One of the BEST things I have seen on TH-cam!! I was amazed to see this is an ATK production. WHY OH WHY OH WHY do we NOT see this fine offering on Regular Television production of ATK or Cooks Country. This Pair is FAR and away better than ANY of the current "regulars' on ATK or Cook's Country! Toooooo BAD they are ATK's best kept Secret! Would LOVE to see a cook book by this Duo!

Thank you for your honest reviews: I, too, find PF Chang products and their restaurant food far too salty which to me means they are substituting salt for quality ingredients. Thank you for introducing me to "Fly by Jing" products - I'll try to find them here.

I absolutely love this format! It’s great to get both of your reactions, and I really like that you explain when it’s clearly Americanized, but still ok vs. Americanized & not good.

I usually make Trader Joe's Orange Chicken in a nonstick skillet; I find tossing the chicken and sauce together in a hot skillet adds some bitter caramel notes which improves it over the recipe on the package.

I shop at trader Joe's and I have the Mandarin orange and the dumplings in my freezer. I was going to boil them and then Brown them in a skillet as fried dumplings/potstickers. I have a container of the sauce usually given from my local Chinese place. I cherish that sauce and use it to baste pork on the grill

Thanks for the reviews! Would love to see you both try others. Personally, we like Pagoda egg rolls. They come out with a good crisp and crunch and have a nice flavor.
We don’t have a Trader Joe’s in my town. We get P.F. Chang’s kits (i.e. orange chicken, sweet and sour, etc.) and those have been ok. For orange chicken though, I will sometimes buy a package of popcorn chicken and a bottle of Panda Express’s sauce. Then I don’t have to futz with getting the batter right on a weeknight after work.

this was a fun show. now I don't feel so guilty about being a fan of the trader joe's orange chicken. I used to buy it every other shopping trip. I actually like the p.f. chang's dan dan noodles. but have to admit, I have no idea about what dan dan noodles should taste like. I will try to look for those dumplings at my store but am not sure if I've ever seen that brand in our frozen section. thanks

I'm surprised to learn that xiaolongbao are even possible as a frozen food item. Given the tendency for frozen dumplings to stick together and then break each other apart during separation, and given the importance of a leak-free exterior for this dish, it seems like a feat of engineering. The point about the thicker dough sounds right. It's probably a little bit of insurance against breakage if they stick together.
I was fortunate to enjoy xiaolongbao with nice thin dough at one of the cafeterias at Peking University.

Thanks for the info. Have loved the convenience of TJ’s orange chicken. We prefer Aldi’s Fusion brand dumplings because the skin is thin and they have two sizes one small one for wonton soup and one for pot stickers. Ideal intro to whatever Chinese meal you are having. We prefer a soy sauce slightly sweet vinegar sauce that is mixed with Sesame laced Chinese garlic sauce. Really awakens the taste buds for what comes next. Again thanks for the info. Agree that you are better off making your own Dan Dan noodles.

We’ve been through many, many brands of frozen egg rolls, most are awful, a few acceptable. But we finally found a good one. Van’s (formerly Confucius) chicken egg rolls are great. Used to be able to get them frozen at Walmart, now only refrigerated at Walmart (and Publix in the south).
Stick with the chicken, the pork ones have a funny taste, even though I normally like pork.

That was interesting! My kids like dumplings so I will try those. It's always helpful to have something good in the freezer when you can't make it to the store. I made a recipe recently that called for a bamboo steamer. I don't have one and used a wok steamer. Should I buy a bamboo steamer? How do you clean and sanitize it? Is it healthy to use? Is the bamboo sealed in anything toxic? Thank you!

I don’t mind PF Chang’s in person (not authentic, but tasty for what it is) but every frozen version that I have tried is routinely awful. I either go to Trader Joe’s or my local Asian market if I want some frozen Chinese food. You can usually get good dumplings or bao that way.

Oh no! P.F Chang's food is not good at all just like the greasy Chinese take outs here.... P.F. is either too salty, too spicy, or too overly sweet, and some of the foods in a sauce just has way too much sauce. For frozen Asian foods, I prefer Trader Joes' frozen foods, plus the different flavors of frozen fried rice at Trader Joes are also just as delicious alone. But I like adding in some fresh lightly sauted veggies, or ginger in the rice, and have that delicious orange chicken on the side🤤. For a different meal, I add in fresh shrimp, fish or fried tofu topped with a bit of oyster sauce, or toasted sesame oil for a complete meal. Try their frozen fried rice, and their tasty spring rolls, plus pot stickers, you might like them all...🙂
