  • This is a preview of Anthracite Railroads in the 70s Volume 3. This DVD is available from www.johnpmedia.com
    DVD summary:
By the 1970’s, the once thriving Anthracite roads were struggling to survive.
The long decreasing demand for coal, along with a series of other contributing factors, left these roads in spiraling financial decline.
These railroads managed to keep the freight rolling into the mid 70’s with little resources available, but the die was cast and all the Anthracite roads would eventually be swept into Conrail in 1976.
In Volume 3 of the Anthracite Railroads in the 70’s series, we’ll continue our look at the ailing operations of the Lehigh Valley Railroad from Treichlers, Pennsylvania to Lockwood, New York in the last few years leading up to Conrail.

loved watching the LVs crossing Foote Ave in Duryea from my grandparent's house in the '50s and 60s', making the climb to Avoca, then waiting for the pushers to come back down. Better days.

My great grandfather Stephen Kearney worked for the Lehigh Valley railroad out of Coxton Yard near Pittston where my paternal grandparents were born, my late father was also born there. 4 of
my grand uncles & 2 second cousins also worked for the Lehigh Valley railroad also out of Coxton Yard. I have volume 3 of the Lehigh Valley railroad along with Trackside around Scranton from
1950 to 1976 on my coffee table in my home.

Sad all these roads are gone. They should have been bailed out seperatly to keep the compition going in the NE.

I've always loved those Cornell Red LV GP38-2's, especially the nose with the diamond. Kind of weird as I'm in Minneapolis but on the other hand I like the Cubbies too. This is a great video with what I'm assuming to be original sound that's been cleaned up. I especially like the commentary which really helps those of us who wouldn't know where any of these scenes are or what trains are being shown.

Thanks for the compliments. Most of the sound is original recorded on site with a cassette recorder, restored and remastered and then "married" to the video in editing

I love this old footage with units that are all gone now. I would have a foam attack though if you got a hold of good sound film from Southern California from the early to mid 70s.

Hi John, do you attend the train swap at the Palmerton High School? I went last year and absolutely loved the Lehigh Valley layouts. Looking forward to purchasing some of your DVDs next year if you go!

I do not attend the train show circuit since we are now in Florida, but I do have dealers who do attend. Brian's Model Trains regularly attends that show and many others
