I do mix and match ML and Mafex. For my X-Men specifically as there are some characters that Mafex is yet to do, and some ML are getting upgraded by purchasing the Mafex option (with few exceptions, like Cyclops, I don't like the Mafex and probably Xavier won't be replaced as he just sits on his chair). I would even go to Marvel Select for bigger characters like Collosus or Juggernut.
Anthony, I have been waiting for your review on this product. Being at the stage of collecting where I am searching for the best character representation - my collection has an assortment of ML, Selects, and Mafex. There is something about the paint décor on this product that is very attractive. The head sculpts are obviously the best Jean Grey out there. You convinced me that this product is a worthy upgrade. Your audio and video are perfect. The lighting is also straight-on. It would appear your new review station is fully operational now.
I don't understand why you think you can't mix and match. This Phoenix fits in perfectly with the rest of her Claremont X buddies from the Marvel Legends line.
i didnt say you cant. the consideration for not doing it, though, is that marvel legends look like junk happy meal toys compared to nicer figures 99% of the time
@@AnthonysCustoms I honestly think it is insulting to compare Hasbro's figures to Happy Meal toys. Yes, Hasbro is not perfect, but the majority of their figures are solid. Not to mention the amount of work they put into the line. Also, until Mafex tackles the rest of Phoenix's team (Nightcrawler, Cyclops, Colossus, Storm, Wolverine and Banshee), the only figures she fits with are Hasbro's.
I used to mix and match, but then the prices of imports became close to 100 dollars and Legends went to 30...I kind of quit both. Except, I started collecting Marvel Select figures, because they were worth it.
Mafex hasnt changed much with their prices the last couple of years since Covid. Most sit around $105. But Revoltech on the other hand... I picked up Carnage for $75 and Agent Venom is selling for double that! $100 has always been my cap.

