@@SuperMovieLvr933 Yes they use actual animatronic tech in the tokyo beauty and the beast! And i disagree they have an odd glow and the faces are a different color than the rest of the animatronic
@@SuperMovieLvr933 The reasons projections almost always look off in recordings is that usually the cameras recording don't have the proper frame rate, lens length, and/or other various settings set correctly. The frame rates are often purposefully made off on the projections by the creators to make it nearly impossible to copy them on unauthorized recordings clearly (basically built in copyright protections). The other issues are usually just caused by lack of knowledge or ability. Basically, the projections are specifically designed to be seen clearly by the naked eye in the specific lighting situation they are currently in. I honestly prefer true animatronics as well but I do see why they do not use them as often on rides anymore, the maintenance on the smaller parts that make up facial features is far more intense and difficult to get to than the larger parts that make up the rest of the body.

Raud-Jacoba Bearsch I agree with you completely. Maelstrom was one of my favorite rides, Norway was my favorite pavilion. When I heard that it would be replaced by an (in my opinion) overhyped IP, my heart broke.
While I'd rather see real history unfortunately this is the way epcot is going. And on the Denmark thing they didnt pony up the money and Norway did why would they have kept it Denmark.
My mother was a Dane and we grew up thinking anything that came from Denmark was great. I enjoyed the Maelstrom ride as well and really love the original intent of the world showcase. In reality though, most travelers to WDW are not huge fans and don't always have a lot of nostalgia for the old rides and original content. You think it is easier to convince a family to spend thousands of dollars to travel to WDW to see Maelstrom or a ride based on the movie their daughter has watched 50 times? It is the festivals at Epcot and the updates like this that keep the park open. I wish it weren't so but it is seems the way it works. Now if we could only get an update to the Imagination pavilion that returns that ride to its former glory.
Every time you make a video about something from Epcot, I feel a little sad. The park is rather neglected and it's mission statement seemed to die with the 20th century. Give it a couple years and it probably won't be named Epcot anymore.
@@shonefob The new things have very little to do with what Epcot was founded on. Even then, the new things are more like a coat of paint on a rusty pipe rather than a new pipe.
Worked at disney for about a year, and went on this ride NUMEROUS times, at least 30-40 times, and I NEVER knew that one troll was just chilling there are you go backwards from the 3 headed troll
Just another casualty of how EPCOT has changed from being about OUR future and about bringing cultures together, to just another Disney ride where they have to have movie tie-ins for everything.
Epcot of old wasn't what Epcot was intended to be. Epcot has a few neat rides, pubs and restaurants. Aside from that Epcot is boring, bunch of educational nonsense.
@@SuperMovieLvr933 ummmm all of disney is education? All of the themed rides tell a story from beginning to end minus a few like its a small world (even though that ride teaches you that the world is small and that although we are different we are all the same).
@@tylershepard4879 Please do. I was trying to think of more off the top of my head. Oh yeah and Journey into your imagination with figment, Disneyland Paris (mostly for its financial loss), Disney Studios Park, and Disney MGM Studios.
I wasn't surprised by Disney making a frozen ride but I am surprised that they would replace a ride. 1) The original ride seemed really cool and obviously had a lot of fans. It was also rooted deeply in the culture of Norway 2) Frozen was such a hit, I find it quite shocking that Disney would decide that it was not worthy of a whole new, original concept. And to replace a ride that actually looked quite popular and thrilling.
I really appreciate the attitude you have of this ride. I miss Maelstrom like crazy, and I agree that the whole "turn World Showcase into IP Land" thing is awful, but I think it's a fine ride for what it is. It's nice to hear someone not just berate it because it's Frozen :)
Glad to hear someone else shares the same view :) Like I said, I just can't get behind the whole "I Hate Frozen Ride" mindset. Yeah, I really do miss Maelstrom, and I also have a HUGE problem with turning the World Showcase into a bunch of IPs, but I find Frozen Ever After just too dang enchanting to get too upset. And they keep enough nods to the original that it's obvious they wanted to be respectful of it's past.
Frozen deserves to be berated because it's a horrible and overrated Disney movie! It really didn't deserve to take over the Norway Pavilion and replace Maelstrom!
I find myself wondering more and more if the "Three Caballeros" makeover for Mexico was them testing to see just how much outrage there'd be if they started inserting IP into the countries in a big way. :-/
I rode this ride for the first and only time back in 2013 thanks to Some Jerk With A Camera praising it so much in his videos. He did it to basically give it some love before it was replaced by a Frozen ride (and keep in mind he said that LONG before the film even came out), and I’m glad he did, it had a lot of charm to it.
Really weird to see Joe Rohde without is signature not-up-to-Disney-standards-of-grooming ear thingie. Anywho, I've said this before to many friends - Maelstrom will always be a more popular ride in death than it was in life, mainly because of what it was replaced by. People mad about a Disney IP taking it's place really should have been paying attention prior to it. That ship sailed when Aladdin and Jasmine started showing up in Morocco, or Snow White in Germany, or Belle in France, etc. Or maybe the Living Seas with Nemo and Friends? Corporation and government sponsorships moved out of Epcot - Disney filled the void. That said, I'll always miss Giant Cruise Ship Director Mural Lady. RIP in peace.
Heck, even before they ended up going with Nemo and Friends, there were plans to bring in the Little Mermaid to the Living Seas. EPCOT simply wasn't as popular (and thus profitable) as Disney had thought it would be when they built it, and bringing in Disney characters (you know, the stuff people actually go to Disney World for) was the obvious solution.
Sad to see Maelstrom go, it always held a special place in my heart as the first ride I rode at Disney World. Our plane landed in the evening and Magic Kindom was closing soon and it would've been a waste but Epcot was open late so we went there. They didn't have Test Track yet, so we went to what seemed to be the only thrill ride in Epcot. Maelstrom was hardly a thriller but at least that meant my grandparents could ride with us. They tended to sit out a lot of rides obviously but Maelstrom and the boat ride at the Mexico pavilion (the second ride we got on) we had the whole family riding. I always loved when the troll sent you "back over the falls" even if it wasn't really that scary.
I had a love/hate feeling about this ride. I thought it was really short and mediocre overall but always had to ride it. I definitely miss it now that it's gone though. The oil rig scene was fantastic. It really felt like you were on the ocean on a cold Norwegian night. I'm not a fan of Frozen.
