This week I will be bringing you my updated guide to how I tone my own highlights at home to get rid of brassiness. Overtime after you get your hair colored, you may find your highlights or balayage fading into a color you don't love - oftentimes a orangey color or a very straw yellow may seem to show through especially in certain lights. But WAIT, before you take another trip to the salon to try and correct this, watch this video first. This is my under $20 fix for that very problem. Following my tutorial could end up saving you hundreds or even thousands of dollars, and who doesn't like having a little extra money in their pocket?
I will walk you through the entire process from the brand I prefer to use to do this and explain some hair color theory along the way (but in a way that makes it easy to understand for non-hair professionals). We will talk about what the numbers mean on the boxes with regards to levels in hair color theory, as well as what the letters mean on the box. I will also go over the difference between a semi, demi, and permanent hair dye and what each of these mean in regards to how many "washes" each will last you. There are other factors that will influence how long or short these dyes last you like UV/sun exposure and the type of shampoo/conditioner you are using. The two brands I have personally had a good experience with are Bumble & Bumble and Ghost (linked below).
Demi permanent hair color is perfect for experimenting at home because it lasts longer than semi-permanent dye (4-10 washes), but is not permanent the way permanent hair dye is... meaning you get long lasting results for your efforts, but without being committed for the next year to a look.
It can be used to tone the hair color (dye it more cool or warm toned than it is right now) or to go darker. You cannot lighten your hair with a demi permanent hair dye alone. This is what makes it perfect for brunettes as a way to tone your highlights when they get a bit brassy or a bit orange over time (you know what I'm talking about) as a way to bridge you to your next salon visit.
I will also touch on the recent formula changes made by Wella. If you want to know more about these formula changes, check out the video below as I made a whole deep dive into that. This would also be a great video to watch if you need more help picking your hair color. th-cam.com/video/UUeed9MxkXE/w-d-xo.html
After this in depth discussion of how to choose your color, I will show you each step in the process starting with how I set up my bathroom to do this, how I mix the developer and color together, how I apply it to my hair, how long I wait to wash it out, and how to properly rinse it out.
As always, I want to thank you so much for watching. Don't hesitate to put any hair color questions in the comments down below. If you haven't noticed, I love talking everything hair color, and will be happy to give you my (unprofessional) thoughts on these matters.
Happy Hair Coloring!

Hi, thanks for a great detailed video, this is my 1st time using wella, I did not realize that I would need a 10 volume developer 😢, I only have 20 volume developer, I suppose I cannot use the 20 vol. developer if the color calls for a10 vol. developer? 🙆🏻♀️🧐🫣😳
@@amer-inkan2026 you are correct! To get these results, you need a 10 volume. If you use the 20, you’ll get some lifting/lightening going on in there too and the results will be much harder to control.
That’s the same gluing technique that I use! I find that it makes my nails last the longest, definitely!
@@MrsMcGwire great minds think alike :) awesome to hear, thanks for writing this comment!
Does this work with professional grade lash glue/extensions
Hi, and thanks for your content. How much time do you have away from the house to go shopping, sightseeing, etc.? No one would expect you to be home 24 hours a day, would they? I want to tell you about a very recent experience that upset me. I finished a house/pet sit at 11 a.m. because the owners said it was okay and they would return from a holiday in about 4-5 hours. I cleaned up and finally swept the white-tiled floor and left. The homeowners came back some 5 hours later. The dogs had never been left alone that long before. About 30 minutes after they returned home, I dropped off the keys as arranged, but while I was there, the lady slipped and hurt her wrist in a pee puddle outside her bedroom. One of the animals had left. I immediately felt guilty, but I knew I had cleaned the area where the puddle was. I suspect being left alone for that 4-5 hrs was too much of an anxious experience for one high-strung dog, and while having access outside, nevertheless peed inside. Indeed, I had found one other puddle during my nine-day house/pet sit. I advise thoroughly inspecting the tiles before leaving and letting the owners know you have done so, especially if an accident has happened previously or the dogs have been gone for a longer than usual period. What are your thoughts?
Thanks I totally forgot about the Amazon lockers
Helpful, thank you!