3:01 - Well, to be fair to the figure, you also need to pose her into those curves, that artwork on the box for example had her legs pushed against each other. That said, they could take some notes from the Bunny Suit Planning Figmas.
*QotD:* I'll mix the lines if one iteration is far more suitable to what _I want_ over the other. MAFEX Magneto is the closest we've gotten to a good looking Jim Lee Maggy, so he's around over the doofy Marvel Legends offerings. If there were any other import one I'm looking at it'd probably be Jubilee since her ML figures have been lacking for my tastes too.
I don't own any Mafex figures, but I do have an Overwatch display that's about 50/50 Figma and Hasbro, and those work great together IMO. If/when I were to get any Marvel Mafex figures I'd happily put them with my MLs and Jada figures.
Q of the Day: I collect both lines. I don’t maintain a display, but if I did, I would have no problem mixing and matching. I don’t know if you’re a NFL fan, but a popular axiom is that if you have two or more quarterbacks competing for the starting job, you don’t have a NFL caliber starting quarterback. That’s how I feel about these recent Hasbro and Mafex Phoenix offerings.
I only have one Marvel Mafex so far, the rest are DC, so they stand on their own. But I do put the Magneto I have in my ML X-Men display. I do want more Marvel Mafex figures and I do plan to keep mixing with ML. As for this figure, that metallic paint is gorgeous, but it’s wild to me that ML is gonna beat Mafex out regarding effect parts on their release. I predict owners of this figure getting the other one for those effects or just picking them up separate from eBay. As always, great review!
I mostly collect Mafex, but I do buy the occasional ML if it’s a character that Mafex hasn’t made or if there’s something that I want that comes with it. For example, the Black Widow in my Mafex Avengers display is ML, and I bought the new ML Phoenix just to use the stand for the Mafex.
I'm basically an ML collector.y only Mafex fig is the cyborg Superman. Mafex really has to "WOW" me in order for me to spend that much on a figure. Mafex has some great home runs, but if the character doesn't really mean that much to me I would not pay that much. I can understand your point about comparing apples and oranges. I would most likely get the ML Phoenix, budget permitting, because of the Phoenix Force Effect. I like the Captain Planet reference of "with my powers combined..."
I do actually mix the lines, but usually i tend to reserve mafex versions if they’re really good (magneto and gambit) or if the legends versions just don’t look great or are expensive (pyslocke)
Theres a stumpiness to her that I can't quite figure out. Maybe a longer ab piece would have helped but then throws off the height. I mix and match lines. I just judge by how much it lines up to my minds eye and the bang for the buck. Some stuff next to each other works for me. Theres some stuff that's just so bad or different styling that there's no way. Like some of the worst ML. But Mafex Spider-man is perfect for what I'm looking for and I think goes perfect with ML Venom for instance. I haven't gotten an X-men Mafex yet though. They all seem off. The exception was Magneto but I wanted him a little thicker and Ive got my own custom Im really happy with. But I've got Revoltech Wolverine next ML Cyclops, Spiral, and 90s Iron Man, with mafex Spider-man, and DS Colossus and they all feel at home together. Need a Revo Cable reissue.
I usually get Mafex only for DC figures, because there's no longer a 6-inch domestic option and Spider-Man, just for the added articulation (though, I would be sorely tempted if they made a classic looking Beast). I wouldn't call it mix and match, really, they're on separate shelves.
I don’t see anything wrong with mixing if one is better suited for the display primarily since a display is stagnant and as long as the scaling lines up.
I only have the Mafex Stealth Suit Captain America from Winter Soldier, but due to not having a lot of room on my Marvel shelf, which is all Marvel Legends, I don't display the Mafex Cap on my Marvel shelf. I haven't even stood it up next to a Marvel Legends for height comparison.
I did pre-order the mafex Phoenix a awhile back, but then I saw the marvel legends one having a more menacing evil looking head sculpt and it's coming with flame and fire bird accessories, I also considered the pricing and you get more for the cheaper one, which pretty much convinced me. So, I pre-ordered the Marvel legends one instead and canceled the mafex one. I do collect both as I have all the mafex X-men figures, pre-ordered mafex rogue, and I have some of the marvel legends X-men villains. Hopefully mafex does a beast and professor X to complete the team. 🤔🤩
yeah honestly i had both preordered but after owning this for a couple weeks i cancelled the ML preorder. i'm in canada so the price difference is not that bad since USD to CAD is horrible, but JPY to CAD is really good. I think including shipping the Mafex is only about 10 bucks more, and I just bought bootleg fire effects off ebay that are fine enough. what matters to me is the quality of the figure and they really nailed this one, whereas all the videos of the ML one has a lot of the same QC problems that ML figures tend to have, like seam lines and gate marks. its more excusable when its cheaper but definitely not worth it at that price
I definitely prefer this one over the Marvel Legends version, but I'll wait for a bargain sale or something, just like how I'm not paying $50 for the ML one; there's no way that fire bird is $25. I do mix my Marvel Legends with my MAFEX, mainly the characters I'm 100% sure I'll never see in import form.
I don’t necessarily actively collect both lines but I do have figures from both mafex and hasbro marvel legends displayed together. For me just depends on the specific character or figure if I will get it or not and which version.
QOTD: I don’t intentionally buy Mafex and Legends to be mixed, however Legends still hasn’t provided me with a Spider-Man figure that I like. So, the Mafex Spider-Man is in my Legends display.

This looks better than I thought it would but I personally prefer the sculpt and proportions of the Marvel Legends. This MAFEX and many of their recent females just look too bland in proportions. We're always talking about how the male figures should look "heroic". The females also need to look more "heroic". From the waste down this Phoenix looks like she never hits the gym for anything. Her upper half looks better but not much. I don't need She-Hulk and aint asking for Jenna Jameson proportions but this would be a must buy for me, if she was just a bit more curvy & athletic like the source material. Can you review the Marvel Select Gamerverse Spider-man? The figure came out a couple years ago from the first PS4 game but they re-released him recently.
how are you a toy reviewer and dont know the reason for drop down hips ? unlike human skin, plastic doesnt bend, even the softer one they use on hips, so a drop down allow better range while keeping the hip shape. what would be your ideal solution that is better than this ?
I'm a toy reviewer who also designs action figures so I know exactly how these hips work and why they are used. I also know they don't work well and don't accomplish what good engineering can. You don't keep any hip shape with a drop down. You create a dislocated hip and a gap in addition to an interior joint which is riddled with problems. There have been countless figures without hinged hips with better range and aesthetic. Good, simple engineering is always preferable to complex engineering to try to do the same thing. Not ever drop down is terrible, as I mentioned here, but they are almost always unnecessary for figures of human characters.

mafex gambit mixes in 100% with marvel legends. I definitely use Some mafex figs to replace marvel legends. other examples are Spiderman and most likely the upcoming mafex daredevil.