My best friend is Norwegian American and growing up, she used to tell me all about this ride, how much she loved it, how much it meant to her and how one day, she was going to take me to Epcot and we were going to ride it together (she grew up with annual Disney passes and I had never been to Epcot). By the time we finally got to go together, it was summer 2016 and we couldn’t bring ourselves to get on the Frozen version. I’ll always be heartbroken that I never got to experience this one.
Here's my question, who from Norway thought an oil rig was a great thing to add into a ride about their country? Seriously, who would want to spend money to go to a country to see an oil rig of all things?
I rode Maelstrom SO many times when I was in the WDW College Program at EPCOT. I was in the Tapestry of Nations parade, and our base was behind Norway and Mexico. So I spent a lot of time in that area of the park!
I am Swedish and have fond childhood memories of riding Maelstrom as a boy, being sprayed with water and hearing the troll yell “OVER THE FALLS!!” My own kids want to visit Disney and love Frozen, but they will never get to experience the original ride; it makes me depressed. Thank you for telling this story.
Thank you for this video, I haven't been back to Disney World to see the Frozen version, and probably never will, but Maelstrom will forever be the one reason I would have visited Norway, it was that good!
This made me miss Maelstrom big time 😨 Frozen is ok but Maelstrom was definitely better. I agree with you that the movie characters shouldn’t be in world showcase (unless it the three caballeros lol) I never knew about the crazy storm ending!! That would have been so cool but I can see why they decided not to do that haha
Sick af been sitting at home binge watching your videos i was pissed when i went to disney 2 years ago and realised they replaced maelstrom it was one of my favorite rides at the park when i was a kid.
I remember Maelstrom being one of my favorite Epcot rides as a kid, although for the longest time I just called it "that Viking ride with the trolls in it," honestly though, when I heard about the Frozen thing, it didn't really surprise or upset me too much. Frozen was a gigantic hit (and, over-saturated or no, it is a damn good movie), so the higher ups probobly demanded they do something with it, and of all the things to do that with, Maelstrom was the most logical fit. It sucks that Epcot has gone the way of just being another Disney park, as opposed to being a showcase of futurism, technology, and the worlds shared culture (y'know an Experimental Prototype Cmmunity Of Tommorow...), but that's modern Disney for ya, it is what it is.
Maelstrom was interesting because when we went to EPCOT it was the only thing we had to cross of the list (we are from the west coast so this one of the only times we would hit Disney World rather than Disneyland) My mom was so fascinated by the ride/pavilion because she dated a guy from Norway prior to meeting my dad. She knew so much about Norwegian culture so she wanted to make sure us kids learned about it while we were there. I don't remember a lot about that trip, especially EPCOT, but I remember the trolls in Maelstrom being so cool and my mom teaching us so much about it before. I'm glad to see it covered here! Keep up the great work!
When i went on the Backstage Magic tour in February of 2017, the standing polar bear was placed in central shops along the tour route, and one guest on the tour was picked to press a button to make it roar and move its front legs. It was really cool- I’m glad that some of the old animatronics still survive!!
When my family first rode Maelstrom in 2009, we were blown away by the artwork on the walls in the queue, bc there was a portrait of a welder who was the SPITTING IMAGE of my father!! It was amazing and hilarious considering he’s a welder, too 😂 A few years later we got to go back to see him again, but the whole ride was transformed into Frozen by that point. We were very very disappointed. 😞
I understand that the Frozen ride is not a bad ride, but it feels like it was a rushed project. There were a lot of parts that just had little animated snowflakes on the wall, and it wasn’t very cohesive... I got there early in the morning and only waited 10 minutes, but I would have been disappointed if I waited that 3 hour line for it TvT
Amber Rousseau I had to wait 3h in line and I’m still disappointed about it, I was super excited to finally see it, I do love frozen (except for Olaf) so I wanted to see it but it’s really nothing special...
I’m so glad I got to go on Maelstrom back in 2011 before it became a Frozen ride. I have some mixed emotions on it, though I wonder if people criticizing it for being a movie tie-in also criticize the ride in the Mexico pavilion for being a movie tie-in as well. Or perhaps that pavilion doesn’t matter as much. Either way, I do love Frozen but I miss Maelstrom and would have loved to get to go on it one more time.
I remember this ride so well! Thank you for covering it!!! The oneeeee nit-picky thing is at 16:26, you said “Ana” casts a spell, when it should have been Elsa. Otherwise, very well done as always and immensely appreciated!!!
I miss that ride! When I first visited Disney world in 2006ish, I loved Epcot most of all. I remember getting off the maelstrom ride and seeing that giant troll in the gift shop. My grandma had those trolls. Legend has it one of my uncles brought back a set from his honeymoon sometime in the 70s and my grandma was ***offended***. She thought they were an ugly insult. They were hidden away and I always loved to find them. I, however, loved them for whatever reason. I loved to look at them as a child, because they were so odd. I hadnt seen or thought about them for years. Seeing them again made me weep 🤣 her hate of them made me smile with affection for them. I agree with everyone though. I wish they didn't need tie ins for everything. Especially the world showcase. The food and culture was always more than enough
Every time my family went to Epcot, it was an unspoken rule that we HAD to ride Maelstrom. We saw it as an excuse to escape the Florida heat and we found the ride to be disappointing at best, but over the years, we've grown quite fond of it. The line was always short and it wasn't as thrilling, but the story it told was such an amazing telling of Norwegian culture that it grew on my family. We were so sad and disappointed that it was replaced with a simple rehash of the Frozen movie and our short wait time grew to an hour. The ride was no longer a tradition. Maelstrom was so special to me and my family and it will always be remembered in our hearts. The new animatronics are cool, though.
I love how even when I think I know a decent amount about a ride or attraction, I'm totally proven wrong and shown these mind-blowing effects and aspects that would get shut down early in the attractions' life cycles.
This was my favorite ride to go on with my father when I was little. We were so sad when we went back to Disney World recently and found that frozen replaced it.
I want to thank you for these vids. I have never been, and probably never will get to go, to any of these parks. I really love the chance to see some of the iconic attractions and their newer incarnations as well as getting some great background and history! Thanks so much and please keep them coming!
I know people look at what happened to Maelstrom as shameful because "It's a PR jig to pull people into the Norway" but I always take it more insulting as a Norwegian myself who has never been to my ancestral homelands in Scandinavia. When I went there for the first time back on '05, and my second and last time in '08, watching the "Spirit of Norway" video at the end always touched something in my soul, connecting me to my heritage that now is removed for a beaten pulp that once was a dead horse that even the little girls that watched Frozen in theaters call 'overdone.'

