My biggest mistake was moving and not setting my tank back up. It was because of a bad breakup and I was in a dark place. 3 years later i got back into the hobby (about a year ago) and forgot how much joy it brings to my life.
I want to thank all of you guys and gals who take the time to make these videos and teach people how to have success in this hobby. Without you guys I wouldn't have ever experienced the joy of reefing. So thank you!

This was the first time I’ve ever heard of vinegar expanding the magnets inside power heads. Thank you so much, this explains so many pumps and power heads going bad on me. 🤩👍🏽

A very helpful video especially for beginners. A lot of times we see other people's successful reef tanks and think to ourselves, "How hard can it be?" and go about setting up one, only to end up in heartache and frustration because of newbie mistakes. It's good practice that newbies have a checklist and stick to it. That way you're less likely to miss out on anything that can potentially cause a disaster in your tanks. Maybe you can do a video on having a comprehensive checklist?
Watching this video reinforce in me the reasons why i'm sticking to freshwater aquariums even after almost 4 decades of fish keeping and a few years of watching your videos. Saltwater is just too much of a hassle!

My biggest mistake: I had a large Sea Apple get sucked into a power head. Not only did the toxin kill every fish in my tank, it also made me very sick because I cleaned up the mess without wearing any gloves.

Loved this! I was given my very first tank by a friend who had badly neglected it. My biggest mistake was believing them when they said the floating combination thermometer/hydrometer was “accurate.” It floated at the 1.025 line when the salinity was actually 1.038. No wonder the single tiny clownfish was so vicious, poor little guy was burning up. So people: USE A REFRACTOMETER when you’re just starting....😁

It's nice hearing tips from other hobbyist and meeting some I didn't know about until today. BRS asked people to leave tips on products they were showcasing that day , durning their 10 day black friday sale. Made sure to write some down, as well as afew I've heard from other TH-camrs. Its definitely nice to have a list of things not to do, but I'll also admit at times it's also scared me away from trying new products after hearing so many horror stories.

This is a great video and I have made a couple of the mistakes that were talked about. I think my biggest mistake though was when I bought a reef safe epoxy to attach frag plugs to rock in my little 5 gallon nano. I will never use that brand of reef epoxy again as it literally killed all of the coral in my little tank.

Make sure your clean up crew is compatible with other animals in your tank. I was getting back into the hobby after a hiatus and I added 5 sally light foot crabs, 3 emerald crabs, an arrow crab, a peppermint shrimp, and a pistol shrimp. The crabs all killed each other, the pistol shrimp killed the arrow crab and one of my fish killed the peppermint shrimp. Ammonia slowly started to build up and I had a massive nitrate spike.

  • @drewjanes307
    @drewjanes307 5 ปีที่แล้ว +1

yup to lights frying my chalice and large favia colony, yes to flooding house with RODI water 3-4 times in a year lol, yes to adding a unquarentened monti which in turn wiped out all 4 colonies... I ask myself why I do this hobby everyday, I just love the coral and fish. now I'm very picky with what goes in.

Hello Jake_of_the_Jungle 98 , well, there’re a lot of diseases that can kill your fishes. If you introduce any of this disease to your system you will need to go fallow (fishless) for a period of 6 weeks (for Brooklynella) or 76 days for Marine Ich. So just imagine it :)

My biggest mistake/regret is not knowing about all the different hitchhikers that come on coral, I didn't know what a vermetid snail was until they completely overran my 125 gallon tank. Black needle like tubes growing everywhere with their feeder webs that irritate and starve your coral. Had to start my tank all over again to completely get rid of them. Dipping doesn't get rid of them so quarantining coral is essential to protect you against this pest.

I have two. One was when I had a little 20g reef...not much to it, I was a total beginner. I got a huge tank and filled it up. Well, we didn't trust it because the middle brace was broken. So I started using the water from it to change my 20g. There was the used sand in the big one, but it didn't even occur to me that it might be a problem. My phosphate and nitrate shot through the roof and i had a massive, really thick pelagic algae bloom that lasted weeks despite several water changes. Most of my corals died. The next major one was...that was my 50g. I had just moved a few days before and i was exhausted, so I wasn't really thinking. I accidentally used two denitrifying bacteria products the same night. By morning, every fish was dead, including my beloved Spike, a mandarin dragonet I had trained. EDIT: Actually, I have three, though thankfully this one didn't end in the disaster it could have. Never leave your power strips on the floor, especially if it doesn't have GFCI (mine didn't.) I tripped coming to fill up the tank and almost dumped five gallons of saltwater right on the power strip. That one could have killed me. Mount the damn things.

I always fill my rodi right next to the sump because I installed the RODI system next to the sump... in fact my waste water directly feeds into the basement sump and is pumped out of the house. If I forget... the RODI water goes down the sump too, but I don't have a flooded house. ;-) . In short do the RODI stuff next to the basement sump if you have one.

Yup. Here’s mine. Just starting adding corals and believed my nutrients needed lowered (while testing using api). Added purigen to a filter, chaeto to fuge, a few new cuc, and corals. After a week or so noticed no algae on glass. The next week chaeto died. Day after noticed algae on sand that disappeared when the lights were out. I flipped my nutrients so fast, dinos arose.

Great video! After heairng what aqua man said about his torches made me wonder if thats why I lost 3/4 of my corals! I got over over zealous and ordered to many corals on ebay auctions and a lot of them were delivered in a bad way! i had 5 torches as well but trying to save the dying ones is maybe what caused the tank to basically crash! I wish now I would have just thrown out the dying ones because I even lost old established corals! I had just spent over 3k down the drain to save the sick ones and from what I heard now is that dying corals release toxins! Never again! My other stupid thing was cleaning tank and water level got below some frags on a rack and the light fried them all and those were some that had made it until I fried them! LOL I got lucky when my used heater went out and saw my fish frantically swimming and caught it but from then on I use several low watt heaters in case that ever happens again!! Good thing I didn't have corals yet with the heater incident!

For me it would be trusting my LFS salt water. The alkalinity was off and the salt mix they use is supposedly at 11dkh, but the water I got was at 7dkh.

Do I really need a sump on my 30gallon tank? I’m using a tidal 55 OTB

I started off without one, but the water change requirements drove me crazy so I ended up adding one just to get some more time between water changes. From what I've seen from TH-cam reefing channels, you can run nano sized tanks without sumps and skimmers, but water changes have to be your new religion.

My biggest mistake.. invest in a good lighting mount. 4 years ago I had an exspensive led light hanging over my 40breeder, being held up by 1/2 pvc.. let's just say its panic when one of those drops in your tank...

Didn’t read all the comments to see if this is already there but how many have turned on a doser to bleed off the air and forgot to turn it off. Added a gallon of alk mix to 100 gal tank over night. And then had to start over after 90% of my tank died.

My biggest mistakes were not using ro/di and thinking my tank would be ok if I used an auto feeder while I was gone for a 2 week vacation. Came back to see algae everywhere and some corals dead

My biggest mistake is not doing my own research when buying from my LFS, don't get me wrong, there are a couple of well informed employees, but there are a couple who will sale a beginner for pro only fish.