Can we use toner for covering gray roots with very dark ends?
The more you know 🫱🏻🌈📖
@@lcguillen87 thanks for watching!
so glad i found this! i zoomed in on the text to the left of the chart- this is about what color the dye will have wet while processing, not the rinsed and dried end result. it says the results will be the same, but will appear different during processing. instead of going on dark, most will go on clearish and develop close to their end result color. before they would go on dark and look very dark before rinsing off. its so you can now watch the dye development in real time and know when its done.
My thumb nail press on won't fit. So I'd have to buy the wide just for the thumb nail. :(
What colors of the demi did you use to get that tone color? Did i miss it in the video? Yours turned out really nice

Great upload. I love shopping at GOODWILL. The first thing I go for is the mugs. Then the books, CDs, and DVDs. When I shop for clothes I like to go through every single rack disregarding their way of organization because I know people don't always put stuff back AND the people who work there don't always place items in the correct location. When it comes to shopping retail, I don't like to buy something just because I see it in a store. I like to give myself the opportunity to want something in particular from a brand, check if they have it, and then sell stuff that I already have to purchase that item. This doesn't happen very often because a lot of the stuff that I get at GOODWILL is already top notch. I think this comment is long enough. I hope to see more from you on what you score at GOODWILL. And also a bit more about lifestyle and travel.
I remember this staircase featured on unsolved mysteries with Robert Stack years ago when I was a little kid. It was a cool segment.
Is it OK for the house owners to give you a tip for doing a great job?
@@billcrystal yes, I don’t see why they couldn’t.
Thank you! I just got highlights for the first time in 25 years. I paid $135 + tip for a cut and color, and I don't like my highlights. It's not my beautician's fault though. I didn't know what I wanted, so she suggested something popular. Now I'm trying to figure out what to do about it without spending another $100+.
@@Candace142 Candace, sorry to hear you don’t like your results. That’s frustrating after you spent the money on it already. Hope this video helps you find a way to love and feel confidant in your hair again! Thanks for watching.

@@armanrezvani2159 Word-of-mouth and using my connections by letting people know that I’m available for petsitting has been the best way to do this for me. When one person has a good experience with you, they suggest you to other friends who travel often etc. Alternatively, you can make a Facebook flyer and post it on local community Facebook groups or join an app like Rover (however that can take more time to build a profile/reputation I think).

Any one with common sense knows that car camping is not going to be without some serious downsides. Still it can be very doable if you have a way to pay the bills and are travelling, as their is a lot of upside to that. It is better if you are in a van with solar power, and even better is a class B RV with solar power. Many people these days are left no choice but to turn their cars into living quarters. For all the downsides their is simply no other choice for some and it does save you money.
Thank you for making this video. My experience has been that finding a place at the last minute within 20 mi of the original destination that is less than $150 per night is incredibly unlikely.
@@dianemckim9535 Diane, thanks for adding your experience to the conversation here! I appreciate that. I think it entirely depends on what city and country you’re in. I had no problem with it when this happened to me, but I realize in some states/cities this would be much more difficult. I would imagine especially in large metro areas where 20 miles doesn’t really take you “outside” the city to less expensive options….this could be problematic.
Please respond to my first comment @marenmakesit
Hi, I have a couple questions. Am I able to mix a 7 natural blonde with a 6ash blonde? What would the results be? My highlights are about the same level as yours but a little more brassy so I desire a cooler effect. Also, do I have to use the color charm toner? I already have a bottle of 10vol ion developer. One more, can I tone with wet hair? My stylist uses wet hair

I am only at the 1:39 mark and I can't tell you how thrilled I am that you're doing this! You may talk about this, but the jelly/transculent ones are what has sent me on this expedition because they have no SIZES! The accent/special ones do but the "regular" ones don't, since they are translucent. It's been this way for all the jelly sets I've gotten. Some people just see what fits, but I need numbers, at least to match them to one another! Very excited about this!😊
Great video! Do you find then to be damaging to your own nails?
After watching many videos on toning that walk through the chemistry of hair and the color wheel......all great but i just want to get my hair less brassy. The steps and product information get lost in the excess of information. Maren, I appreciate the basic description of what is needed while giving just the snippet of lifting / toning / coloring / bleaching info. THE MOST HELPFUL TOOL you used, was the markers and paper visual of the direction one color will take your hair depending on the color starting point. That sounds obvious but, that's what i needed to have that, "Ooooooohh! I totally get it now!" moment. And I think I'm so smart...... Thanks for converting your chemically & technically rich knowledge to a simplified, easy to follow direction. SUBSCRIBE!
@@annedinardo2877 Anne, thank you SO MUCH for leaving this comment you made my day. I totally understand. I found it SO confusing and overwhelming while learning how to do this. It was like there was too much info out there and not enough info at the same time. I really appreciate your feedback as I plan future content. I hope your hair ends up looking super fabulous! Stay tuned for more hair videos coming soon.

@@EVAHONGERHOLT you’re welcome! I know what you mean. 🙄 It’s so frustrating when you find something that works for you, and then the brand changes it… I’ve been able to get good results with the new one I showed in this video though! I think the colors changed more than the activating lotion. I think before they just called it “activating lotion” even though it was always “developer”. Like it’s more of a marketing/branding thing than any difference in product. It looks and smells and appears exactly the same.