Apparently No, because otherwise you wouldn't be so close minded. Either that or you're one of those pricks who believe that if someone dares move to another ountry despite loving their home that they're a traitor to their own home land. Just because they don't live in their home country doesn't mean it isn't their home. Even if they had to leave it because of circumstances. Source, I'm a South African expat who had to move because of the stock market crash. And I've been living between South Africa and the Far East for almost 11 years. So, technically by your logic, I'm not a "real" South African either, because I didn't stay in South Africa. Even if me and my family would've lost everything and starved to death because the industry my family was in went to jackshit because it was the bloody stock market crash. Which ofcourse meant we had to find work else where. But even then we stayed loyal to our country and still loved her as much as anyone else born a South African, whether it be on South African soil or to South African parents. Same with this person, you never know their story and how he ended up there, but if he's born on Norwegian soil and/or to Norwegian parents, he's a Norwegian. Regardless of if he grew up in Norway or not. I mean, he definitely loves his country as his own, and loves it as much as anyone else on Norwegian soil. I can definitely see that. The love you can have for your home is one that is unique and indescribable. But just because he doesn't know as much as you about his home doesn't mean he should be denied the right to love it and claim it as his home.
I've never even been to Disney at all but when the narrator says "You may not be the first, but you certainly will be the last" and the whole crowd just all sound so sad I WANTED TO CRY
I have so many memories attached to so many of these attractions that are now gone. Especially now that my mom passed away and my father is estranged, I miss all those vacations and wish I could share with them my sadness over things being closed. The last time I was able to go to Disney was in 2006, so I'm especially sad I didn't get to ride Maelstrom one last time!
When I was a kid, I referred to this ride as "The Tricky Trolls." Whenever we went to epcot, I bolted towards Norway to ride this multiple times. And I loved the film they showed at the end. Afterwards I'd drag my parents to look at the super expensive ski jackets in the gift shop, and jump around on the longboat outside until someone yelled at me for climbing the serpent neck.
BOO Intellectual Properties! That isn't what Walt or Roy wanted for EPCOT! The Troll scared me as a kid, but in the kind of way where you can't stop looking at it
I loved that ride so much I haven’t been to Disney World since I was 7 but that was my favorite ride in Epcot I’m not prepared for the next time I go and it’s not there anymore. It’s not that Frozen looks bad cause it looks like a good ride but Maelstrom from what I remembered was wayy better. Great video again!
This was one of the hardest rides to see close since it was very special to my family who rode it each time we went to EPCOT. Considering the spectacular work imagineers can do I feel like a Frozen attraction could have still held the spirit of EPCOT in representing different cultures yet they just chose a complete cash in on the Frozen IP. The ride itself is a very good dark flume ride but it lacks the charm and also the original spirit of EPCOTs vision, yet that is an increasing trend in recent years at that park...
I haven't been to Disney World for 20 years, and Maelstorm was one of my favorite rides. However, I don't think I'll care if the scenery was changed. The main thing I liked was the Viking boats and going downhill backwards.
One of my absolute favorite Disney rides, in my favorite park. Made my parents go on this ride over and over again. 7 year old me liked to think I was Viking warrior princess... Haven't been to Disney or Epcot in years, so I am sad to hear it's gone. Thanks for posting and letting me relive happy childhood memories. :-)
I literally cry every time one of my favorite childhood rides go... I just remember me and my siblings and friends after the maelstrom ride go a dress up in those Viking costumes, Anyone else remember those?
Thanks for the memories. I had forgotten some of the details, like how absolutely awesome it was when the Viking boat went under the drilling platform in the middle of a storm.

