    Not sure about Australia but in the States you must be very careful of frame rust. Especially on Toyotas. Dont be afraid to crawl underneath for atleast a good 15 minutes to check the frame and other components like ripped boots on ball joints and such. Take your time guys. I did this at a dealership in lexington kentucky. I was specifically looking for a 3rd gen 4runner as an overlanding platform. There was way more body damage than they showed in pictures. I crawled underneath and there was oil everywhere(probably valve covers, not easy to get too at all). Rust scaling everywhere. I was literally throwing chunks of rust at the salesmans feet. Lol the guy didn't know what to do. They wanted almost 4k out the door which is absurd for the condition it was in. I found one in better condition a few weeks later for about 3k with a 5spd manual(hard to find in the states) So again be careful and dont be afraid to say "hey im not buying this POS". Heaps of great info as always Ronny. Very informative channel.

    Thanks for the Video. I just started shopping for a land cruiser in Panama since I can't get a 75 in USA. Anyway, good timing to get some reminders on the stuff that we should always do before going to look at a used vehicle.

    Great video with great information, only thing I might add is if you are on a tight budget it might be worth doing a quick check on price and availability of upgrades you know you will have to do and parts you know you may need to replace. Some vehicles are hard to get parts for in certain areas and sometimes the parts for certain brands can be incredibly expensive compared to other similar vehicles. For example here in the U.S. you can typically find parts for a Chevy Silverado or a Jeep at pretty much any auto parts store, and usually for a reasonable price but parts for something like a Toyota or a Land Rover here are typically much more expensive and often have to be ordered and shipped from somewhere.

    True dat, When looking for my first 4WD I bought a fully kitted one.
    A week later went for my first weekend away then boom! rear diff gave out, resulted getting towed back and 7K in repairs once we started digging into what else could be wrong since the car was on the hoist already, front diff also, rear breaks.... And still going, redoing electrics, malfunctioning dual battery system... and it goes....
    Lesson learned I'm never buying an already kitted 4wd again.

      There are things to look for that can help you prevent getting a bad deal like this. I'm sure his 2nd video on this topic will go into more detail on that. If you are not sure how to tell good from bad yourself it never hurts to have a 2nd opinion. Most places here in the U.S. will allow you to take a vehicle you are interested in to a mechanic of your choice that you trust to look it over before you buy it to prevent getting a bad deal. If they won't do this where you are at make friends with a good mechanic or at least someone with enough experience buying and wrenching on vehicles that they know what to look for and have them go with you when looking over a vehicle you intend to purchase. They will be able to spot potential problems you won't and can help pull you back to reality if you've started falling in love with a pile of junk.

      thanks for the story, I'm still deciding whether I should buy one with mods or not
      but at the same time, I'm scared people who have 4WDs who dont do any mods don't take care of their car @ all e.g. salt water creek crossings

      I'm thinking if it's possible to find a 4wd being used by an older couple for its size whilst taking care of the car (regular maintenance by dealership) and not once being off-road then jackpot

    bought my 80 series auto petrol powered for $2500 with 9 months rego clean wagon except a few bush scratches .. previous owner bought it several years earlier it had never been off road till then he used it off road a few times nothing harsh though .. however it is a fulltime 4wd which is a downside as the front end is live and turning corners tends to wear out the splines on the cv and the spline end caps replaced all of that and the vehicle is a beautiful vehicle to drive both on and off road .. tyres were a bit low and now it runs around on bfg at ko2 tyres .. I have added to dat a 12000lb winch cheapie but works well to date a recovery kit air compressor and puncture kit and some cheap led bar lights as well as my old rectangle halogen lights ....with both fuel tank and reserve i get around 900 km on both unless offroading then that reduces to abou 750 km I'm happy with my low budget 4x4 .. its fully insured and if written off it will be around 10 k return not that i want to right orr the vehicle by any means I like my old girl she gets me out of the house fishing and camping and handles the hard tracks with ease as i dont go for broke when tackling the hard climbs and found it likes it better at a slower steady pace when mounting the rock climbs havent had an issue in the mud as of yet but look forward to some mud tracks in the future...

    One thing I would say, and I'm a young lad, is to consider or reconsider the value of diesel over petrol. I was set on getting a diesel triton or discovery for the better mileage. Ended up opting for a petrol Prado 95 series. Saved $3000-4000 on the price with other cars of similar mileage. That's 2 years of petrol and some mods right there.

