  • This is the story of the rise, fall and return of black rhino to the wilds of Gonarezhou National Park in Zimbabwe.
Gonarezhou National Park has twice lost its black rhino population due to human intervention. The area’s indigenous black rhino population was hunted into local extinction in the 1930s; in the early 1970s a second population was reintroduced but was completely poached by 1994.
After a thirty year absence, black rhino returned to the wilds of Gonarezhou in 2021. This is a story about hope, about the relationship between people and wilderness, and about evaluating the worth of a wild landscape. Through persistence, collaboration and belief, a much needed foothold is claimed for the critically endangered black rhino species - and a wild landscape endures.

Such an amazing, emotional but heart warming viewing. The Park is absolutely breath taking. And so so huge. The number of rangers employed to protect the park and its wildlife is large and sufficient. Here is hoping the rhinos really thrive and reproduce. Love to go and visit and see for myself..:-)) one day soon....

When Europeans came to Africa, it was teeming with wild animals. Humans and their nature were in balance. There 10 million elephants roaming freely. In less than 40 years, Europeans had done what they did to the north American bison, and almost wiped out our wildlife. This is when some of them started taking the land Africans had always owned and reserving it for wild animals, so that they could have animals to satisfy their thirst for killing in future. What you see are a people who are possessive of the wildlife of the people of Africa. They do not give a damn about anything else in the economy. In fact, they work with the kind in the west to sabotage any attempt by Africans to ameliorate their conditions. This is not about altruism, but the same old desire to steal African land and its natural resources. What these people need to do is to pack up and go to that heaven called Europe. We will fix Africa, whatever way WE decide. We do not come to their land to run their wildlife, and they should not come to ours with such desires and presumptions.

Incredibly story and incredibly shot. Truely inspiring and I hope these rhinos have a safe and happy 3rd try in gonarezhou! I’m hoping to visit the area next year. I used to be a rhino monitor in South Africa now look after the rhinos at perth zoo in Australia 😊 thanks again!

Great documentary Buck & Jo - well done and great work to everyone involved. This is another "Operation Noah" when Rupert Fothergill and team rescued the game when Kariba started filling up. You referred to this during one of your previous videos. I have seen a number of overlander / campers videos traveling to Gonarezhou and hope more will follow which will help this wild park to sustain itself.

Hello 👋 There are parallels with Operation Noah in that the DNPW (now ZimParks) was actively engaged in moving animals to safe areas (higher ground and off of islands in this case). Gonarezhou's reintroduction, however, was in order to reintroduce a species that had been locally extinct in the area, rather than rescue the rhinos from any threats in the founder population areas which was at the case with Operation Noah (currently black rhino populations in the Key 1 populations from where Gonarezhou's rhino came are stable). This country's evolving history of protected spaces is endlessly interesting and always shifting! Thanks for the support!

Operation Noah was not a good thing. You are not a Tonga, and you did not lose your land and livelihood, so shut your mouth up.

just blows my mind that this hugely successful population, similar to that in Chizarira back in the day, was decimated in the space of 5 years. The release of these rhino into Gonarezhou is an amazing achievement, and testament to what can be done with the right collaborations. I look forward to keeping an eye on both the Gonarezhou program and the Hwange National Park release under Imvelo Safaris - good luck all!

Right? it's astonishing how rapidly black rhino populations across the continent collapsed in the 80s and 90s. Happily, numbers are rising. Fingers crossed it stays that way!

@@badrabbitstudio You wiped out the rhinos in 1938. When you arrived, uninvited and unwanted, in the 19th century, our continent was a veritable paradise, with man and animal living free and in perfect balance. You wiped out our wildlife. Your presence is responsible for the reduction of the African population from 10 million when you arrived to 400 000 now

We do not need any European Noahs, we just want to be left alone. I am sure Europeans can do their good in Europe. Maybe you can use these magical powers of your to end snow and cold in your continent... Which you are actually doing with the global warming you are causing to the planet

Thank you for taking the time to share your thoughts with us Mr Nyamanza. We are glad you enjoyed it - and yes, you are quite right, Gonarezhou management has made a concerted effort to promote local communities and the development of the area. It is very exciting to see what could happen for the rest of Zimbabwe's protected areas and the people that live alongside them!

No my brother. When a thief steals and impoverishes, you do not praise him when he returns with a few sweets in his hands, to hand out to the children his stealing has caused to starve. 140 years ago, when these arrived, we were living in harmony with our wildlife. We had 10 million elephants roaming Africa, and all manner of wildlife was teeming in East and Southern Africa. Even when they disrupted the harmonious lives the Tonga had lived with nature in the Zambezi valley 65 years ago, they found the area chockfull with wild life. Today, there is nothing but water they polluting with oil and exhaust from their speed boats. The Tonga had lived with their valley for 1400 years, and it has taken these ones less than 70 years to destroy everything