It's okay, I miss Snow White's Scary Adventures WDW the way you miss Maelstrom at Epcot. Can't beat the rides we all grew up with. And yes the snow White minecart ride is great but there was a nostalgic magic to the old ride that told the story beautifully.
What is sad is I don’t even remember the original Snow White ride... because I was so young.. and they got rid of it because little kids were scared of it..... I was never scared of it...
@@averygaitens. Oh it gave me nightmares when I was little, but the idea that it got replaced by a boutique for kids? Just makes me feel like the park is emptier in result.
To be honest, never rode this attraction so I have no opinions, but I can understand why people would be upset. It would be like removing a iconic attraction at Disneyland for something new which had been considered a few times by Disney imagineers. The haunted mansion was considered to be removed to change New Orleans Square into a Pirate's theme area which fans fought tooth and nail to keep the mansion in its proper place. So I understand completely why fans would be upset. Yet, Disney has said that the park is not meant to be a museum. It's meant to grow and change...for the better or worse.
No Disney is NOT meant to grow and change. Disney actually IS a museum and needs to be treated as a national monument on par with the Statue of Liberty and Mount Rushmore. "Change" needs to be a four letter word at Disney.
@@mindyschocolate No he's not right and Walt's dead so who cares if it doesn't change? They could've stopped building in the mid 80s and I'd still go. Changing Maelstrom to Frozen may have been bad, but it definitely wasn't as controversial a change as turning Disneyland California's Tower of Terror into the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. With maelstrom's change, they took a ride that Disney isn't completely known for and changed it, so it isn't as bad.