    • @silentbob267
      @silentbob267 7 ปีที่แล้ว

      You make a good point, but diesels tend to retain their resale value better than their gas alternatives so while you pay more up front you will typically get more out of it when you sell it or trade it in.

    Another Land Cruiser website to try is IH8MUD. They don't have quite as many posts on their 200-series forum, but every other series (And the FJCruiser) they have more posts and topics than LCOOL.
    They also cover the older 40, 55, and 60 series Land Cruisers too. (And they let you view the forums without making an account)

    Great video.
    Here are a few tips for the USA folks from someone who sells used commercial trucks:
    1. I would suggest that you not accept the Carfax report the dealer hands you. Pay for the one month subscription and run your own so you don't get a filtered report.
    2. Also, check the NHTSA site ( www.nhtsa.gov/recalls?cmpid=TSGSOR0117#vehicle) to see if the vehicle has any open recalls.
    3. Some dealers use Blackbook (as opposed to Blue Book)to show values. When I print out values I have the option to filter which numbers appear on the page. Check Blue Book yourself.
    4. If you are buying from a branded dealer (Toyota, Chrysler, etc) they can pull every OBD scan performed by a dealer service center. Ask to see them. They may not like it. But, ask.
    And finally; Ronny. It took this Yankee a few minutes to figure out what a "KiYah" was. :)

    every time i go trade a car in i look on carsales to see how much it's worth it would say $20.000 but when you take it in to trade it in they offer you some thing like $10.000 then il say nar that's not right on the net it says its worth this then they get there redbook page out as a lot of the time they go off that site. but you need to pay for that site if i was to use it. also some time you could have a low kms car but not in the best nick so that will take some $$$ off it. i hate car yard's they walk all over you and only want to see you in a new car because they want your $$$ cheers for the video mate keep up the good work love the cruiser :)

      @eyesdark08 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      I would go a small SUV for a first car and not a large one. It’ll take you a couple of months to be fully okay when driving, which is harder in a huge car

    • @bd23002
      @bd23002 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      IGC23 what would you recommend mate?

    • @eyesdark08
      @eyesdark08 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      Sufc Davie okay so hear me out here but get a really dirt cheap sedan for the first 3-6 months or at least until you’re on your Green P’s. I finished my greens and got my full license a couple of weeks ago so speaking from experience here. Use the cheap ass sedan as something you won’t care about if you get a scratch on it, you hit a curb (and if you’ve just got your red p’s, you WILL hit a curb at some point lol). Then after a couple of months, sell it off and use the money to buy a 4x4. That way you won’t reck your 4x4 with damage from a novice driver (no offence, everyone kinda fucks up their car a bit when they first get their license, it’s a right of passage haha)

    • @bd23002
      @bd23002 4 ปีที่แล้ว

      IGC23 cheers man, good advice. I was actually contemplating doing something like this, because as you say I don’t want to be fucking up what’d probably be the fourby I drive for the next 5 + years

I have seen Viking Blood in the shops a few times but was turned off by the fact it was a mead but I just read some reviews and this sounds alright so I might give it a try.

    Hi all I would of thought that one of the first things to do would be determine what type of use the vehicle will be used eg. General use on tarmac. Towing on tarmac and or fully off road, weights to be carried onboard etc as this would sort out vehicles in the selection list?
    Russ

    • @Ronny_Dahl

      +Russell Wyborn that's what the research is for. There are too many different uses for 4wd vehicles, it needs a video on its own as I could go on and on about different things.

      Perhaps this will make a great video - Discussing different vehicle competencies("offroad ONLY" ) vs diverse terrains.
      OR
      Tips on choosing a 4x4 for the terrain you desire.(just like the tyre video/ the auto vs manual discussion u did)
      Its been my general observation that the 70 series is an awesome tourer & great for offroading in most terrains *EXCEPT* technical rock crawling/obstacles ( Stefan, All4offroad concurs with me) & i have also noticed you never post videos on the subject in ur LC79..
      I am all but sold to the 2017 76 GXL, but wavering now due to its perceived inability to handle technical rock crawling vs the big defenders,jeeps,patrols,LC80/100/200.
      Your opinion will be of utmost value, as watching ur pursuits on youtube in ur 79 was one the main reasons for me to consider the 76.{ but i need a competent rock crawler as well }

