Great review, i had and carried this bag for years, still loks new, i recently replaced it with a vaquest tolcat bag, about the same size but i think it makes far better use of space, i can actually securely put three inch water bottles in the side bags...
Very nice review. Nice size day bag. I have one of their gearslingers but have found it gives me alittle back muscle pain. I guess I need to stick with a double shoulder bag . Thanks for the great vid.
Thanks again for the great review Sootch. My Wife and I finally took the plunge today and purchased the Fatboy in Navy and Royal Blue Foliage. We thought that would be more low key in an urban setting at least colorwise. Concealed carry is a hassle in the Columbia area in the Summer since it is the hottest place on earth!
I'm getting one of these to replace a MountainSmith combination shoulder/fanny pack I've had for years. Never used it as a fanny pack. I'm tired of it now. The Fatboy will handle all the gear I want to carry. Thanks for the review

I wonder, do they make a slightly smaller version of it. That seems kind of huge.. I keep a lot of stuff on my person but heck, that size could double as a small BOB :) A slightly smaller one might be cool.. for wallet keys, whatever else, spare mags and such.

Soon as I got an iPad... I started taking with me everywhere...sadly my iPad Pro would not fit ...and this bag was retired after 2 years service. Not a stitch out of place..now I use a noatak ...still miss my fat boy so much thinking about getting the thermite to couple with my noatak

its a good back but one thing i didnt like both on this version and the larger one is the straps for the top flap that are too short but i found a small fix on the the fatboy version. just pass the plastic buckel in the loop . dosent work for the larger one tho i like the added handle (mines dont have one) its perfect for a T91 netbook btw.

What do you do for carrying water with this bag? I've been wavering between this one and the jumbo because of the water bottle pouch on the jumbo, but I like the size of this one. I could add a molle pouch on the pouch you use for your binocs, but seems to me that would make it the same size as the jumbo, and I might as well get it. Decisions decisions. Great stuff Sootch.

But it's handy because I can put extra stuff in there depending on what I've got going on...camera, sunscreen, binoculars, lots of ammo if I'm headed to the range, snacks if I'm going on a hike, etc.... I don't carry all that stuff every day, but the little extra space makes the bag much more versatile, while compromising very little in the way of comfort or ease of use.
Is there an upside to these vs a day pack? Just like fanny packs ID'd many as carrying concealed or as cops, these in my eye ID the carrier as a prepper. I prefer the gray man look.
This is a great Versipack from Maxpedition for carrying like a sling bag, but does anyone know some good Versipack with handle for carrying in a backpack?
@4thRico I don't think you can get a full size DSLR in the Fatboy. I carry my D-200 with an 18-200 lens in my Jumbo, as EDC. I suggest you go with the Jumbo. Look at Sootch's vid on it & you'll see my set up. John
Can someone tell me why you do not see the "multi-tool/cellphone" pouch under the shoulder strap buckle on the "S-type" that you see on the "right hand model"? Every ad or photo I have watched has it on the R but not the L style.

Maxpedition products are lifetime products. Don't let the price scare ya, that's how long it's gonna last. So you're paying for your gear ONCE. That actually makes the price sound a lot cheaper doesn't it?
Could you fit a bottle (eg. 0,5 litre / say 16oz) inside? I cant decide between Jumbo and Fatboy because of the bottle holder. Great review BTW, I really like your reviews! :)
Michal Urban I was pretty set on getting the Fatboy, but once I checked out the Jumbo, there was no question it was a better bag. The Jumbo has a great water bottle holder, multiple places with PALS webbing to attach pouches, and doesn't have that strange and outdated cell phone pouch.

It's quite good and cheaper (although not as cheaper here in Czech Republic as it is in the States, dang! :)). Of course, the stitching and materials are of lower quality than Maxped, but I wanted to test how much Id be happy with a shoulder Jumbo-style and Jumbo-size bag - really happy, that is. :) When this UTG breaks, I'm going for a Jumbo (s-type; I'm right-handed but usually carry bags on my weaker side plus I like to have my ). Anyway, I'm still checking the Fatboy out ... I'd like another, smaller pack. Trouble is the Fatboy S-type is not inverted copy of the right-hand-side version ... the small "phone" pocket (great for my small flashlight) with pencil-holders is missing. I know I could just use an M2 pouch but as I saw some pictures and it doesnt seem to hold as good as the integrate one. BAD MAXPEDITION!
Respond to this video... If your out doors hiking, hunting,or just walking through the woods, it's a satchel to carry essential stuff in, no different from a backpack. However, I wouldn't be caught dead walking down town with it. :-)

it's not that expensive considering also. condor has a similar one around $40 and this one I've seen around $50. maxpedition is generally better quality though condor is also good as well.

Great review! A good idea in Fatboy is to make a loop of paracord on the zipper. It will be easier to open and close it. It will also look even cooler
