This video is what got Queen banned on American MTV back in the day. When MTV still was a relevant music channel. Queen's status in the US took a hit because of MTV and their banned content. Queen "Are Responsible For MTV's First Ever Banned Song."
The first time seeing this video we were in the TV room at the ambulance service I was working at. One of the guys commented how pretty the girl in the kitchen was. The rest of us fell on the floor laughing. Had to break it to him that it was the drummer, Roger Taylor. LOL
The dancers in the middle section of the video are members of the Royal Ballet. Freddie wanted to dance with them, so they made it happen. Also, Roger Taylor was stunning in drag.
John Deacon wrote the song from the male perspective of the women's liberation movement. The video was meant as a parody of the ITV soap Coronation Street. Freddie is the housewife, John is the grandmother, Roger is the schoolgirl, and Brian is another housewife. The idea of the video come from Roger's girlfriend.
Freddy was an artist in all different definitions of that word. He was a graphic designer, fashion designer, entertainer, songwriter and one of the most unique voices of the last century if not millennium. He had one of those voices that you recognize the moment he starts singing.
The band and especially Freddie was never afraid to make fool of themselves for having and giving some fun. 😆 Pls, check out Freddie performing The Great Pretender.
John wrote the song, Roger's partner came up with the idea of the boys being in drag (dressing as characters from long running soap 'Coronation Street '. Freddie had offered to shave his mustache, but was told it would be funnier if it stayed. Oh, and the 'on fire' alarm clock was a device called a 'Teasmade', which was supposed to wake the user up with a cup/mug of tea in the morning.
I was introduced to Queen in the 70's... I was working as a roughneck... In South and West Texas... Drilling Oil Wells and Gas wells.. Absolutely love Queen from Day One...
This video got Queen banned on MTV and vh1, they thought it was all Freddie's idea to dress up in drag. It wasn't. Freddie said Roger, Brian and John ran to jump into their frocks but they all had fun.
Yep, a combination alarm clock/ tea maker. From what I understand, the original Teasmade machines had a reputation of kettle malfunction… but later models were vastly improved.

Freddie definitely did a costume change for this number when they performed at Wembley stadium back in the '90s - he came onstage in drag, with the hoover (vacuum cleaner) just like in this video - I can't remember if there was a set change as well, or they may just have shown shots from the promo video on the huge screen behind them, I can't remember
@@stevesoutar3405 (Hi, I'm guessing you mean in the 80s....) I'm just curious: Did this happen in 1984? The only video footage I've seen with Fred dressed in drag, was from 1985: at Rock In Rio; in Australia (they're both awful video quality, tho) and in Japan (which was the only decent video footage I've ever seen).🖖
This video was a blast. They took chances and pulled it off, I've never performed in drag, so I've never known how to get comfortable like that. This was gutsy, and amusing.
the video was banned in the US they didn't get it we got what the idea was in the UK Fredy asked the producer if he should shave his mustache off for the clip they thought it would be more fun with it on.
From what I've seen referenced, this video was the idea of John Deacon, the bass guitar player. It was based on classic British comedies and theatrical traditions. As an example, during the time that William Shakespeare was writing plays, ALL roles were played by men.
I absolutely absolutely adore you, Maggie. You are incredible and I fell in love with you the first time I seen you. Keep on keeping on you are the best. You have an amazing voice of beautiful face and are a treasure to this world.
I just watched a cover of a terrific Queen song that you will just love!!!! The Tenors "Who Wants To Live Forever" featuring Lindsay Sterling. The guys are dressed like cool vampires and Lindsay's violin only enhances the song and video. Tugs at my heart everytime. Hope you are having a beautiful day!!!!❤
Avant garde performance, circa 1984 ;D. Freddie's voice never lets you down, but honestly, it was confusing as heck even back when it was new. Remember, MTV banned it ;P
This wasn't their video that was actually banned by MTV. It had happened 2 years before with Body Language which ended becoming their biggest US hit from Hot Space.
That was another time in 80 it was shocking and controversial. Many music stations banned that song, and tv stations did not want to show that on TV. The band had legally problems.

Hey, Maggie In case no one mentioned it, the band were fans of the drama, Coronation Street, which is where they got the idea from. This video, as well as the one for "Body Language" from Hot Space, was banned by MTV
The house scenes are a parody of Coronation Street - longest running UK soap. The middle dance scene is based on Nijinsky dancing Prelude to the Afternoon of a Faun
Love me some Queen! Mom and I went to see a Queen cover band-A Night of Queen-in Lexington,Ky. They were absolutely awesome. My mom had no idea how many songs she was familiar with and liked that were actually Queen songs😂
Its really odd, in the late 70s-mid 80s we didn't have a problem with this, half the rockers were cross dressing, we either ignored it jamming out, thought it was funny and had a laugh or thought that it was hot and jumped in... What happened to us as a society? When did this get so controversial?
When you said "what is happening", they recreated all of their previous videos that they made over the course of their career to that point and made it into one video
I really want to see you react to one of Citizen Soldier's songs. A good song to start off with is "This Is Your Sign". Also, I bet after making that video, he would appreciate what women do for beauty.
Freddie was well out by then. It was a tongue-in-cheek homage to 'Coronation Street' - a popular soap opera. John Deacon wrote it as a women's liberation anthem of sorts. The idea for wearing drag was the idea of either Roger Taylor or his girlfriend, depending what you read. Wearing drag in England is a time-honored practice, especially for comic effect - Benny Hill, Monty Python, among many others - so they thought it'd be fun. The drag got the video banned by MTV, and hurt the bands' popularity in the states. Huge hit in England.
I’m not a expert in queen but I believe back in the day there was so much backlash in America from this music video that they never toured America again they didn’t understand the British sense of humour
Americans didn’t see the funny side to this song many stations banned it. Many people believed this video destroyed their reputation in America untill Bohemian. Rhapsody came out in Wayne’s world.

The alarm clock was actually a Teasmade. It was an alarm clock that would also brew a cup of tea, so, that it was ready when you woke up.

Maggie, It might surprise you but it wasn't Freddie's idea to dress in drag for the video, it was Roger who suggested it.
I'd heard that it was John Deacon, the bass player.
@@OriginalLictre see other comments it was Roger's girlfriend's idea.
this was in my era and god knows how i loved it and we totally were in on it. What a drag, and what a laugh

Amazing singer and showman. I think his vocal range was F2 - E6. Wow!
How hot was Roger?!
As a young man encountering Rogerina for the first time, I spent a not insignificant amount of time examining my own stance on gender... lol

In case no one mentioned it, the band were fans of the drama, Coronation Street, which is where they got the idea from. This video, as well as the one for "Body Language" from Hot Space, was banned by MTV
And what they did to the "Bicycle Race" video was unforgivable (if not unexpected) blur mania.
Only Body Language was banned, it's just a myth that this one was also banned.
It wasn’t his idea to dress up. It was John’s song. Based on an English soap opera. Americans didn’t get it and MTV would not play it. What a loss.
One of my favorites. But, "It's a Kind of Magic" from the Highlander film soundtrack is my all time favorite.

The lead guitarist of Queen, Sir Brian May, is a nationally known ASTRO physicist who helped design the international space station
Freddie shaved his mustache for the middle part. He was interpreting Nijinksy in l'Après-midi d'un faune (Afternoon of a faun).