      Really!? I don't normally respond in this manner but I'm going to have to lay this out for you...
      I've always done tips and advice videos which are part of the entire channel, the trip/adventure videos are part it all. About a weeks worth of editing goes into the video episodes and thats not including the the actual trip either. If it wasnt for the other videos none of this would happen and and half my subscribers would not be here either as most of them come for the advice videos which you can see in the views. I'm driven by request and I think the views and likes would speak for itself.
      I have a 3 part series ready and uploading soon and a 2-3 part series starting in editing very soon.
      I do thank you for the support but you must have realised until I reach my goals I wouldn't have funding to do massive trips one after another... Diesel, time away from work, working on videos after day job...
      There is no quick grab of cash, the channel is hard work 7 days of the week, 365 days of the year. I'm shutting my business just to keep up with the channels demand as well so without Patreon this would not be possible.
      Just to clarify as well the Patreon is a bit misleading, if it states I get 500 per video its only true for the 1st one, after that it drops fast and by the time its the 6th video of the month is 40 to 0 in value and then resets then next month.
      I hope that clears up your questions and I'm mildly offended by the above as you might see. I have given so much time and effort to this channel and I'm going to keep doing it so long I can...
      You know what I'm going to make a video about this... If people really think this is so easy and making other videos than Adventure videos is for a quick cash grab then why aren't we all doing it then!?
      Cheers Ronny

    already "dislike" this video. as soon as you have mentioned that you have a friend and you can make a day of it. what if I don't have anyone? literally no one. not that I am person that you wouldn't tolerate, but for many years I had to learn how to live alone and depend only on myself. it could be a long story but I will end it here. what then? as I have purchased a vehichle where local mechanics (and authorised service) most of the time were not capable of fixing things, or of they have fixed something, they have broken something else, I had to learn by myself how to fix plenty of things around my car. now bought myself 4x4 and feel like I am learning from the beginning. don't have anyone around that would even give me a small advice on "oh mate, this could be done this way and you wouldn't have to take off this and this and this to gain access to that thing" or "yeah, so to open that clip you can just do that and that". most of the times when I repair something, I don't even know what are the names of the parts that I am holding. do you know how hard it is? to not even know what is the name of something so I am unable to Google/TH-cam search for it?

    Ronnie - regarding vehicle checks, you should direct Australian car buyers to www.ppsr.gov.au (which is the Personal Property Securities register that is provided by the federal Goverment). This is the equivalent of the old REVS check that doesn't exist any more. All of the other sites like this are just charging money and harvesting your personal information for other uses.

    Great video,but you forgot one thing: If you want a specific vehicle,like a HiLux, look around your friends/family members,if someone owns one you can ask them too if they have any complains about the car or if something broke really fast,maybe they even allow some test drives with it

    I bought a used Jeep TJ Wrangler the person I bought it from said it was never off road that was a lie I found out when the left control arm broke free from the axle because it was bashed probably on a rock and it had a dent high up on the rear quarter like it hit a tree my point is buyer beware

      Bring someone with you that is clinical and impersonal, someone that will tell you ‘you’re being ripped off’ and won’t sugar coat it. Also look up how much that car’s year/model is selling elsewhere beforehand

    Quick question Ronny!
    What order do you suggest me to build a d40/a 4wd car, I'm mainly talking about the big hardware(lift,wheels/rims,bullbar,roof rack)I've been told lift first then rims/tyre and then everything else whenever. Also what inch lift do you suggest 2"?

    • @Ronny_Dahl
      @Ronny_Dahl  7 ปีที่แล้ว +5

      +Ben Waterson I would do all the heavy things first so that the lift can be installed with all the weight of the vehicle. This will save you from doing it twice. You could always load it with heavy stuff to simulate the expected future load as well. Apart from that there is no real order to what you should do first

    My friend, that’s exactly common sense did for me. I started researching on line around 2 to 3 months before I went out and try to find a TLC FJ80 series. And yes, also commenting with friends that were more experienced than me with 4x4 vehicles. Finally, after 3 weeks looking for the “right one” for me; I found it: the mighty 1991 FJ 80 series Toyota Land Cruiser. I love it but of course it needs “meterle un poco de amor”=tlc; so far no mayor repairs on that old tired engine. Haha. Great and honest video, thank you. Cheers from Baja 🇲🇽 amigo!!!
