    Due to the unusually warm winter we had ending 2019 and coming into 2020 a lot of the feral honey bee colonies in our area appear to have starved out. As a result the calls we've gotten for bee hive removals have been sharply reduced this season. The size of the colonies we are seeing has also bee affected. This one was particularly disappointing due to it's small size. The home owner was hoping for a honey score and I thought they were going to get one for them by what the FLIR showed during my first inspection. The amount of work required to access the bees as pretty much the same whether they are a tiny colony like this one or a fifty pound honey comb hideout. Since there isn't much more work to remove a nice size colony I'd prefer to find one of those than a runt like this one.

    What a sad sight, the world famous 628 Dirt Rooster throwing a pity party. The irony is I never even came up with the idea of a swarm challenge. My recollection of what happened was I casually mentioned that I had caught over 20 swarms that year and you said, " Only 20? I caught that many in just 2 weeks this year. Hey, how about you and me doing a swarm competition next year, it would be a lot of fun!" The rest is history. As far as choosing a therapist I'd offer this, talk to the watermelon hand. It was good to see Indiana Pete at the end, I figured he was looking for treasure. God's peace brother.

      Everybody wants to assume the lady in the group has to be married to the alpha male. Its a good idea to remember that women can also be capable of being hair brained and voluntarily mess with God's creatures that were given stingers to defend themselves with without a man asking them to.

      I have only 7 hives going but started with an Africanized hive so i know all about stings. I had to give the queen the hive tool test and dispersed the workers to the four winds after they failed to accept replacement queens after two tries.

      @@micahestep7679 I'm sorry to hear that. The majority of my feral-caught 30 colonies are all AHB. I love them. Hearty, monster-honey-producers, and I have a 3% failure rate per year treatment-free here in Texas! But it takes a different management style and different equipment. A hint: for gloves, get some blue PVC gloves from harbor freight for $8 a set. 0.1% of the stings compared to leather. Good luck.

    • @SandraNelson063
      @SandraNelson063 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      For years now there has been a dreadful decline of bees. This is due to a lot of factors: the shifting of the climate, the over use of killing pesticides, industrial farming, the mites, bee killing viruses...It's hard to be a bee. Bee keepers will come out to look at a hive to find all of the bees dead or gone, when the hive was just fine a day or two before. People don't seem to understand; if you want to eat FOOD, you MUST protect the bees!

    • @628DirtRooster
      @628DirtRooster  4 ปีที่แล้ว +3

      In my opinion this is a result of an unusually warm winter causing the bees to eat up all their food stores and then starving out before our first flow in spring. It's happened before, just very noticeable this year. May be just our region because some people north of us are not seeing the same thing.

      Are they still on a live colony? You can treat with Terramycin and/or add healthy brood frames, remove honey and feed sugar water and move that hive to a location where there you have no other hives.

    I know you are a “hobby” bee keeper, but what do you do for a living? I had a friend that had a few hives on his flat roof who has passed, which why I follow you!

    When giving directions to a southern lady, you use terms of left, right, up or down. That way we know just what you're telling us to do.

    Is it me, or was that not a bright idea to continuously vacuum while wearing mesh head gear, knowing good n well that u had a queen bee in a picking position, or do u just say the hell with it, let's suck her up, and hope for the best?? Just curious, cause watching u and Mr Ed's video, I know that the queen bee is quite important!

      The good news is that the vacuum is very gentle on the bees, and I've never injured a queen sucking her up into it. And I never can find my fast-moving AHB queen, so they all go into the vacuum.

    You can always count on the dirt rooster to find some to do his work for him. With Covid 19 keeping most of his helpers away he will have a hard time beating Mr. Ed in this year’s swarm challenge (this message brought to you on behalf of Jeff Horchoff, who approves of. its content .)

      I left Mr. Ed a bottle one time and it came back with a urine sample in it. Got me gun shy about leaving bottles with people.
