it.
You could definitely create mahogany. I would use one of the Wella colors with red undertones. I looked it up for you and this would be 5RR (red) and 5VV (more purple red) and 5WG (more orange red). Over dark brown hair, this should tint it towards a redder color to give it a mahogany look.
As for the hot roots, I would probably look at the Wella color chart and see what color in there matches your dark brown the best (you can also mix 2 if you’re between).
      www.wella.com/professional/m/pdf/Wella_colorcharm_Demi-Permanent_User_Guide.pdf
I would apply it to the roots and then blend it down several inches at least into my hair strands to make sure it looks as natural and blended as possible.
I would probably do the covering the hot roots part first to get a more even hair color and then add in the red as a separate step after. Technically you could do them at the same time, but that starts to run the risk of splotches if you apply unevenly or too slow…I’ve had splotches…2 separate steps would be safer.
If you just wanted to go even darker than your current dark brown, I would probably go with the Wella 3N or even mix it with a 2 or 1 and leave it on for the max time. I would start applying at the roots first so the roots have it on there the longest to help give the lighter hot roots more time to absorb the color. Then I would go through and cover the rest of my hair.
Sorry that was a lot of info! Hope I didn’t overwhelm you. I just wanted to address all your questions. Does this help?

@@marenmakesit Don't be sorry! Yes, it is a lot info but very important info which I love just because I don't want to mess my hair even more. I don't know what I would do if that is the case!! I've been sick so I haven't tried anything yet but when I do I'll let you know for sure. Thanks a lot! ❤️

Definitely let me know if/when you end up trying it! Hope you’re feeling better!

What color did u actually use on your hair in this video?

For the transformation I show in the thumbnail, I used Wella Color Charm 7A and 8A mixed. I left it on for 20mins. I feel like the colors all turn out slightly darker than the box says they will be personally. Does that help?

Your hair looks darker than a level a level 7 or 8 wouldn’t that lift the hair

    • @marenmakesit
      @marenmakesit  ปีที่แล้ว +4

Yes you’re correct my natural hair is definitely darker than that. It’s more the highlights which I created with bleach before I tone the hair that are a level 7 or 8 and that’s what I based my color choice on.
It doesn’t lift the hair any extra because the developer that Wella makes to use with this product is only 10volume. The higher numbers of developer like 20,30,40 do lift hair color (the higher the number, the more they can lift). This was something I researched into because I was worried about the long term and doing this repeatedly.

My stylist gave me highlights in my base after I told her I wanted them only a few throughout the bottom and throughout the bottom of my bangs , I’m a light brown blonde in the winter and dark blonde in the summer naturally and never dye my base only the ends and my stylist when through the top with highlights in my roots that’s yellow looking and I’m not digging it , I found a 7 A but couldn’t find a 8 at Sally’s , I was going to try the 7A alone but haven’t yet .

@@joyphoummavong3165 ughhh that’s so frustrating when you have a vision for what you wanted and it doesn’t come out that way. I’ve been there for sure.
You can order them on Amazon if you want I have them linked there if you wanted the 8. You could also see if they have a 9 and then mix 7 and 9 and create an 8 that way.
You could also probably use the 7 and just leave it on for like only 10 mins so it doesn’t get a chance to get that dark and the color has less time to develop.
Again I’m not a professional, but I’m my experience that’s what I would suggest. It’s easier to go darker than lighter at home for sure, so I would be cautious just using the straight up 7A. I wouldn’t want it to end up too dark.
Also let me know what you end up doing and how it turns out!