Yay, I wasn't the only one who noticed that. It was sad to walk through the Norway pavilion when I visited in June 2015. I only went on the ride a few times during my first 2 visits to Disney World (1996 and again in 1999). I actually enjoyed Maelstrom more than Pirates of the Caribbean (yes I said it). Maelstrom was one of my favorite rides and also one of my favorite memories of Epcot.
I really miss maelstrom and despite not enjoying frozen at all, mostly due to fact it is not at all one of Disney's best films, objectively speaking the replacement is a good ride. It's just not as fun as maelstrom for me. I hate it essentially sealed the fate of Epcot, my personal favorite park. I've never been an edutainment/education over entertainment kind of person, but I still love the real entire concept of the Epcot park...I do not look forward to the coming years at all...

This makes me miss Maelstrom so much.
Every time you make a video about something from Epcot, I feel a little sad. The park is rather neglected and it's mission statement seemed to die with the 20th century. Give it a couple years and it probably won't be named Epcot anymore.
@@gettabun I feel like a lot of good attractions and rides are being turned into character spots. Its so sad...

@@hollyleaf143productions8 How can you be sad it's neglected and sad that they are putting money and new things into it?

Just another casualty of how EPCOT has changed from being about OUR future and about bringing cultures together, to just another Disney ride where they have to have movie tie-ins for everything.
Epcot of old wasn't what Epcot was intended to be.
Epcot has a few neat rides, pubs and restaurants.
Aside from that Epcot is boring,

If changing Epcot to be about fun instead educational is what they're going for then about damn time.

I wasn't surprised by Disney making a frozen ride but I am surprised that they would replace a ride.
1) The original ride seemed really cool and obviously had a lot of fans. It was also rooted deeply in the culture of Norway
2) Frozen was such a hit, I find it quite shocking that Disney would decide that it was not worthy of a whole new, original concept.

1992disney It’s a very popular movie that made millions for Disney that is based in Norway. It doesnt deserve it because you don’t like it?

I rode this ride for the first and only time back in 2013 thanks to Some Jerk With A Camera praising it so much in his videos. He did it to basically give it some love before it was replaced by a Frozen ride (and keep in mind he said that LONG before the film even came out), and I’m glad he did, it had a lot of charm to it.

Matthew Chenault whoah I did not realize that was the same dude,
Heck, even before they ended up going with Nemo and Friends, there were plans to bring in the Little Mermaid to the Living Seas. EPCOT simply wasn't as popular (and thus profitable) as Disney had thought it would be when they built it, and bringing in Disney characters (you know, the stuff people actually go to Disney World for) was the obvious solution.
Layne yup which will get worse as he ages

I remember riding this as a kid (probably '89 or so), and those trolls friggin' TERRIFIED me.
Ditto.. What they HAD was far more representative of what EPCOT ought to be.

Whoooooo new video! Hi Mark!
“Anna would cast a spell.”
Now it’s been awhile since I watched Frozen, but the last time I checked that was Elsa.
Pinned comment dude.
You’re right it is Elsa he just got the names mixed up
She’s right there, yet the media and populace seem to focus on that witch
Exactly!!!
I thought it was awesome! I prefer this version.
I did.. (3 hours) . I was .. (disappointed).
its also always broken. It was broken almost the entire day we were there and I even had a fast pass for it. They say it stays broken

I know people look at what happened to Maelstrom as shameful because "It's a PR jig to pull people into the Norway" but I always take it more insulting as a Norwegian myself who has never been to my ancestral homelands in Scandinavia.
When I went there for the first time back on '05, and my second and last time in '08, watching the "Spirit of Norway" video at the end always touched something in my soul, connecting me to my heritage that now is removed for a beaten pulp that once was a dead horse that even the little girls that watched Frozen in theaters call 'overdone.'
stormhawkdude I am disappointed too, I liked it when Epcot was all about learning about cultures and I truly think that deeply taught a lot.

@@hedgehog3180 uh. Dude. You do realise there's such a thing as um...I don't know, immigrants? Expats? People who were born on their country's soil but had to move for one reason or another? Right?

"Change" needs to be a four letter word at Disney.
stanfordite he’s right though. Disney himself said Disneyland would never be finished. It would always be changing.
@@mindyschocolate No he's not right and Walt's dead so who cares if it doesn't change? They could've stopped building in the mid 80s and I'd still go. Do you even realize that Disney can survive on its name alone? Changing Maelstrom to Frozen may have been bad, but it definitely wasn't as controversial a change as turning Disneyland California's Tower of Terror into the Guardians of the Galaxy ride. With maelstrom's change, they took a ride that Disney isn't completely known for and changed it, so it isn't as bad.

A truly great nostalgia-trip, coming from someone who worked there and was part of the very last boat trip(it closed in 2014 btw, not 2015 but that's fine!). Thank you so much for covering Maelstrom!
