      My next door neighbor went into the navy to specifically become a submarine chef, because they were the best of the best and could go on to become chefs in the white house. There were also height limits on how tall you could be to serve on a sub. Just a couple random facts I learned from him!

    My husband served in the navy 22 years and all of those years he was either under the water or talking about going under the water. While we were dating he joined the Navy Submarine Reserve to keep from being drafted into the Army. He was called to active duty during the Cuban Missle Crisis. He went on a diesel boat in Florida. He then was recommended to go to Nuclear Power School so that he could be on the newer subs. He graduated from the schools required and was assigned to a fast attack sub. When his time was up on that and was given the opportunity to go to a FBM, he refused. He loved his fast attack subs. It made him feel special, I guess, I don’t know. We got married in between all of this and had children. As I said he retired after 22 years and then worked at the shipyard repairing them. Until he retired again. I went on two Dependents’ Cruises. Submarines are not meant to ride the surface of the water. I was dreading when they dived the first time. When the horn sounded and the words, “Dive! Dive! Dive!,” we spoken my heart stopped. They shut the hatches, and we started down, but when we breathed the air that the ship generated, it was wonderful. It was like going down on a smooth elevator and the air was the cleanest air I had ever breathed. It was great! Of course all the men that served on the ship were not on board. Only the crew needed to conduct business. We never really left our waters. My only complaint was the bathroom. It didn’t operate like a regular bathroom. My husband prepared me for that. The food served on the submarine is very good. I remember when we first got married and I was eating baloney sandwiches for lunch, he would come home later and tell me about the number of lobster tails he had eaten and he made sure to eat one for me, too. They have some of the best cooks. At least back then. The other thing that was very special was because fast attacks have only one crew, the men are especially close because their lives depend on each other doing their job! Of course there were a couple of a**holes but even they were in check when out to sea. There weren’t any women on subs back in those days. Being a spouse of a Submariner was not on my list of things to do when I was young and planning my life. At times it was difficult because he was gone so much. Fast attacks has the schedules of any surface ship. There were six month patrols and then three months here and two weeks there. I’m glad we had our children late in our marriage. As it is my oldest child doesn’t remember him much for the first 5 years of her life. He retired when she was 8 and our youngest was 2. They had Dad home for the most important parts of their life. I got to me some people who are very important part of my life now and I would never have gotten to meet them if we had not been a Navy family. There were ups and downs but I don’t regret any part of it. It made us enjoy our times together better. We are a very close knit family! 😄❤️🇺🇸

      I am glad your husband is alive. However I question why anyone would seek the thill of a chance to kill other people. You are proud of your husband for fathering your children and being alive, but why the need to gloat, but then question about this career?. "It made him feel special, I guess, I don't know". Your comment made really no sense and actually reflects on how small/big attitudes effect the world. Good on your husband for serving for 22 years... you never saw him and why post this comment. Clearly peace is not something you prefer?

    • @BH-sn7ws
      @BH-sn7ws ปีที่แล้ว +7

      My husband didn’t join to Navy just to kill someone. He was protecting his country but I guess with your mindset you wouldn’t understand. I never said that I never saw him! Yes, he was proud of his work and his family was very proud and we still are. We are still part of the Navy family. That never really goes away. I’m sorry that with your mindset, you will never understand and I’m happy that there are not many people like you in the world! Because he was out there sailing the seas of the world, I did have peace knowing he was a peace keeper. You’ll never understand so please don’t say anything more about it. Since you are an enraged man, I wonder what makes you so very enraged? I guess that’s why you don’t understand the need for the military! I’m sorry you are so enraged. Maybe someday you will find peace of mind. I’ll pray for you!!

    I was on a British Diesel/electric sub and the area to move around was so small. The coning tower was the only place for a sailor taller than 6'2" to stand upright. Food was stored everywhere throughout the sub. If you had even a smidgen of claustrophobia it would be a cruel event. The nuclear subs are void of a window to the outside but still have a healthier area to get around.

    I guess this is life on a Fast Attack Sub, as I had to say what to "the day starts early with the crew rising before dawn". My 6 "Boomer" (Ballistic Missile Sub) patrols on a US submarine was different from the workday described in this video as an A-Ganger. Did have 3 section watches, but the 12 hours between your watches you were off unless there were drills or equipment needed repair/maintenance. Food was good with milk and fresh vegies lasting the first 2-3 weeks into the patrol cycle. Claustrophobic feeling - never crossed my mind. It never felt confining and if you needed more "openness" space just go to the Torpedo Rm or Missile Compartment.

    10 years Navy. 6 1/2 years on two fast attack subs. Shhhhh. Be vewy, vewy quiet. We’re hunting wabbits. This video got a lot wrong. Three 6 hour watches. The whole crew was only up at the same time for drills or battle stations. The only communications with the outside world was by receiving satcom messages. We never transmitted. Most of the time our own military didn’t know where we were.

    Retired USN submariner. Not all of this upload was submarines. Some of the segments were skimmer vessels. Some of it was accurate. Not all of it. How it's changed. In my day, we never had a single female onboard when on deployment. I wouldn't recognize the submarine force today from what it was when I was active duty.
