Fax machines are actually still widely used in Japan, Parts of China, and the former Soviet block countries. They were also used by the US government well into the 2000's.
Ever notice how at any business that uses a fax machine, there are only a handful of employees that really know how to work the damned thing? Poor people.
Faxes aren't obsolete. Look around offices and big stores, they still use fax. We even had an HP fax (not in use but in working condition) but we didn't use it since we don't have a business.

I work in a restaurant and we still get faxed in orders all the time.
