      Glad you did a two-parter and included a mid movie discussion after part 1.
      Since "Serenity" was picked up by Paramount, FOX did not share what they owned, which is the series name Firefly, the theme music, and the series itself. Instead we get a movie at a movie's pace.
      It's a soft reboot written for newcomers that also had to satisfy Firefly fans, and set up for 2 possible sequels that didn't happen :( . Because the actors for Wash & Book had other obligations, it was known they would not be able to participate in Serenity 2 & 3. Whedon wrote them in a way that would make sense why they didn't appear after Serenity 1.

      For Buffy, if you stick with it, at a point that will be them obvious. You will need to also watch a spin-off due to connections.
      How Simon rescues River is described completely differently in the show. He hired people to get her. In here, he's suddenly a superhero.
      I'm also not a fan of the change in relationship between Simon and Mal.

    Just a minor touch that I love is when we see Inara happily presenting herself to a new client, only to read the Operative's body language and instantly know he means trouble. We can see her expression change in that moment.
    "Serenity" was Joss Whedon's second chance. "Serenity" is story arc 1 of 3 story arcs. That is why there are some unanswered questions. Had it done better at the box office then we might have gotten a movie trilogy. Comic Books & Novels answers those unanswered questions, continues the story arcs, and along with a role playing game - adds more to the lore.

    • @Aeroldoth3
      @Aeroldoth3 ปีที่แล้ว +2

      Yes! I LOVE that moment, when we see the smile run away from her face, replaced with open fear. I really like that where most people judge others on what we see, companions are great readers... of body language, stance, dress, grooming etc., and are able to "see" a person far more clearly. We would just see a man, but in just seconds she realizes there is a very dangerous man in front of her, a trained assassin, AND that she's in trouble AND already caught.

    @TheBigMe0w ปีที่แล้ว +11

    Yay, Buffy! It's one of my all time favorites. Allows for in-depth discussions too! Looking forward to your reactions!
    Btw, it's been hinted that Joss Whedon thought about having Buffy and Firefly be in the same universe by having a known vampire from Buffy casually sip a drink in one of the Firefly bars. There's an interesting fan theory too that River is so special not only because of her training and brain alterations but because she's a Vampire Slayer too. (Certain girls are born with special powers that "activate" at some point). It will be interesting to see if you find similarities between River and Buffy at all and if you find this theory plausible.
    Edit: The first season of Buffy can be rough (low budget, network influence, monster of the week etc). The second is one of the best seasons though

    14:48 'He didn't lie down. They never lie down.' I think River is referring to the people on Miranda. The ones who died just laid down and let themselves die. The people who became reavers didn't lie down. And she may know this from some random bit of trivia she read from one of the 'key members of parliament.'

    I think that Book and Inara between them were informal counselors for all the rest of the crew, and with both of them gone, there was nobody for Mal to talk to and figure stuff out, so his relationships with some of the others deteriorated. Hence the conflict between him and Simon.

    Been a fan of the show since its very first garbled-order series run on Fox, though I don't have a lot of memorabilia on me, these days. I do want to point you to the Bedlam Bards, a filk music band that released a Firefly/Serenity-inspired album, On the Drift, back in the day, which you can find on TH-cam. My favorite track from that is a recreation of Saffron's Wedding Dance, which if you listen carefully, is actually a highly stylized version of Pachelbel's "Canon in D," a little easter egg that I'm sure nobody caught in the moment, but was a nice little piece foreshadowing about the plot of that episode. Anyway, great to see you guys had such a good time with the series over 20 years after it came out!

    damn i hoped we had patreon at this time so we would have an uncut version for this :)
    the intro is the most amazing thing ever, it looks like an uncut walk trough the whole ship, BUT there is a "hidden" cut in the middle, because the set of the ship are 2 parts, the upper and lower decks so they had to do a hidden cut as they are not connected :)
    still the intro is SOOO good it makes you feel how the ship is as you can see it all in a walkdown and you now feel how small or big it is :)
    also the explanation that its a star system and they left from earth and this star system has alot of planets but its all inside ONE system ... this explenation would have been nice for the series honestly xD

      I was going to add the same comment. Like what we saw in the series pilot, Mal gets less fun & more pessimistic when life gets more difficult.
      JUST TO ADD: From strictly the social perspective, If the crew are looked at as a family, then Mal is Dad and Inara was always Mom. Inara leaving the crew also affected Mal negatively - making him even more grumpy.

    I can't find it any more, but I read an honest-to-god essay about Sheppard book called "Not Very Christian Of Me". Essentially, it posits that the Sheppard's past isn't really important. What's important is what he's looking for.
    He became a priest, a life of rule and order because he's looking to make sense of the universe, and ultimately to find certainty and order.
    In the first episode we meet him he's trying to lay down the law, decide who's right and wrong and swearing to protect people, but it doesn't work. The man he swears to protect is the villain and is killed by Mal, and Book isn't even sure he's wrong to do it. All he finds on Serenity is grey area, nuance and uncertainty and he finds himself slipping back into older, less savoury mindsets as again he's failing to follow the rules - getting into violence, talking about Shan Yu and River's mind reading of him.
    Eventually he leaves Serenity to pursue a simpler life, as we see him in the movie.
    I'm assuming you have already watched the whole movie? I don't want to spoil anything.

    as much as you were impressed by the ways in which the budget was boosted, there was actually one big cut -- the chinese. the show had accurate written chinese in the backgrounds as well as chinese lines (tho the cast struggled to deliver them), all the product of professional translation. for the movie, someone randomly copied and pasted a bunch of "asian-looking characters", none of it has any actual meaning, and there are no chinese lines.

