    I work with snakes and sometimes they do feel threatened so they latch onto you, but usually if you stay calm and don't move the snake will let go, in my experience anyway, also pouring a tiny tiny tiny amount of any kind of alcohol into their mouths will make them let go, just have to wash their mouths out after

    Never buy a bunny from a pet shop. They didn’t even know the bunny was pregnant, and also a lot of bunny food they sell is poisonous to them, and they cannot drink from those upside down water bottles, it’s like only drops coming out, so basically they are dehydrated and dying of thirst

      Bunny drink out of water bowls just like dogs and cats, my bunny has a water bottles as an extra sorse of water but always has a bowl, please spread and nuter your rabbit, they can and are supposed to get fixed.
      Rabbit need lots of space, do not buy those tiny cages from the pet store. A hunch is good, or if you do buy a cage make sure it extra large. My bunny has a play pin with everything he needs. Rabbit requirer a lot of hay and Timothy is the best. Rabbit are very social animals and require a lot of attention and time, as much time you would give a dog or cat is what you would give to a rabbit.
      Please do your research first before getting any pet.

    • @Yummi_913
      @Yummi_913 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      @mentosfreshh if you're talking about the Petco and PetSmart cats, you CAN'T just go in there and hang out. The stores don't run that section of the store. The representing shelters do. Employees are not given those keys and you'll get bitched out if you're on the clock and hanging out with cats instead of doing what you're getting paid to do. It's a job like any other. You even have to contact the shelter and set up a meeting if you are interested in a cat. The store associates will do nothing more than tell you to fill out an application and drop it in whatever box.

    • @shane1421

      With most animals it is like that, if you are working with a cat or a rodent it is not a very good idea except dogs love it and they encourage people to play with them so they aren't sad.

    • @jessielxo12132
      @jessielxo12132 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      Actually as someone who worked in the pet care department for Petsmart for 4 years I can guarantee we have keys to that section in order to feed the animals/clean the cages. I worked at 3 different stores and this was always the case. We just didn’t handle the adoption stuff. That was all up to the rescue.

    • @SandyCheeks92837
      @SandyCheeks92837 5 ปีที่แล้ว +6

      I work at a pet store and it kills me seeing the cats in those cages up until they get adopted. And when employees approach them to play with them for a bit, you can see their excitement. The same with the mice. You really gotta be a bit tough to work at pet stores.

    • @Riandora99
      @Riandora99 5 ปีที่แล้ว +92

      Most "aggressive" snakes are acting out of fear and stress. A pet store is often a really stressful environment for a snake to be in which can cause them act more defensively. I've meet many snakes who were stressed and defensive at stores or even breeders but once placed in a home they usually calm right down. Also this is an animal at a petstore, it probably had very little socialization since it hatched. Snakes need to be handled and socialized so they are not as stressed and defensive when being moved, handled, and cared for.

  • @MoonyMaraudr
    @MoonyMaraudr 5 ปีที่แล้ว +324

    Here's what I've learned by working at a pet store for almost 2 years.
    -Overall: Please be very respectful to pet store employees. We are not vets or doggy dare care.
    -Tell someone when your animal makes a mess in the store! We are equipped with tools to clean the mess!
    -If your dog keeps peeing everywhere, leave him at home or take him outside first. Don't lead him near anything that he will want to mark (signs, cat trees, etc)
    -Listen to the employee's advice. We learn everyday at our job and we will be happy to answer any questions. However:
    -If your animal has a severe issue (bloody stool, constant upset stomach, etc) do not look for a home remedy until you take them to the vet!
    -Please fix your animals, especially cats! The amount of times we've seen kittens being brought in to be re-homed or nervous owners with surprise puppies is too many! Puppies are more expensive than getting the mommy or daddy fixed.
    -Impulse buying a pet that you have no prior knowledge of can lead to disaster. Do your research before buying any dog, cat, small mammal, reptile, bird, or fish! They each have specific needs that won't be immediately obvious.
    Please feel free to add more or ask questions.

    • @porterprieve5549
      @porterprieve5549 5 ปีที่แล้ว +7

      I disagree with following a petstore employee's advice. Places like PetSmart, PetCo, Pets at Home and most chain pet stores do not train their employees to be equipped with all the knowledge of the animals/animal products sold at their stores. When people go in talking about hamsters, they're told "they can live together, get this Crittertrail cage, buy cotton bedding" ALL of which are incorrect and dangerous. This isn't the employees fault however unless you truly understand what you're talking about, do not give out advice. As to people reading this, the chances that a petstore employee knows what they're talking about is slim, so please, before getting ANY type of pet (yes, even fish, hamsters etc) Do. Your. Research!

