  • Ep.56 / Every day I open social media. And every day I see something to compare myself with. Why is comparison the first action I take? Is there a way to do it well? Should I stop? Comparison is a creativity killer. Does that mean we artists need to stay off social media once and for all or is there a way we can protect ourselves? We have some ideas to share on episode 56 of the Bold Artist Podcast.

I am inspired by artists that I consider "better" than me. It helps keep me motivated to learn more and more. I peruse art all the time and will continue to do so. :) I have had weak moments (not many) of feeling a little inferior, but I also realize it's not because of some defect in me, it's because I'm still learning and will always be still learning. Great podcast!

Always nice to know we all go first to comparison in any situtation until we "do the work" as you are both such a shining example of to BECOME OURSELVES which takes great courage...Bravo you two, keep up the great work.

I do not think that I could stop the comparison or even that uneasy feeling that one gets when you see someone else do what you wish you could do. What I can control though is my approach to comparison and use it in a positive way to push for growth. A healthy competition of sorts!

Yes, I think you got our point well. I even saw your most recent work on IG and instantly wanted to paint like that. It's hard to stop that instant feeling. Quickly turning it around is key.

I can really relate. I've looked briefly, and many people tell me I need to know my competition for painting pets. While I peeked a little in the beginning of my process, I found myself discouraged, so I try not to do it very much anymore. I have a dream to do this....and I am probably taking the hard way to building this, but I really am excited for my launch soon. Thank you Charla and Marijanel! You are awesome!

Knowing your competition is important in business. And artists are in business. We have the tough job of separating that part of business from our art. I do think it can help us grow though. If you are painting the exact same style as three other artist in your area comparison will help you know how to evolve your style to stand out. I think you got this!! I'm excited for you to launch too! Don't forget to share all of that with the community!

Good art example: Banksy art pieces.
Bad art example: George Floyd murals.

Those are both great examples of political and social justice art. Banksy is a true artist in my opinion whether I like all his content or not.