    The production cost for the tv series was around $1M/ep (some stuff like sets and costumes get amoritized over the entire run) so the orginal Firefly show cost about $15-20M for a runtime of over 10 hours. Serenity had a budget of $39M for a run time of just under 2 hours. Thats why you see such a quality difference.

    Guys.
    I've paused you at 2:05 so I can go and settle my cat down - I just FREAKED him the heck out, by jumping out of my chair and shouting *YES*
    I'm so happy.
    There are conflicting comments here around watching the Buffy movie beforehand or not, I'm adding my vote to the 'not' side. It sets up similarly but some aspects don't carry across, others are done completely differently, and the rest should be allowed to rest in peace. *My* opinion, is to let the show be itself, and if you're curious, watch the movie later. That way your experience of the movie won't flavor your view of the show.
    Hopefully, you've caught the *UNANIMOUS* opinion of Buffy fans who entreat you to avoid the 'remastered' episodes, and instead watch the older version. The difference is profound, and is an awful change.
    Onto Serenity.
    Thank you for pausing halfway and having that brief discussion, it's something I didn't know I wanted - and now I need it from every reactor ever - hearing your thoughts and theories as the movie is underway is fantastic, and because you've paused it, the conversation isn't being had over events on the screen causing you to miss vital things. Perfection. Love it. Brilliant. Do it more.

    The entire series of 'Firefly', is based on the stated belief that Simon had no idea what the Alliance Government did to River, or that he was unaware that she was a psychic, trained for combat. That is totally tossed aside within the first few scenes where Simon infiltrated the facility and rescued her. He knew full well of these things.

    Hey guys, just so you know, there are two blooper reels, one from the T.V. show and the other from the movie. Hey Joe - Since you're a Nathan fan, you just have to check out a couple more TH-cam videos; perhaps you and your friends can even do reaction videos (?). The first one is titled "Dr Horrible's Sing-Along Blog." It's another masterpiece from Joss Whedon, it's hilarious, and it's only about 40 minutes in length. The second video I'm recommending is "Uncharted: A Fan Film." Everyone wanted Nathan Fillion to play Nathan Drake in the "Uncharted" film, so this fan film gives everyone an idea as to how the movie would have turned out if Fillion had been cast; Oh, and it's only about fourteen minutes.

    Thanks for doing the two parter. Looking forward to Buffy. The first 3 seasons are my favorite. I watched this show as a teenager as it aired. I've rewatched it too many times to count. As others are saying, please watch the original version not the remastered. It's not better.
    Please don't watch the movie Buffy the Vampire Slayer 1992 before watching the tv show. It's absolutely nothing like the show. I think it will give you wrong expectations of the show. Maybe if enough people want you to, watch it between seasons 1 and 2? I'm never watching it again personally. It's like those parody movies made after actual good movies.

Of course, assuming you watched the whole thing at once, you know that the pace of events only increases as the movie continues. I can't wait till Sunday to see you watching the second half. We all enjoy watching you almost as much as you enjoy watching the movie.

    If Kaylee looks a little different - she didn't have to regain the extra pounds they wanted her to have for the show.

    • @derrisreaditbefore
      @derrisreaditbefore ปีที่แล้ว

      Right? I do like the reason for it though, Joss wanted to subliminally tell the audience that Kaylee made the most of life, taking all the joys it offers, good food, bad men, full friendships...

  • @Teeklin
    @Teeklin ปีที่แล้ว +1

    Couldn't make a better decision than moving on to Buffy if you guys enjoyed Firefly. Keep in mind the first season was a midseason replacement with a suuuuuper limited budget and it doesn't really hit its stride until season 2 when it gets a budget and staff! Still even the first season is a fun ride, just doesn't really hit Firefly levels of quality with every episode being a banger until a little bit later on.
    Thanks for the great ride with the Firefly reactions!

    There was a 3 part comic, "Serenity-Those left behind" IIRC, that tells a little of what happened in between the show and the film.
    Excited for the Buffy viewing, though there's some jumping around required after season 3. Worry about that later then.
    Also, just a head's up on Buffy season 1. It was a "mid-season replacement" for a canceled show, so there are only 13 episodes in season one and it does kinda give a "monster of the week" vibe. Patience. It's not bad at all, but really takes off with season 2.
    Another side note as it appears you guys enjoy Nathan Fillion and Joss, during the writer's strike several years back, Joss wrote something "for the internet" as writing for tv/film wasn't allowed. It's 42 minutes of every emotion in the book. Easily searched on youtube, "Doctor Horrible's Sing-along-Blog". link: th-cam.com/video/Of9kHpCv1ts/w-d-xo.html

    Is this too early to explain the Jayne/River shipping fan fiction? From Jayne's side it is easy. She is a willing woman. From her side, consider she had a crush on him since Ariel where she asked him "copper for a kiss" when she woke up despite him planning on turning her in for the reward. And you can't sneak up on a psychic if you think. Jayne sneaked up behind her in the bar because he doesn't think in combat, he reacts. It's not objectionable to her and keeps a potential weakness covered. BTW, more of Inara's story in the deleted scenes. You know, not much, but some. Oh, not to Spoil Buffy, but in Firefly season 2 in an opening bar scene Mal was going to meet Spike, just to make everyone gasp that this is the Bufffy-verse future.

    In my opinion, Mr. Universe was the one mistake Joss made with this movie. He reads like an easy shortcut out of a writing dead-end. And giving his death the same wait before the end credits as Wash and Book was stupid.

    You might want to pre-start the Buffy series by watching the movie first. It sort of sets up the character and some of the back story. It is a bit different with a young Kristy Swanson as Buffy and with Donald Sutherland and the PeeWee Herman actor (Paul Rubens?) in supporting parts.

      I delayed watching the TV show because the movie was so bad. I only started because friends told me that it was worth my time. And it was.
      The show does a decent job of introducing the character all by itself.