      Too Relatable!!! Some “Karen” customers just don’t care if you’re in a situation like this or if you’re busy folding clothes 24/7, straightening merchandise, putting stuff back where they came from (especially if they are online returns from the back room, from the fitting rooms, and/or maybe just in the wrong place). You’re in the zone doing your job and some customer comes up to you and wants you to help them find something very specific (with no specific things about the item: the brand, color, size, any details about the item). Then you are running around the store like a crazy person trying to help this customer without any helpful and discernable hints about this item. It becomes soooo frustrating because you have lost your train of thought and place with what you were doing last. I have always thought about not helping a customer because of how tired I was or I don’t know how to help them but their are eyes everywhere you look (your supervisor, other managers, other customers, other coworkers). They could easily report you to one of your managers or those anonymous surveys they urge to take after you buy something from their store.
      Anyone else have or had to deal with this type of stuff?

    Being some who loves animals and has grown up with many MANY different animals (birds, rats, mice, gerbils, dogs, cats, frogs, fish, spiders, a duck, etc.) I can say that you should get a pet from an animal shelter, if the animal looks in terrible shape, like fur missing or shut eyes, I recommend that animal. And if your looking for rodents, there are some places where the only have rodents you can get. If you do go to a pet store tho, go for pet supplies. Thanks

    Am I the only person who has had good experiences with dog breeders? I've own 2 miniature schnauzers and a bichon frise and they were all pure bred and registered with the AKC and various other pedigree organizations. They could easily trace back the lineage of these dogs over 200 years. The homes of the breeders were covered with ribbons and trophies. The kennels where the dogs slept where ALWAYS cleaned, the floors polished and they had a vet come and check all the dogs every month. And before you ask YES the dogs were VERY expensive but we got them a little cheaper because we didn't intend on breeding or showing them and they gave us a discount if we promised we neutered and spayed them. I don't mind paying a lot of money for a dog that I know is healthy, well bred and well taken care of.

    Rats are super smart. My school had several that they trained to do tricks, and afterwards we ended up with one. One of the coolest things he did was help us rewire part of the house after a squirrel got inside the wall and destroyed the wiring. We had just redone the stairwell and didn't want to smash it out. I tied yarn to our rat and put him in a hole at the bottom, and called him while waving treats at the top of the stairs. He zipped right through the wall. He had been trained to do mazes so this was a super easy for him. I hooked the wire to the yarn and pulled it through. We got both wires threaded this way without ruining the whole wall. My grandpa had to take a walk around the house, muttering that he'd seen a man walk on the moon, but this was the strangest thing he'd ever seen.

And the thing about it is once you get bit you get that reflex like "oh no! get your hand away!" but then in the back of my head it's like "WAIT!" And i'm glad that i listened to that voice in the back of my head saying to wait because i remembered.
    If you jerk your hand back while the snake is biting you, those teeth will drag and make the wound even worse.
    Lucky for me the kingsnake was like "oh wait, this is a finger, not food" they let go within a minute.
    And what she said was true, it doesn't really hurt that much, it's like pin pricks

    Gonna start by saying sorry for the long post, but I worked in pet stores for so long that I saw and experienced a lot. After 6.5 years of pet stores, I can honestly say it was one of my favorite jobs. I love animals and learning about them. I have been covered in every bodily fluid imaginable, bit more times than I can count by more different types animals than I can name, and still looked forward to going in to see the ones that I had grown attached to. We had a red tail boa that would curl up in my hair every shift I worked. I would always go to his cage when I got there and he would immediately pop up and try to get out to me. I had a few hamsters and rats that were like that. I had a super aggressive rat that attacked everyone that I actually took home and she became the sweetest thing ever. I had another rat that was trained to the point that he could open his own cage and come right to me. I think the worst things I dealt with were the snake that the “importer” brought in that was illegally acquired in South Georgia and was so aggressive that it attacked everyone, including me. I called that guy so fast and gave him hell. I was so angry at how he got the snake and I threaten to call the cops. Needless to say, we quit doing business with him. I also had the job of clipping parakeets’ wings. I never used the gloves cause I couldn’t hold them safely. They loved to pick at my cuticles. I would come out of the room almost every time with my hands bleeding. Needless to say, I am not, nor have I ever been, a bird person. My time at the pet stores taught me about animal nutrition, proper handling techniques for my safety and the animals’ safety, how to care for exotics and fish, and also how to better understand their body language. I also learned what parvo smells like (rusted metal) and what an ear infection smells like. (Grape jelly if you want to know)