Mafex gives me creepy mannequin vibes. the expressive faces look like some early 90s cgi mind's eye. Non convincing expressions, that's the best description. The majority of the joints aesthetic isn't hitting any marks for me either. So yeah, I'm happy to miss any and all Mafex.
I mix my ML with Mafex/SH.Figuarts. However, I’ll admit that most of my ML are placeholders for rare versions of characters or big bad guys, that I know Mafex/figuarts won’t release.
I do mix ML, Mafex and MS (only Juggernaut). Could I only do Mafex, i dont think so, some figures are expensive and not as good (this one for me is not good enough). Some figures might never be released on Mafex, so I use ML if theyre good (spiral). I think Mafex is overusing the bodies too much. I think this one will have the same proportions as the Rogue one, which is a shame for the price.
Only mafex I really wanted was psylocke but at the end of the day I’ll just wait for legends I can’t justify $100 for a 1/12 figure and it sucks there so much I think even if you get them for $70 it’s still too much imo
For the question of the day, I'm not the type of collector looking for the newest figure of a character. I instead buy only specific figures that I'm interested in. As a result, Mafex and ML are never on my radar, because I simply don't want them.

Being an import directed at adult collectors I don’t understand why mafex keeps making the female figures so modest. Psylocke was the biggest disappointment when it comes to her body proportions. I grew up on the voluptuous/fit art style of Jim lee and that psylocke hurt my heart of hearts

If you like old school style looks of Jean, this is a must get. The Marvel Legends one looks modernized and the head sculpt looks realistic.

I mix all figures when I feel like it. Brands aren’t the boss of me and I’ll play with my toys however I like!

I mix and match depending on the style and era. Having no effect pieces sucks for the cost, but a solid, not great figure.
Mafex gives me creepy mannequin vibes. the expressive faces look like some early 90s cgi mind's eye. Non convincing expressions, that's the best description. The majority of the joints aesthetic isn't hitting any marks for me either. So yeah, I'm happy to miss any and all Mafex.
I mix my ML with Mafex/SH.Figuarts. However, I’ll admit that most of my ML are placeholders for rare versions of characters or big bad guys, that I know Mafex/figuarts won’t release.

I do mix ML, Mafex and MS (only Juggernaut). Could I only do Mafex, i dont think so, some figures are expensive and not as good (this one for me is not good enough). Some figures might never be released on Mafex, so I use ML if theyre good (spiral). I think Mafex is overusing the bodies too much. I think this one will have the same proportions as the Rogue one, which is a shame for the price.
Only mafex I really wanted was psylocke but at the end of the day I’ll just wait for legends I can’t justify $100 for a 1/12 figure and it sucks there so much I think even if you get them for $70 it’s still too much imo
I mix and match lines and IPs. It's all just one big shared universe in my toy room, if I want it to be.
For the question of the day, I'm not the type of collector looking for the newest figure of a character. I instead buy only specific figures that I'm interested in. As a result, Mafex and ML are never on my radar, because I simply don't want them.

I am mixing and matching mafex and Marvel legends. I try to get Mafex if its worth the price else just stick to Marvel legends.
I collect both but do not mix them.
I feel like face sculpt needs improvement and we have gotta have some effect parts for sure.

Being an import directed at adult collectors I don’t understand why mafex keeps making the female figures so modest. Psylocke was the biggest disappointment when it comes to her body proportions. I grew up on the voluptuous/fit art style of Jim lee and that psylocke hurt my heart of hearts
I disagree, I tend to pick what's the best looking and posing figure despite it being different companies. Tldr I mix them
Mafex body with ML headsculpts
I will mix them only with legends that mafex will never do and that look similar in facesculpts
Mafex is way better than ML Phoenix. The sculpt is phenomenal really captures the comic version, unlike the ML that has bulky legs and wide flat feet.
